: Blacked out window trim
tonyl27 02-01-2007, 09:26 AM Black out trim tape from any local parts store.
Tools
- X-acto knife
- Heat gun or hair dryer
- Lots of patience
Clean trim with rubbing alcohol.
Use the black out tape on the chrome section. Takes a few tries to get it right. After you finish 1 side the other side will take you a lot less time. After you finish taping each section, heat the tape up as it aids the adheasion process. Really 1 roll is enough but I wasted a bit to practice gettin it just right. The best part, if you mess up just pull it off and do over again. It's a good alternative to painting the trim. The finish on the tape is almost identical to the rest of the trim on the windows.

omegaman 02-01-2007, 09:33 AM It looks good from a distance - do you have any close up pics? I wonder how that will hold up in the elements.
tonyl27 02-01-2007, 09:41 AM i'll snap some pics, so far so good. It's been on for a month+. A buddy of mine did this to his car more than a year ago still on strong. Trim tape is only a few bucks anyway.
tonyl27 02-01-2007, 09:53 AM It looks excellent!
hey thanks man.
honestly though..my first attempt, I did 1 section like 3 times, and just couldn't get it right. I said forget it at that point. After a bit I came back tried again, and got it right. So definatly if your gonna do this be patient.
btw, I added a close up pic.
Did you take the trim off the car to install?
omegaman 02-01-2007, 11:52 AM Wow. I'm quite surprised at the close up. Looks really good.
kramsay1234 02-01-2007, 11:55 AM I think my pants are wet now. That looks outstanding!
Please give brand, etc of the tape cause I am in.

El Jefe 02-01-2007, 01:52 PM looks awesome man! Now do the whole chrome door panel piece and when youre done sticking it on, cut out the Grand Cherokee letters haha

Now I do like the chrome stuff better but that is making me think of the baddest mofo of a car when I was a kid.
"That is an awesome Jeep Michael Knight"
You should get a scanning LED bar installed on the hood and plates that say KITT.
I gotta get my GCSRT8 soon...I have so many plans..
Oh and for those that have no clue what I'm talking about, Google the words
"Knight Rider"....
Im starting to feel old now....
HoustonSRT-8 02-01-2007, 03:08 PM Hmm.....I wonder how that would look on a silver GC.
OurZoo 02-01-2007, 03:50 PM Probably best to leave that to a black one IMO. That'll lool real nice if he blacks out everything!
OBSRT8 02-01-2007, 04:29 PM To show how good this stuff is here is a pic of my winter wheels on pickup that I applied the tape to the wheels 10 years ago.I only use these wheels in the winter with ice and snow and salt, sand and who knows. They still look as good now as they did 10 years ago.

I am sorry, where exactly is the tape applied in this image?
I am glad to hear that it lasts well in the elements. This is a great alternative to having a paint shop rape you with labor charges.
AlexT 02-01-2007, 06:13 PM You've done a GREAT job with that tape.

looks great, what type of window tint and % are you using for the two fronts it matches perfectly ?
tonyl27 02-01-2007, 08:47 PM looks great, what type of window tint and % are you using for the two fronts it matches perfectly ?
I think the company is lumar? 30% for the fronts, a tad bit lighter than the rear. When it's overcast out, the tint appears to be darker.
Thanks for all the comments, it's a great alternative to painting the trim. It's definatly worth a shot to try out.

The wheel has a hub cap that has 5 black stripes about 1 1/4 inches wide. Those are the same tape that is used in this thread.
It looks like the wheel has 5 openings around the face of the wheel.Exactly what I was trying create.
kramsay1234 02-01-2007, 09:45 PM I would have said those were openings

I bet that blackout window trim would look sporty on any of the four colors
Squilly D 02-02-2007, 04:27 PM I think this mod look great but what is black out tape? I have not seen it before in a auto parts store. What should I ask for at the counter and is there a particular brand I should get. Thanks.

