okay so i have some final issues i would like to get some advice on, you guys have all been really helpful so far, so here goes...

1.) Under gentle acceleration from a stop, in 1st gear the revs reach about 1800 rpm and then dip a little, then go back up. i think this may just be it shifting into 2nd, but the revs only dip to like 1600 before they go back up. is the change from 1st to 2nd gear really that subtle or is there a transfer case/transmission issue here?

2.) Lots of noise coming from the rear under moderate acceleration, especially at higher speeds. Sounds like a whining, whether its just normal differential noise or something is awry, i cant tell.

3.) How do I know if i'm having the transmission hesitation issue everyone is talking about...my transmission seems to shift fine when i'm getting on it, even in autostick mode, but when it comes to acceleration, maybe I'm just easy to please.

If anyone can enlighten me on any or all of these topics I would be eternally grateful. :D thanks

That would be the exhaust.

:D

Really, everything sounds normal to me.

Respectfully, I don't believe it's the exhaust. I believe it's the clutches in the transfer case that were part of TSB 21-005-06 which impacts vehicles with a pre-3/6/06 build date. I believe our vehicle makes this noise, but was not covered under the TSB due to the build date.

Here is the TSB: http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk_2100506.pdf

I thought it was the exhaust too, but when the noise was being made, the pitch of it would change when I would cycle the traction control on and then off. Check it out and see if the noise changes.

True to the TSB, I believe the noise is calming down with more mileage.

That was a joke. ;)

allow me to clarify a few things:
my car's build date was 12/06. what problems to the ones made around this time typically have? i have to say, the transmission doesnt seem to be off, but what really concerns me is the racket coming from the rear-end area (a barely audible, but certainly present metallic clunking) that shows up when starting and stopping, primarily in first gear if low speed is maintained (0-20 mph).
The whining/humming I mentioned, and later realized I dont know which part of the car its coming from, only shows up around 65-70 mph. It isn't too bothersome and doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but I'm curious as to what it is.
Also, I think I may be in the same boat as you in terms of the whole punching it from 20-30 mph thing and not getting immediate and optimal response. I will try it more tomorrow and see if there is indeed a difference.
thanks

I don't experience a metallic clunking, but I have recently noticed hearing a slight grinding "type" noise kind of like a saw from a distance. Starts around 30mph?

if it was the differential i would assume the noise would be constant, if it comes and goes like mine does sometimes, maybe some element of the transfer case? while we're on the topic of noises, does anyone else hear a rumbling, almost grinding sound when braking? guy at the dealership says its just the brakes grabbing, but i dont put much stock in what they have to say about it...at this point i know more about the srt than they do, and i dont know a whole helluva lot

That TSB says the sound is heard around 30-50mph. I'm hearing that whining/growling/rumbling at freeway acceleration speeds 60-80mph. :(

Could the whining just be the tires? Does it change based on the type of surface you're traveling on?

No, it changes based on pedal pressure. I'm not sure if it's just a normal driveline issue since this is my first AWD/4x4 vehicle, though.

BTW, It goes away around 100.....http://www.theplaceholder.com/forums/images/smilies/lookaround[1].gif

I'll have to check out the ESP/different surfaces/100mph tests.

that description sounds a lot like what happens in mine, except its only around 65 mph. i think maybe the exhaust or something is vibrating and rubbing against something, it doesnt sound like anything is about to fall apart, at least in my case

no but seriously, just drive it and dont worry about every little noise you hear.
you're working yourself up into a lather. keep an eye on your gauges, don't get too far away from a gas station, & have some fun.

this vehicle is an absolute blast, nothing has happened yet that has overshadowed how undeniably enjoyable it is. i think i'm a just a hypochondriac for my car lol
