Hello everyone!

I work for a Jeep dealership, and my District Chrysler rep has authorized me to replace a customers squealing rear brakes with new cross drilled/slotted rotors to help take care of the problem. ]
My question is wich rotors have had the best results with taking care of the loud squealing that the SRT8's are experiencing? Im looking at Stillen and R1.

Any feedback is greatly apreciated!

in all honesty, this is a question with many answers, but one without resolution for all. some of us (myself included) will say the R1concept drilled and slotted rotors and others may suggest rotex or discitalia. overall i think you'll find that the R1's with the right pad combo will yeild the best results....tho there is still that slight chance of getting a squeal out of them in the cold. I am running the GS6 pads on mine...i think there are a few or couple members running the stock pads with the R1's (Vinny?)

I think we are going to got with the R1 rotors. Glad I found this site to do some research on!!

BTW I cant believe some of the things I've read on here about other dealer experiences. I guess good old customer service is hard to come by these days.

The way we look at it is the way the economy is right now, customer retention is the most important thing in a business. Especialy the auto industry.

Sorry to tell you guys its not going to help. The squeel has nothing to do with rotors or pads its the shims. I have tried every brake pad and 2 other brands of rotors and still get the squeel, yes it goes away at first but comes back with a vengance. I'd hate to see you go thru all that cost and have an even more pissed customer come back in.

Order some Shims from SBS (Scandanavia Brake Systems) and that should help

We have removed the shims on the last 2 sets per the TSB that was released. It still squeeks.

it's too bad EVERYBODY doesn't think this way...in a time of need you'd expect better service, but in fact it seems just the opposite.

Some helpful hints with squealing brakes for those who have trouble:

When installing the rotors, grease from hands and other fluids get on the rotors and are VERY hard to get off. If installing without gloves use a liberal amount of brake clean and WIPE the rotors down throughly afterwords.

Use a good street pad for street driving. Some people complain about squeal from pads and they're using mild race pads....well no ****.

Wear the pads in until you can smell it. This helps the bond between the pads and the rotors and will not only help initial bite but consistent braking over long periods.

Cold pads will always squeal a little. Once warm it goes away, this is totally normal.

That being said I've installed Centric PosiQuiet Pads on my vehicles along with R1's and have been more then happy with the low dust, no noise, high quality pad at a great price. You can also order them through R1 with your rotors. Also, I haven't seen it much with R1's but I'd only get slotted rotors and if you must go with drilled, get the Premium R1 Rotors and not the E-line as inexpensive drilled rotors put under stress have been known to crack. Like I said I haven't seen it with R1 but it's just something to keep in mind.

Put all of the above together and if it still squeals it has to be your shims....

Hope this helps.

Good advice.. I don't do brake jobs anymore, I always degreased the rotors.

When I was a young kid, my dad taught me before installing a clutch, to always clean the flywheel and pressure plate with lacquer thinner to get all the grease and oil off -- otherwise the damn thing will chatter like his old '40 Ford.

He also did the same with drums and rotors while doing a brake job...

And as a precaution, he would also chamfer the leading edges of the shoes and pads...

I read here in a post, someone claimed they chamfered the edges of the pads and it eliminated the squeal... I don't think it was confirmed, I'm not sure this actually helps.

Just an addition question around the brake issues. How many miles has everyone gotten out of there brakes??? I have just shy of 14K right now, the brakes look pretty worn.

You're going to get all types of answers to this question. Brake life depends on too many variables (including weather) to really get a straight answer.

Brembo calipers are really high quality and use dust boots so I really wouldn't worry about rebuilds on the calipers. Stock rotors in general are usually pretty soft, I don't know about SRT8's however, go to R1 for upgraded higher quality rotors and pads and just have a shop install if you don't feel qualified and that way you don't get screwed on pricing....just the labor :p

Drilled cast iron rotors crack and fail when they are heat cycled... the holes also reduce disc area, and consequently friction output.

Most SRT8 owners will probably never have a problem with them, but if you want to avoid problems for sure, go with slotted ones.

The slots (and holes too, if you have enough of them, but slits work better) help keep the pads true, and the wear of the disc even... in turn this will help keep a noise problem from developing after the chamfer of the pad wears down over time.

*However* you're not going to affect the noise problem just by changing rotors. Pad material, shims, and dampening material (grease, rubber, etc) are the key to this problem.

I drive mostly city conditions with a 4 mile commute with about 5 lights. I would say 80% of my mileage is this type of driving. I heard the squeal springs around 19K.

Biggest benefit was about a weeks worth of OEM brake dust every 2 months with the Satisfied Pro-Ceramic pads I used on new R1 drilled/slotted rotors. Stopping power is at least 85% of the OEM pads with a lot less rotor wear and a lot better rotor look.

Only on wet/cold mornings do I squeal for the first stop or two.

who the heck knows... i went bananas trying to find out the right answer to this... one day i said the heck with it and ordered some pads on tirerack and paid 130 bucks for all 4 to my door... threw them in and didnt touch rotors..... 3 months later no noise.. dust is NON existent and made me realize how much dust the OEM pads generated...

my brakes before this drove me nuts... always load... now they dont have that OEM BITE ofcourse but for the street they are fine... for the track they wouldnt be sufficient though