It should be in the section with decal stickers etc.. The brand I think is called "trimbrite" it says on the packaging, black out trim tape. Any pep boys or autozone should carry this.
SkyeHighSRT8 11-07-2007, 06:40 PM that is awsome, I will be checking around for some this weekend. I wish all mods where that easy and cheap. No one ever answered if it is better to remove the trim while applying the tape. I would think you could do it while it is installed on the vehicle.

Do it while installed. I believe the belt mouldings sometimes bend when they are taken off and the back window moulding is actually part of the window and cant be removed, unless you take the whole window out.
tonyl27 11-07-2007, 07:55 PM wow...my thread resurfaces! trim tape is still holdin on strong!
ChrisWK 11-08-2007, 10:00 AM Hey is that a Laredo Grand Cherokee SRT,The tape looks cheap,Take it off the chrome looks better. Later
BOOST ALMIGHTY 11-08-2007, 10:22 AM I would think you could tape them off and paint them and probably look a lil' better.
BlackonBlacksrt8 11-08-2007, 11:03 AM Has anyone tried this on the chrome on the front and rear bumper? I was gonna take mine to a shop and get it painted but if I can save some money and do it this way I will.

AGray34 11-08-2007, 12:28 PM I would imagine they can all just be sprayed. Maybe Palella can chime in. I just had my rm360 sprayed by him in a black clearcoat, looks great.

From what I've read you cannot remove them, they are attached to the windows someohow...
Inferno SRT8 11-08-2007, 03:46 PM On black that looks excellent.
AGray34 11-08-2007, 04:46 PM Yea I've read that that 2 of the pieces are somehow attached to the window as well. What about taping off the car and spraying them??? or is that just not really practical?

I believe that's what Renn did....

it is. thats the only option for the rears for paint besides taking the window out.
scottina06 11-08-2007, 05:58 PM I will trade all of my black trim if someone can come to KY to do it. I will pay to have the rear windows removed and installed.
SkyeHighSRT8 11-10-2007, 09:23 PM If anyone is having trouble finding blackout tape, I just bought some. the part # from pepboys is T9005 black. Its made by trimbrite.

All of the chrome on the GC including the window trim can be taped off and sprayed. PALELLA painted all of mine SBM and it looks great.

Thanks buddy!
The chrome trim can all be painted. Be sure that everything is prepped properly though.
maf1960 11-11-2007, 06:14 AM very nice - economical too. If it peels or fades out in time, it is cheap to re-do!
droppedenali 01-07-2008, 02:20 PM Was this installed while on the vehicle or was the trim taken off?

Just did mine last week and it looks great! I did not have to remove my trim to do this. The width of the tape is perfect, for the most part. I just took it slow, cut a length at a time for each section, oversizing by about a 1/2"-1" and then just had to trim the ends ever so carefully. If you don't oversize each strip to much, you will have enough tape to fix one booboo.:( Not hard at all. Good luck!
droppedenali 01-08-2008, 02:35 PM Did this last night with a buddy and turned out really sharp. Ever window got better and better. You learn several little tricks each time you do a window. It makes me want to redo them all again...but whatever. It looks good enough as is.

I see your door moldings are also black, did you use black out tape for these or had them painted?

My door moldings are from the famous Pallela! My girlfriend got them for me a while ago and gave them to me for a christmas present. What a girlfriend! I kept modding little things in the performance category and she, being into the looks of things, initiated exterior mods for me. OH YEA! Here we go!
I did use the blackout tape for my front and rear chrome strips today. Looks alright. Gonna start a thread with some pics to show you guys in the visual mod section. Thanks for asking Mr. Freeze. Much respect to you.
fergcougar 02-18-2009, 07:30 PM Ive been on the blackout tape kick as well. I didnt do a good just the first time but tomorrow im redoing them. What do you think of spaying solvent on the trim then applying the tape. All the bubbles would be out and dry within a couple minutes. Just a thought..
BOYCHIKS 06-17-2009, 08:43 AM Man, you did a fabulous job..
