: Idle revs
JDR07 01-30-2007, 01:22 PM Sorry to post so many of these questions, but my truck is relatively new so i want to figure out what are problems and what arent. i left my car running for a minute while i ran in my house, and when i came out the car was idling at a high rpm and making a lot of noise, then gradually went back down to normal. any ideas as to what could make the idle speed go up like that without me touching the gas? anyone else experienced this?
If it matters, today was the first day i actually got on it and did a few WOT runs, as well as experimentation with the autostick. could this be the cause of the idle abnormality? thanks
MrHemi 01-30-2007, 01:45 PM Are you sure it wasn't just the electric fan kicking in? It is a little on the loud side while stopped and at idle.
JDR07 01-30-2007, 01:54 PM that very well may be what it was, there was definitely a fan type of sound happening, i just assumed everything was kicking up a notch. so does the electric fan come on every time it idles, because this is the first time ive noticed it
thanks

It sounds like you are getting used to your new vehicle. My suggestion is that you put a few miles on it (like 1,500 to 2,000) before you consider that anything is not right. I had a few wierd things happen when ours was new, but it settled down after a bit.
If you do this, you will be a lot less concerned, and enjoy your ride more.
JDR07 01-30-2007, 02:40 PM thanks everyone, i really appreciate all the input. boy am i glad i found this site!!
phenwick 01-30-2007, 05:52 PM Did you have the defrosters on, and you heard the a/c compressor cycling on and off? Just a thought.
JDR07 01-30-2007, 07:44 PM no defrosters, possibly a/c, dont remember. it would make sense that the fan came on, since i had driven it quite a bit around town before this happened. in retrospect, very fan-like, dont remember hearing more exhaust

My jeep constantly idles at about 1100 rpm if it's in park. Once I shift into drive it drops to 500 - 700 rpm. Although recently it's been jumping around abit.
JDR07 01-30-2007, 09:15 PM When the electric fan comes on while the car is idling, how long does it go fast before it calms back down? I was only away from it for maybe 2 minutes and right when i got back in it started sounding normal
kramsay1234 01-30-2007, 11:00 PM JD - sounds certain that it is the electric fan. When I got my truck I posted on here that it is the loudest fan I have ever heard on a truck - but then again, this is the biggest motor. :D
Fear not, when this kicks on, its just keeping your baby safe.

Redshift 01-31-2007, 09:42 AM The fan will cycle on and off depending on coolant temperature and when the A/C compressor is running.
