: Overhead console - How do I change the map lights?
Mango 01-20-2007, 05:10 PM I have searched high and low and cannot find a detailed writeup, or even hints/tips, for how to change the map light bulbs in the overhead console. I've swapped out all the interior lights with LED's and these are the last two I have to change. I've managed to take the clear cover off, however I don't see a way to get the bulb out!
Anyone have any tips or tricks? It almost looks like I have to remove the entire overhead console but that's the last thing I want to do. I don't even know how it comes out.
OurZoo 01-20-2007, 07:30 PM I don't have the answer for ya, but I would like to know which bulbs you went with, where you got 'em, and pics.
Mango 01-20-2007, 07:41 PM I am using the "4 Star SMT" LED lights for under the dash.
I am using the SMT Tower lights, first on that page, for the rear passenger overhead lights (behind the handles) and I got them for the overhead console.
I am using Superstar Bulb for the rear passenger compartment (the one in the flip up door).
They are 194 bulbs that are fully compatible.

I will get pics in a bit. They instantly improved the feel of the interior!! Best "mod" I've done. Now if only I could figure out how to take apart that overhead console! haha
Oh, I also replaced the license plate lights! The truck has the look of a Lexus or Audi now. FAAANTASTIC!
idealrides 01-20-2007, 09:22 PM on the maplights if you've already removed the clear lenses then you're almost there.... now you just have to pull out the aluminum plate by grabbing it with your fingers and pulling straight down to the floor. but remember its position because theres only one way the plate's guides snap perfectly back into place.
BTW - the plate just directs light downwards so it doesn't hit your eyes, if you want more light you don't actually have to put the plate back.

THANK YOU! For a minute I was trying to figure out how to take the entire console off the roof, then it hit me that there MUST be an easier way.
MNBob 03-24-2007, 06:44 PM Are you guys sure the map lights are 194's? I took mine apart today and they were these long (1"?) cylinders with contacts on both ends.
What bulb is this?
Mango 03-24-2007, 08:59 PM It's a Festoon bulb. I am using LED Festoon bulbs from http://autolumination.com/festoon.htm
It's a great upgrade!!! I believe you need a 214 replacement bulb....
The 194 bulbs replace the REAR overhead bulbs, and the under dash bulbs. The MAPLIGHTS are the above linked Festoon bulbs.
just check Sylvania's guide. It'll tell you.
MNBob 03-25-2007, 10:04 AM Thanks, Mango. I was confused by the lamp replacement guide Automotive Lighting Lamp Replacement Guide (http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProducts/AutomotiveLighting/LampReplacementGuide/default.htm) which calls for a 194.
Which festoon did you get? Does it give as much light?
jeapers 03-30-2007, 11:33 AM Just FYI, our dome bulbs are 39mm or 1 1/2" in length if you are thinking of ordering some from this site.
Razorecko 03-30-2007, 12:34 PM I changed all my lights in the interior to leds & when they're not even turned on they stay very dimly lit alll the time - whats up with that ?
MNBob 03-30-2007, 08:35 PM I had one that just stayed on bright, even when the interior lights went off. I don't know if this was a polarity issue or what. But I just fiddled with it and tried another bulb and it quit doing that. Now they work great.

Inferno, I just did this too and "your right" the manual is useless. This thread might not be the correct one to enter this info in but here are the lamps in detail...
- (2) Map lights: Factory is a "ring loop" 212-2 I believe. It is a 44mm however, I replaced with a 1-1/2" festoon without the ring loop. It is a little shorter but works fine. You can just use Autoillumination's 44mm Ring loop, should work. I went with a 9-LED as the diamter of the bulb is the same. You can use a "super" LED however it has a square block and may be to large to fit. TIP: If you want more light, leave the "bottom" reflector out. Someone here made that suggestion and I agree... MUCH more light.
(NOTE: On the Map festoons, there are "many" choices. It is your call)
- (2) Visor: Autoillumination only makes one lamp for this. It looks "exactly" like a fuse (31mm x 5mm) and only Chrysler makes it. It is halfway down on the "festoon" page.
- (2) Rear grab handles: Factory #194. Change out with whichever LED you like but it sould illuminate "around" the lamp not just out the tip. (These seem to be the lamps that stay illuminated all the time. (They do go out after about 5-10 minutes after you close/lock the car up though. I am still messing with this but I think jusr switching the polarity may work. Just haven't done it yet.
- (1) Glove box: Factory #194. Same as Grab handles
- (2) Foot well: Factory # 906: Autoillumination #921: TIP: You can make these "MUCH" brighter by leaving off the round lens-cover. The LED should only be out the "tip" on this lamp
- (1) Rear Hatch: Same as footwell
- (2) License Plate: Factory #194. I know this isn't interior but "what an improvement!". Again. like someone posted earlier.

NICE! Much appreciated!
D-man 05-21-2007, 07:26 PM Mango, I wrote this up before I knew you had another thread going and were posting pics and doing the same. Sorry for the double up.
Mango 05-21-2007, 07:31 PM Hey don't be sorry! This is awesome. Thanks for the posts!! :)
Yours is much more detailed than mine, I had forgotten all the model #'s when I bought my bulbs.
Muellge 10-27-2007, 12:27 PM It was helpful to my order. What a difference this makes in the Jeep! Install is a little tricky on getting a few of the lenses off, but once you get started, it works nicely.
johnny--2k 10-28-2007, 11:52 PM awesome. A cheap mod that's worthwhile!
