It happens right after the engine turns off. Sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine. Hard to explain the sound. Help

I do not know about the grinding, but crackling sounds like your exhaust cooling down, especially if your drove through water just before shutting her down.
How about a liitle more discription, or even a sound file. There is a lot of experience available on this forum, someone will figure it out.

well i have some better news. after more inspection, it doesnt seem like its coming from the engine. It now sounds to me like it is coming from the passenger side, underneath the car... as per your request, i have a video clip of the noise (if that makes any sense)...any ideas on how i should post it?

I would sincerely appreciate if you guys could listen to it and let me know what you think.

Thanks.

.

That is one strange noise, I have no idea what it is. Hopefully the Forum members will come up with an answer soon.

Once in a while my SRT makes that same noise. It was mentioned elsewhere, maybe on this website or another. I think it was supposedly caused by the transfer case actuator, and isn't a cause for concern. Eventually we'll probably see a fix for it, maybe a TSB.

I have the EXACT same noise coming from my truck. I have no idea what it was, and it only happens occasionally. My co-worker noticed it one day as well. Hopefully someone knows what it could be.

Mine does the same thing. Weird...

Mine happens only occasionally too. i think ive noticed the pattern though. When I drive it for a bit, then turn it off, it doesnt make the noise. When i simply turn it on (rev it a little bit for the ladies) then turn it right back off, it makes the noise.

Stopped by the dealership today, they said it doesnt sound threatening and that driving with it should be no problem. I have yet to make an actual appointment so they can fully dive into whats causing it.

It's a blow off valve sound that comes from the 600 HP super duper special turbo edition.,,, what, you're car has no turbo?? I would complain to your dealer! ;)  :p :D

It is the exhaust and other components getting shorter as they get colder after you turn the truck off. Some time when your turck is dead cold note how far the exhuast tips stick out, then run the heck out of it and look again.

I purchased my srt8 on Sunday. As I was test driving it they told me that they had detected a faulty actuator and would need to replace it.
To cut a long story really short, I have been without the car all week, they are now saying that this issue is cropping up a lot and the fix is on hold until the Star Team of Tech guys agree on the best way to approach it.
They are meeting today and monday in Detroit.
They had had a whole new transfer case shipped out from Michigan and were ready to replace it until the work was put on hold.
Aaaaaaargh!!
Beware all who hear this crackling noise and contact your dealer immediately, it is apparantly a potential safety issue.

Hope to get my Black Beauty back on Tuesday??

My SRT8 has only done it (that I've heard) about 3 or 4 times. What type of actuator is it? Why would it be a safety concern?

TRAINER

Mine does it every single time I turn off the engine. Now I'm getting a little concerned. Yes, how exactly is this a safety issue?

I have to admit that I have never heard the noise after driving for a while. It only seems to happen when the engine is cold or only runs for a couple of minutes. I considered having someone start and stop the vehicle for me so I could listen from outside the truck, just haven't had time. I hope this is nothing serious.

Guys, I dont think its a safety issue. If it were, we would be notified immediately. I think its more of a "cosmetic" thing at this time.

I'm starting to faintly hear it when starting the vehicle also. Anyone else? Start the truck in a garage or sheltered area with the door open and listen for it.

Mine does it too, But its an actuator, transmission whatever it is when you kill power it spring returns to its original position, sometimes it makes noise sometime it doesnt, I woulnt call it a safety concern though. See page 6 from the link below.

OK,
after a week of messing around checking with all the Big Wigs in Michigan they have now all decided that this is a NORMAL sound.
I think they are all still trying to get their heads around the European Diesel parts of the tranny?
But we can all breath a big sigh of relief... and I have my beast back!

I have turned my car off with the radio off and door open several times and have never heard it. It might not be a safety issue, but something is wrong if some of us hear it and others don't. That is assuming that not hearing the noise is the way it should be.

Has anyone had this noise fixed yet I hear the noise in mine after driving for a long time now before I only heard it just pulling in and out of my garage after washing it

2MCHPSI
03-16-2007, 06:22 PM
It has already been stated by the SRT Engineers in one of the chat sessions I beleive that it is the sound of one of the actuators or something in the transfer case "resetting" to its dormant position.

I get this sound everyday/everytime I start the car and shut it off after a short period of time. If it is happening to you after ong drives, I would get it checked out by tyhe dealership under warranty.

mike123
03-16-2007, 06:32 PM
I just took it out of storage to bring it to the stereo shop after sitting for 4 months it was the first time driving it drove home about 30 miles and I heard it when I pulled in my garage I heard it before but only pulling in and out of my garage after a wash so I will give it a few more runs if it continues it's off to the dealer I guess

Mine doesn't crackle, but occasionally it sounds like you are taking your fingers and flicking a metal canister. It will do it every 7 seconds for about 20 minutes or so.

i think the noise everyone is hearing is the throttle blade resetting to full closed position.

The Jeep is full of sounds.

Throttle plate closing fully after full shut off.
Actuator on the Transfer case ( loudest noise )
Hot oil dripping into the pan
Exhaust expansion and contraction.

All sounds i hear every day and all normal. Now i just have to figure out where the voices are coming from:confused:

Nobody has said anything about the whining noise. When I shut my jeep down I get a whining or whirring noise like a small motor shutting down.I just take it for granted that it is the fuel pump shutting off.I get a similiar sound from my GMC when I shut it off.Any one else hearing this?

I too get a whirring, ehhh, whirrr sound when I shut her off. I did remember one of the SRT engineers saying that "something" was recalibrating itself....

Hope there's no issue with this jeep down the road b/c something was overlooked.

Thats what this thread covers. Is it this noise?

This is the transfer case actuator. Common and normal and said to happen more commonly if you just start the truck, let it idle for a bit and shut it off.

Mine does the same thing too,It only happens if the truck has been running and didnt move, when you shut it down you will hear it every time. Now if I take it for a drive, I dont hear the sound when I shut it off,Thats what I noticed with mine anyway.

Mine made that noise every single time I shut it off. I just had my entire transfer case replaced and it doesn't make the noise anymore. I had 2 days until my warranty expired and my "service 4WD system" light came on. If your Jeep is making this noise get it checked ASAP!
