: Looking to purchase a used SRT8, what are my warranty options?
Strick 03-03-2009, 07:27 PM Well short and to the point... I'm looking at used SRT8's I've drilled down to a few that I'm interested in, but I really want something that has a decent warranty left on it... I know the factory warranty is 3/36, but what can I do to extend this? I really prefer a certified pre-owend Jeep, but they are far and few between. So here is where I pose my question:
If I were to purchase an 06 with 30k on the clock, from a non Chrysler/Jeep dealer is there a way I can extend the factory through Chrysler? OR have the car pre-owned certified after buying it and obtain the warranty that way?
I hesitate to use the CRAP 3rd party warranty companies out there as they tend to bend you over backwards when you go to have your car serviced. Let's just say I've had bad experiences in the past...
Educate me :)

Yes, you can buy an extended warranty from Chrysler... If you plan on modding the jeep its not worth it tho.. Even the small things like headers will void it.. Some have been lucky with mod friendly dealers... I have yet to find 1:(.... Anyways heres the website http://www.chryslerwarrantys.com/
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 07:33 PM Goodluck with the purchase... Now is the perfect time to get one, with this F'd up economy..
Strick 03-03-2009, 07:52 PM Awesome information, just what I was looking for... What type of warrenty would you guys recommend? What are typical problem areas for these things? I've had 3 Jeeps in my family in the past and have never really run into any problems with any of them. But being this is a performance vehicle I would assume the basic powertrain care plus warranty would be sufficent?
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 08:13 PM Yes sir, The transfer case and rear end is JUNK! Once again some have had no prob's and others have had nothing BUT problems out of the transfer case's.. Its all up to how the vehicle was maintained... Lets make this easier, Do you plan on modding the jeep??
Strick 03-03-2009, 08:22 PM No, the jeep will stay stock for the most part. The only thing I might consider down the road is a CAI, and catback... This will be my daily driver so no need to go crazy with it.

Ok, You would be fine then.. If you can, Try to get all the service records for the car.. I have an 06 with the mods listed below and haven't had any probs (knock on wood)... I personally beat the hell out of mine. But, I also dont drive it in the winter so it sits about 6-7 months out of the year.. I change my oil every 1500 miles, T-case about every 10k (chrysler recommends every 30k, Most guys on here change it before then just cause of all the horror storys) Front and rear diff's every 10k.. It just needs to be maintained man.. It is a very expensive vehicle to maintain i will tell you that!
Strick 03-03-2009, 08:32 PM Why do you say its so expensive to maintain? Sneakers are a pretty obvious cost, how about brakes? Do you have to replace the rotors when you do pads? Or if need be, can they be cut?
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 08:43 PM No, You do not have to replace the rotors.. Alot of guys get the cross drilled/ slotted rotors because the factory ones sqeak like hell!! Sounds like a freight train stopping! Thats with normal driving.. It seems the only fix for that is the R1 rotors.. Well t-case fluid is $52.00 a quart. Oil is about 6-7 a quart, and the diff fluid is anywhere from 10-18$ a piece depending on what brand you go with..
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 08:44 PM You will hate the stock GY tires anyways.. They are garbage.
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 08:46 PM Lol, Im sorry im making it sound like a bad car.. Im just getting you prepared! Its worth every penny! Did you test drive one yet?
Strick 03-03-2009, 09:16 PM Yes, I've driven quite a few actually. The only problem I keep running into is using the tiptronic with the traction control off. The car seems to really hesitate when going from 1-2nd... One did it a lot worse than the other. Seems to only do it with the trac control off. (Not that I'd ever really turn it off, whats the point with AWD!!) It was actually like the car had died for 2-3 seconds. Very odd. Other than that it's a VERY solid car. Handles better than my Roush did! I CANT wait to get one...
I'm looking at an 06' thats in pristine condition with 28 and change on the clock. They're asking 29k for it, I can get it for around 27.. Seems to be the avg around my area. Another is an 07' with 33k, they're also asking 29k, and can probably get the truck for 27.5 or so... Seems there is a huge interest in my area (Philadelphia tri-state). Both trucks are loaded with every option and are pretty much flawless.
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 09:20 PM Yea the shifts feel a little sloppy with a stock tune.. If you do get one buy a Predator and get a custom tune made.. It really wakes the beast up! And if you gotta take it to the dealer just load your stock tune back in via the predator and your good to go..
Strick 03-03-2009, 09:27 PM I'm VERY hesitant to use a prediator on the truck... My brother used one on his 98' Cobra... End result a fried computer which put a 700$ hole into his pocket. I feel so bad for him.
What do you think of these prices im getting on trucks?
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 09:32 PM I have heard NO probs from the predator! Nothing but good reviews honestly... Its pretty much the only tuner out for the GC srt8 that you can play with.. Those prices seem a little high. But, like you said there maybe a high demand in your area.. If your willing to travel a little bit i bet you could get a better deal. There is one guy on the forum that just picked up an 08 with 25k for under 30k.. If you wanna stay local you might end up paying more like i did..
Jacure 03-03-2009, 10:33 PM Well short and to the point... well, i bought an 06 from a chrysler dealership, which is heavily modified with the extended warranty till 86k miles. i don't have to worry bout anything for a while, cause i only have 27k on the odo.
:D
Jpeyatt 03-03-2009, 10:35 PM Better make sure you get that in writing... Make sure they will warranty the truck with all the parts on it! They will tell you anything to make that sale man.

