: What do you guys think of the GT-500???
sy1616 03-07-2009, 05:23 PM I'm looking to spend $30-40k on a fun weekend car. Must have power, must be 06 or newer, manual tranny or smg prefered, no verts, must be something you don't see everyday (rare). I've looked at everything and have narrowed it down to an 07-08 GT-500 (can be had for $36-40k with <3k miles), BMW M3 (96 competition model), Saleen Extreme (550hp), SRT-10 Ram (although not crazy about them) and that's about it. The GT-500 has the lead now. Test drove an 07 with 2700 miles and it was nice, not a bmw in terms of interior or build quality but nice for a mustang (my ref is an 04 Saleen). It was fast, handled well, good brakes, etc. but the dealer wasn't willing to go down on the $40k price. I can find an 09 on Ebay for 42K so that's no brainer plus in adds 2 yrs warranty, sirius, nav. Plus an '08 can be had for $36k. Anyhow, any of you guy have or had one? Like them?
WBSRT 03-07-2009, 05:28 PM I like the GT-500, but i would go M3. I came across this one, not sure if its still for sale but i love these. The 07 to 08's are sweet.

BOYCHIKS 03-07-2009, 05:42 PM If your looking for a fun weekend car, I'd narrow it down right away for either the gt500 or the Saleen extreme.** I think the Shelby will hold its value a lot better than the extreme, but the extreme will be more fun of a car... I haven't driven the new saleen, but from hearing they do drive pretty good. I drove a new gt500 when they first came out and were selling for 10k plus window sticker, and I loved the power it had, but I would rather have the extreme. :p
echo412 03-07-2009, 06:02 PM I would go with 03/04 cobra .. They go for about ~20k nowadays ... then spend about 10k on HP twin turbo kit ... then what have is a ~700whp low 10 second street warrior on pump gas and be done.
Harrison@Stage6 03-07-2009, 06:19 PM ^^^^------ damn bro. Where have you been lately? I haven't seen you around in ages. You still have your GCSRT8?
navyavi469 03-07-2009, 06:48 PM I lined up next to an 08 GT-500 last time we raced in Georgia. Absolutely annhailated him, they are slow as ballz. Mid 13s with averge drivers.
Spend $40K on a 2006 C6 Z06, and own a purpose-built sports car that can hang on the track with almost anything. The Z06 takes a hard gnarly dump on the shelby, with extra peanut chunks and last night's guacamole.
tomsws6 03-07-2009, 08:06 PM x2 on the z06. gt500 is a great car but heavy and difficult to launch. if launched good they are good for mid to high 12's.
btw. mid to high 11 and 30mpg on hyway with the Z!!!!!!!!!!!

I know that you don't have it listed but I would look into a 06 E55 AMG Mercedes. They can be had with under 20k miles for high 30's and when new they cost 100k. Great build quality and they are FAST!!!!;)

+1..............
mandan007 03-07-2009, 10:00 PM I chose the Jeep over the vette, gt500, saleen, or roush stage 3. My final decision was too many people already own vettes, and mustangs. But if adding another, I would go with vette.
slowgo 03-07-2009, 10:27 PM if it was me i buy a 03 04 cobra and sick money into it. or if i liked the new body style i would buy a gt and sink the money into that .no shelby its just a over priced mustang with shelbys name on it with a 5.4 sc big deal but its your money do with what you like

too dated. I had an 04 Saleen sc282sc and it sucked.

that would breat but show me an 06+ Z06 for under $40k...seeing $45ish but it's a fun car, my wife hates me for spending over $30k. I would love a Z06 however

it is heavy, has a solid rear..BUT it has 4 seats which is nice for our family

yeah, I hear you but I've got a fast luxury sedan already (although not nearly as fast) so I don't want the E55....cool car however
sy1616 03-08-2009, 04:10 AM how about an '02-'04 Z06. Those are nice too!!

CarAudioMechanik 03-08-2009, 07:47 AM I seen one of these in Manchester, TN yesterday after riding my motorcycle to Monte Eagle, TN. Nice looking car!

jacobsstr8 03-08-2009, 08:34 AM i would go with the 02-04 zo6. thats my favorite body style and they are 405 instead of the 385 like in the 01 zo6. ive seen them in the low to mid twenties with under 20k miles.
2BADGN 03-08-2009, 09:11 AM how about an '02-'04 Z06. Those are nice too!!
I know where you can get a 2002 Z06 one owner with 7000 original miles for 28k.;)
Hardtopvette 03-08-2009, 10:01 AM I am also a vette guy I just came from an 05 C6 Z51 6spd such a fun car. Somewhat quick even though it was just the normal LS2 I ran a 12.6 @ 114.5. Before that I had an electron blue 03 Z06 which was fun.
From what you said you want to pay that pretty much still eliminates any C6 Z06 so I would get yourself an 08 C6 vette LS3 and preferably with the Z51 package (so you get the better 6spd tranny, suspension, brakes etc etc). My buddy has an 08 LS3 6spd Z51 vette with the NPP bi-mode exhaust. Only mods are long tube headers ran a friggin 11.8 @ 122.5mph!!!! almost 100% stock C6 vette. No Mustang will touch that unless it has some serious mods. I have seen 08 vettes now mid to high 30's depending on options.
Thats where my vote goes 08 C6 vette!!!
echo412 03-08-2009, 10:04 AM ^^^^------ damn bro. Where have you been lately? I haven't seen you around in ages. You still have your GCSRT8?
Hey bud .. Yeah I still have the beast. I moved to Saint Louis last july and got stuck here. I still visit this forum often but don't post much ... What's going on in j-ville?

