: Rear fog light harness - possible sales
Mango 01-15-2007, 03:07 PM Hi all,
My dad and I worked up a simple plug and play harness to activate the rear fogs on our trucks. This would take you 10 minutes tops to plug in, and it would use the existing trailer plug. There is NO cutting/modifications to the vehicle needed.
Would you guys be interested in the harnesses if we made up a batch of say....10 or 15 of them? They are somewhat time consuming to make, since everything we do is "better than factory" as far as loom, weatherproofing, soldering of plugs, etc. My dad is a technician with N.B.C. Broadcasting and does this type of work.
What would something like this sell for? We're not trying to rip anyone off, just making sure it would be worth the time and effort.
****EDIT: Added pictures. They function as STOP and TURN SIGNALS. When applying the brake, and activating a left or right turn signal, they flash! Wicked cool and ADDED SAFETY at night.
This is what they look like at night while just applying the brake.

Braking while backing up. ###For those of you with a 2007 with backup camera, these lights brighten the view as well if you lightly hold the brake while backing up! BONUS! XD

I'd be in if the price was right!!
Razorecko 01-15-2007, 03:36 PM I'd definitley be in for it.
Mango 01-15-2007, 03:37 PM What would you guys say something like this should sell for? We honestly have no clue. To do a run of 10 harnesses, the cost for materials alone would roughly be $200 from my calculations.
Goldengreek5 01-15-2007, 03:39 PM Maybe around 30-40 bucks. Anything more than that might be pushin it. Go for it. Figure you can make a C-note or more per 10 that you make.
SRedrockT8 01-15-2007, 03:48 PM i'd spend 30-40 dollars for plug & play.
just for reference, i bought a trailer harness for my wrangler from jeep & it cost $37.75.

kman999 01-15-2007, 04:15 PM interested if you can ship to Canada...
SRedrockT8 01-15-2007, 04:25 PM i'm assuming it's probably a single filament bulb since it's a fog lamp. will the lights only come on when braking & when using the turn signals & stay off the rest of the time?
I have a dumb question. I'm always inside the GC so I don't know what these lights look like. What do they do normally?
not staff 01-15-2007, 04:44 PM definitely interested, but would like to know when they would be on? ex. turn signal, braking, running lights?
Goldengreek5 01-15-2007, 04:45 PM I have a dumb question. I'm always inside the GC so I don't know what these lights look like. What do they do normally?
They normally dont do anything. They are in the rear lower bumper. The are used for the Euro version Srt8's.
ON the non-export models, the lamps do absolutley nothing. They are there, and ready for action, but aren't connected.
ronald mcglothlin 01-15-2007, 05:08 PM sound a little steep but then I don't have to think so I'm in up to 50.00
idealrides 01-15-2007, 05:13 PM yeah you would have to keep it under $50, unless it was offered by GSM in which case it could sell for $199.95.

ON the non-export models, the lamps do absolutley nothing. They are there, and ready for action, but aren't connected.
They put lights on that don't do any lighting? As Carlos Mencia says: "Dee, Dee Dee".
Black_SRT8 01-15-2007, 05:27 PM I'm down - keep us posted.
gculver 01-15-2007, 05:32 PM Keep it around $30.00, a reasonable fair price. I'm all over it.:D
Mango 01-15-2007, 06:28 PM Well, there certainly seems to be enough interest! We are still crunching the numbers, and sorting out assembly line procedures to produce around 25 harnesses. Here are pictures of them functioning at night for reference.
They function as STOP lights, and TURN SIGNALS. When you hold down the brake, and activate either left or right turn signal, they flash as well! They look FANTASTIC and this is the ONLY plug and play harness that exists.
We utilize Factory OEM equipment plugs as well. Fully sealed and weather protected. If you can plug a toaster into a wall, you can do this mod!

so these two lights on the bumper do not normally turn on with the lights? im confused, cuz ive never stood behind my car at night..lol..call me crazy.
Street WK 01-15-2007, 07:44 PM You guys have to take into account it's going to cost $20 JUST for materials, than shipping + the time to make them. Shipping and COST of materials alone will be around $30.
I'd say $50 shipped to the lower 48.

That is correct... on US models, they do nothing, until wired to do something.

LOL on the GSM comment.....Sounds about right for them, but don't forget it will probably arrive with a few connectors missing, and no instructions.
As to pricing? Would like to see it right around a high end of 40-50 shipped. Sounds good for stop and turn only, cause the existing bulbs are definitely too bright if used as a taillight. Wired mine up as tails, using a wire tap only, when I got the Jeep, saw how bright they were, unplugged them and never used them.
My question to appayipyip is are you using the four pin connector or 10/7 one? I can use the 4 pin, but other is used for my trailer set up.

Lucky No. 8 01-16-2007, 11:45 AM How about the folks north of the 48? Should be a s simple as dropping it in US Post. RM360 shipped the antennas in this fashion with no probs ... If your willing to send them north, I'm in.

Plug & Play, install in 10 minutes and NO cutting/modifications? I think you'll find this is not exactly the case. The lower lights are wired together, (in parallel), from the factory as Fog Lights, & not intended to blink separately as turn signals. I wired mine as BrakeLights/Turn Signals 8-10 months ago using the trailer wiring but found it was necessary to clip one wire that tied the positive (12V +) wire to both lower lamps. Good luck.
BTW, this is an excellent upgrade and should be at the top of every GC SRT8 owners list of things to do.