well, i have a copy of all the parts installed on the car. At least, i know it was sold to me like that "as is with warranty". if not, i can always take them to court for sellin me a jeep like that.
Strick 03-04-2009, 02:57 PM Ugh, every car I find and become interested in sells the day after I speak to someone about it!! This has happend 3x now! Patience is a virtue...
DevssrT 03-04-2009, 03:39 PM I bought mine in December of 2007...perowned with around 16k if I remember correctly...paid 32500 out the door includng tax!
For piece of mind, since I plan on keeping this truck for quite some time, I purchased a Chrysler maximum care warranty which extends the warranty to 8 years or 85k miles. With a 100 deductible. I forget what I paid for it since I got it at cost from my friends dad who owns a jeep dealership. ..def. Get the max care with the higher deductible. Paid for itslef in 1 trip!
780XO 03-04-2009, 04:36 PM I too got the max car but I thought is was 8/80K. Anyway my 08 I bought in Nov 08 with all the goodies except rear Siruis TV (DVD Player/screen only) and the kicker upgrade for 31.5K. The additional warranty was around 3k but I plan on keeping for quite awhile so it will be worth it. I went for the full bumper to bumper plan to cover the large amount of electronics installed. Now that I have had it I would hate to lose the remote start. Look around for an 08, you should be able to find one really close (or at least on the east coast) for the price of the 07. Nothing wrong with 07 but the 08's had some nice changes. GL
Strick 03-05-2009, 07:17 AM Thank you for the responses guys! I would love to find an 08' (~200 Miles of Philadelphia) for 28-30k. But again, there seems to be a huge demand and the dealers know this. Many are unwilling to budge on the price much. 4 of 6 that I was interested in sold within a day of me inquiring about them! DOH.
Anyway here are a few things I address to move the dealer on the price...
-Non certified pre-owend... I lose an 8yr/80k powertrain warranty. Compensate me so it makes sense to consider a non-cert vehicle.
-I can pick up a NEW 08' for 35k out the door. Many dealers are asking 32-35 for used 08's. Although I haven't really inquired about many 08's I'm willing to say most dealers will only move a few hundred maybe a grand off their asking price. This still does not make sense to me.
-Various flaws with the car & lack of options (if they exist).
-Some 06's I've been considering are now 3+ years from the in service date. Meaning I lose the factory 3/36 warranty.
Anything I'm missing? I'm in sales so I'm not a complete moron handing myself to the dealer on a silver platter. If they are unwilling to negotiate I walk. Tips welcome! ;)
