: Buying an Jeep SRT8 !!!
FordMotorHEAD 01-10-2009, 12:12 AM I'm looking at buying a Jeep SRT8 for a DD and wanted to know what the good and bad about this SUV is. Please post your pro's and con's ( if you have any ) I haven't heard of anyting negative from a few friends I have who own them and I would like to know more. It will be modded but just a few bolt-on's ( H/C ported Intake Manifold and full exhaust )

Lol.... Thats kinda mean!;) but, very true:D
dbrisson 01-10-2009, 08:23 AM Where to start. Mine is a DD sometimes. They are quick, the launch is very nice, and reliability sucks. Dealers are a pain with this vehicle, resale is in the tank.
The brakes will squeal, a rotor / pad replacement to aftermarket is almost a necessity rather than multiple trips to the dealer.
Some tend to leak at the trans sensors although mostly 06-07s. Good year run flats seem to separate in a destructive fashion near 15k miles. With traction control off the transfer case makes a lot of noise, no one really knows if this is causing shortened life span.
A certain subset of 07s had a defective planetary cluster spacer that was putting metal shavings into the trans and transfer case, my trans needed a warranty rebuild at 21k.
Some have developed a "service park assist" message which puts the jeep in limp mode yet the message has nothing to do with the park assist. Most dealers are not knowledgeable in the inner workings of an srt so they flounder to find either a loose wire on the shifter bezel, a trans control module failure. It does not store the code.
Mine developed a thermostat leak, it was the gasket although the dealer wants you to buy the whole item for $45, the lx forums have the part number for just the gasket.
DJ Red Barron 01-10-2009, 12:45 PM I have an 08 that is my DD. I've got 31k on the clock in roughly 16 months. So far, no major problems to really speak of. It's been to the dealer for routine service and a MyGig update.
It does have the Auto-Up window gremlin. But in order to fix that, I'd have to strip out a good bit of my Dynamat. And since Chrysler isn't willing to foot the bill to replace it, I am going to opt to just deal with the gremlin.
I have also gotten the "Service Park Assist" error. Usually, this only happens after it's rained and there is a road film buildup on the sensors. But I haven't noticed a limp mode associated with this. And once the water dries, the problem goes away. Also, my backup sensors are painted. Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or not.
My gas mileage is about normal for these vehicles. It's not an econobox, so fuel mileage was never really a concern. The ride is a bit rough due to the run-flats and sport suspension. but again, this vehicle is what it is. I personally don't mind the rougher ride. It's a bit loud in the cabin. But that's partly due to the Borla S. To take care of some of that, I covered the interior in Dynamat. It helped some. I have noticed the transfer case noise increase when the traction control is turned off. Hopefully this won't hurt anything. But if it does, Chrysler gets to pay for it (for now anyway).
That's all I've got for now. Overall, I am very pleased. I've had some fun DDs over the years. The Jeep is probably my favorite.

How's he supposed to use the search engine for that?
What's he supposed to search "problems with Srt8."All he'll get is people with Blowers blowing up transfer cases and tranny's.
Put it in the search bar and see what comes up.
The search engine on this forum is worthless, the forum is laid out piss poor, and their's no stickies for questions everyone asks.
Oh and there's 400 search Nazi's.
To answer the original question. I was in the same boat as you a month ago. I was looking for negatives, too.
So far the negatives are:
Relatively high maintenance-even if you do it yourself, xfer case fluid is about $40 quart.
Gas milease sucks, and the 22 gallon tank is a joke.
Oh and if you buy an 06, you'll want an 08
If you buy buy an 07, you'll want an 08.
If you buy an 08, you'll wish you got the HID option.
It has as many spark plugs as valves.
Doesn't really have awd if you get stuck in snow.
Low front end, and expensive to put a tow switch on.
You'll be tempted to mod the crap out of it.
Lack of Online community forum substance.
Positives:
Neck breaking looks
Low profile with the POPO
Ballz out speed
Good for Costco Runs
Good Brakes
Great seats
Optioned nicely for a Jeep
.88g's in skidpad
Did I mention it's fast?
I'd get it
mortimer 01-10-2009, 11:13 PM 12k miles on my 2008 so far, no dealer trips other than brake squeal at 6k miles (and soon will be taking it in for that again)
You mention you have a few friends with one, if you've ridden with them I'm sure you know how the ride is like (a bit stiff or "sporty"), the neck-snapping launches, and tight handling. Replacing the OEM runflats with new tires will smooth out the ride alot, or so I've heard. I'm still running on my original tires with no signs of the tread separation others have been having.
Maintenance is a bit expensive. Oil changes are $80-$120 depending on the dealer, $50 or less if you do it yourself and get a good deal on the oil. Expect 13mpg or less city driving. Traction in the snow is so-so but can't expect much in that area from performance tires, even with AWD. That being said it's still better than RWD.
Get a new '09 if you can, or new '08 if you can find one somewhere. Buy the biggest, best warranty you can afford. The MyGig radio system is awesome. If you're going to mod the BWoody CAI and Diablo Predator should be first on your list, less than $800 for both and will probably drop your ET by 0.3 or more.
All in all it's an awesome rig, much more of a sleeper than the other SRT models (except maybe the 300C). No one driving a 'stang, C5 vette, or BMW 3-series expects to get their a$$ handed to them by an SUV. The feeling after slamming those guys is priceless!

Well ive only had my car for 3 weeks but ill offer my opinion. I was cross shopping with the Trailblazer SS.
Positives: All what pure said plus:
Relitively nice inside, compared to chevy
Less rattles
Lots of options on the Jeep
Lots less wind noise.
Lastly, after spending some time on the TBSS forums, even though our jeeps have some problems, they seem to be more nitnoid (ie, really picky owners with high expectations, whether justified or not). The TBSS guys seem to have lots of quality/refinement problems.
As far as pures negatives heres my take:
I have to admit i havent had to do any warranty work/maintenence yet. As far as maintenence cost, i cant imagine its any more than any high performance vehicle on the road. They always require better fluids/more spark plugs, ect ect.
Gas milage: we all know it sucks, we all knew that going into purchase, its not like the window sticker lied, and in my option the sticker is a little underrated (jeep actually does better). So no one should complain about the milage, it would have been nice to have like a 25 gal tank though.:D
I bought an 07 and i could care less about the 08. The two things i would have liked on my 07 though is the HIDs and the smaller key. Ill just buy an HID retrofit but we all know its not the same. As far as the grey interior i like it better than the black, i dont care what all of you say.
Havent driven in snow so this is second hand info but youll hear mixed things about the AWD in the snow. I cant imagine its THAT bad, i bet it works fine, its gotta be better than a straight RWD car. That being said its probably no subaru or 4x4.
And thats all i have to say.
SRT-MANA 01-11-2009, 02:27 AM I would not drop it if its your DD....mine is but its not my DD..I do miss the stock comfort, not to mention the less noise,thump,creek,squeek..etc.
oman srt8 01-11-2009, 02:46 AM no problem ;);)

HMMMM, other than the GY issue mines been one of the most reliable I've ever had!
dbrisson 01-11-2009, 08:44 AM With an 08 I would have hoped jeep and SRT engineers fixed some of the issues that plagued the marque.
The 07 service park assist problem compunds itself in that fact the it gives the same error whether its a simple park assist sensor issue or more complicated trans / shift issue. Some coder was asleep at the wheel during the error tree coding.
08's have a different / faster BUS system thus the mygig radio and other improvements. There are kinks there as the Chargers and 300's have a myriad of mygig small issues with hard drives, BUS etc.
1 get 15- 16 mpg per computer, i havent calculated it manually yet, but it feels about right.