Excuse me? There are many ways to do this mod, and my method does NOT require any cutting. Just because you chose a different method does not mean that my method is wrong. You have no idea how I've done this, how can you even comment on it? Why would I tell the members that NO CUTTING was required if I did not mean it? Seriously...please keep your comments to yourself.
I've built harnesses for BOTH of my vehicles, and it is installed on BOTH of my SRT-8's. It has been working flawlessly for a week.
I've utilitzed the existing 4-pin trailer plug, a reverse plug, and OEM plugs for the lights. There is NO need to clip ANY wire. That is a fact.
If you can plug in a toaster, you can do this once you have our harness.
idealrides 01-18-2007, 06:51 PM thats a great idea to supply new bulb sockets so that no cutting is necessary.
just an idea... you can also offer the harness in special versions, for example the fogs could be wired up as reverse lights (I did this and I'm using 50 watt bulbs, it's pretty helpful at night) or you could wire them to be only brake lights not signals, etc.

(i plan on using the 4pin for my trailer when the time comes)At any RV dealer, many Auto Parts stores, as well as on countless Internet sources you can buy a 7-Pin to 4-Pin Adapter for $10 or less. The Adapter is 2-3 inches long, plugs directly into the existing 7-Pin outlet & has a standard 4-Pin receptacle to plug your trailer wire into.

I'm not trying to control any posting privileges, just letting you know that your comments pissed me off. Insinuating that I was LYING to members is a quick way to get under my skin. The way you worded your post, it seemed as if you were saying that I lied to them by telling them it was plug and play with no cutting required. When you have no prior knowledge of how my harness works, well it's not very smart to talk about it as if you know what is going on.
For everyone ELSE in this thread that wants to purchase a harness, it will use the 4 pin plug. you can still use the larger, 7 pin plug that is also at the rear right next to this one.
ronald mcglothlin 01-19-2007, 08:23 PM I believe that you have a true plug and play, and will buy one when available. Thanks

Much of a problem to do a clean install?
Bill
SilverSRT8 02-18-2007, 12:34 PM It was easy to install. I think it was the harness that I got that was causing my problems. I just need to get back under it and figure it out. I have been too lazy to do it. But I don't see the need to buy any extra kit to do it. Its a very simple install if you do it right the first time. It was int he middle of the summer and it is just too hot to be under the car and on the floor. Maybe I will play with it tonight and go to wal-mart to get the right one.

It was int he middle of the summer and it is just too hot to be under the car and on the floor. Maybe I will play with it tonight and go to wal-mart to get the right one.
i went back and got a diff harness from wal mart and re-did it in 30min and it now works at night. I am not sure what was wrong the first time.
phenwick 02-22-2007, 09:32 AM Here's my take on this; People with the backup camera complain about the poor quality of the video especially at night. Enabling the rear fogs as backup lights with the brightest bulb should help this. The more light when backing up the better. A clear lense would help even more, but people would have different opinions on the appearance of the clear lense I suppose. And then, what about the idea of infared bulbs for night? Would this increase visibility for the camera?
idealrides 02-22-2007, 09:47 AM an infrared bulb would help if the camera was black and white, but the factory camera is color. Thats a great idea though.
________
Buy extreme q vaporizer (http://vaporizers.net/extreme-vaporizer)
whiskey 02-22-2007, 11:04 AM I wonder if the rear fog lens color is through the pastic or a surface coating...
If just a coating, I am sure it could be removed...

That would be great. It would be my guess it is red plastic like the tail light.
whiskey 02-22-2007, 11:18 AM Ok, I wonder if any of the custom tail light people could make us a clear one?
phenwick 02-22-2007, 11:30 AM Yeah Wiskey, it shouldn't be to hard to fabricate. It would be great to find another application that would fit.
Hallstar 02-22-2007, 09:34 PM I put HIDs in and I can see everything...they are so bright...absolutely no problems unless the lens is dirty!!!

HobokidSRT8 03-31-2007, 10:33 AM I'm in for $40. or $50., let me know I'm really interested
synoil 03-31-2007, 03:05 PM Same here, $50 would be fine if no problem hooking up
trailer lights. By no problem I mean just plug in and play.
mrfreeze 04-03-2007, 07:04 PM any word on this ??
jonvon 04-06-2007, 12:24 AM My mechanic used a typical trailer harness like Mr.Hemi described. Did my lights during an oil change. Looks like it came from the factory...took less than an hour cost $90. Well worth it if I don't get rearended even once!
They work like another set of rear lights and flashers.
synoil 04-06-2007, 03:34 AM Any pics or part numbers?
art warner 06-22-2007, 09:12 PM I would like to buy the harness as long as I can hook up my trailer lights which I should have working next wee, let me know what I have to do.

See my April 5th comment. The harness is some 4 buck trailer harness from any auto parts place. My mechanic had one in his tool box. He added clips to keep the wiring in place and yadah-yadah I got another set of brake lights and turn signals. They do not light up when the head lights and tail lights are on...just braking, turn signaling and 4 way flashering.
Good luck!

Mango did use the word "possible" in his original post, and so far nothing has come to the table.
And, since his feelings got hurt, it looks like he picked up all his marbles and went home. So, it may very well be a dead issue.