.
A stock gt500 should run mid-high 12's stock unless the driver sucks balls. With bolt-ons, the cars will easily trap mid 120's.
Of course stock for stock, the Z06 is quicker...it's 7-800lbs lighter with same power rating.
There's a comp orange TT GT500 with 4600 miles for sale in Houston 36,500.
Saleens are overpriced, underpowered, riced-out Mustangs imo.
What about a used CTS-V?
jayzstang 03-08-2009, 11:59 AM My vote would be to go with a 3.4 Whipple, Kenne Bell, or TT GT500 so that i could drop the kids off at school then go to the track later and run mid to low 9's in a "mustang".

No V, they are garbage...no domestic luxury cars for me (+ I had an '05 V total trash). I looked at an '09 V and was blown away by the many cheap, thin, toy-like items on that car. BMW for fast luxury here.

normal vette is too normal, I want something special, rare and a car that draws people to talk.

just taking the GT500 out yesterday for a test drive for 10 miutes, it drew 5 sets of people...awesome. My Saleen and Syclones did that too...fun to talk with other gearheads. I love to see guys point and tell their wifes look, look, look
SRT8 4 J 03-08-2009, 12:38 PM slap a vortech and new transfer case on the Jeep and save yourself and ton of $$$$ IMO

No, I like variety...just ask my ex wife :)...oh snap! Just kidding!!!
YogiSRT8 03-08-2009, 01:17 PM If you really want a rare fun nice car get an 03-05 M3 or even better yet get an M-Coupe, i love those things and they are rare.
Donnie91 03-08-2009, 03:43 PM m3 or m5 deffinatly..those cars are amazing and pretty damn fast!

CentralTexHemi 03-09-2009, 08:13 AM I saw a new Cobra GT-500 KR at a car show on Saturday it was uber awesome
trailblazer ssss 03-09-2009, 08:24 AM If it was me i would get a 07 gt-500 put the evolution performance stage 3 kit on it.or put a kennebell mammoth kit on it for 5999 and have a 600-700 rwhp car and still have good driveablity just my two cents.

i disagree... yes i have also seen a GT500 run 13's but look at the width of the rear tire (285's)... ford screwed up and put something much smaller then the corvette or viper has (viper has 345's)... if you put slicks or even wider D/R's youll run great times... and if you get a Kenne bell mammoth blower... youll even run better :)
i dont know what engineer at ford had that idea... but in my opinion not only did he screw up the 1/4mile on that car but he also make it look horrible, handle ****ty and not get the respect it should....
a 285 is 21% smaller then a 345... thats a lot less meat under the ass...

Yes, I fully agree great car, beautiful and fast but sedan looking...nothing wrong with that but it isn't exactly a sports car.
That said, I would look into getting a '06 Z06, they're in the low 40's range.

Congrats!!! you will like it. I had an 06 M3 Jet Black 6 speed and it was every bit as fast as the Jeep.
Did you get the Mystic Blue? If so that is a sweet color.;)
BOYCHIKS 03-10-2009, 09:39 PM Congrats! Sounds like it is good looking! Hurry and get those pics postedddd
rumplemenz 03-10-2009, 09:47 PM is that your ONLY options?
sorry but how the heck isnt the c6 z06 in there?
spend 40k and get yourself a 06 c6 z06 without a doubt....
if you have 40 to spend its not even a debate... you can find them out there for even less.... that is a serious car bro for the money... and from what you said it falls perfectly into that weekend car you are looking for
rumplemenz 03-10-2009, 09:51 PM oh i spoke to soon.. best of luck on the bimmer... love the m3's.. that would have been my 2nd choice... :)
probably best b/c im sure you save alot of money and stayed under your 30-40k budget... you could have easily got a z06 but than again would have paid alot more than the m3
congrats and best of luck with it... awesome cars..!! HATE their exhaust note but that can be changed with a lil mod work.. :)
GOOD LUCK
diverdan 03-11-2009, 04:29 PM Any well maintained Z06 from 02 on. I still miss mine.
If I could sell the 911 for what it's worth, I'd have an 08/09 Z06 right now (damn economy).
