: Factory Grill modification
live4skins 01-04-2007, 04:01 PM Just wanted to let you all know that today I took off the grill assembly for my jeep and painted it metallic silver. I was going to coat it with a clear but it wasnt necessary. Since I'll more than likely replace it with a whole new assembly later when it becomes available.
Anyways I'll take pictures and display how easy it was later.

live4skins 01-04-2007, 06:42 PM Yes, this site is who I'm looking into purchasing down the road. I will have pictures posted tomorrow of the upper grill assembly. Tomorrow I will finish off the lower grill assembly.
live4skins 01-05-2007, 12:12 PM I have some pictures but am having trouble sending them. Can someone pm me so that I can have that person put them up? There are five pics.
Thanks in advance!

The factory grill was pretty easy to disassemble. When you pop the hood. You will see 8 round clips going down the plastic portion of the grill by the hood latch. They pop out with a scewdriver. Once you pop them up you can take out the whole assembly.
The factory painted grill is clipped onto the black mess. This is the tricky part of the whole ordeal. You have to dis lodge each on the back of the black mess grill. I started on one end and basically pulled the two apart as I went along. Made it easier for the hinges to seperate.
After that I just used rustolium can spray, in a metallic crome. Sprayed it 3 times. Let it sit for about 3 hours and wallll aaaa new grill. Have fun!

Any "how-to's" for us who have limited painting skills (materials used, any primer, etc........). Pics look great!

Ha! Just noticed your parked in the SRT reserved parking. The gas station.
I think this looks just sweet for any colour other than black. In black I prefer the mean stealth look of the front grill remaining black. But sweet job!
sanscritt 04-13-2007, 01:34 PM Did you do the bottom portion of the grill on the lower fascia? Does anyone know how that comes out?

That link don't work, but I can tell you now.......your painted stock version looked just as good if not better than the Racemess.
I still can't believe how ridiculously over priced the Racemess is.
Derwood98 04-13-2007, 10:46 PM This may be a silly question, but wouldn't a SRT8 (black) look really sweet with a stock chrome grill from a standard Jeep Grand Cherokee? That way you get the left to right sweep with the lights and chrome with the lower chrome on the intake?

Ahhh...........no!
Derwood98 04-13-2007, 11:03 PM Have you seen one or are you just being a turkey?
Rick G 04-13-2007, 11:27 PM Just answering your question.........now go smoke some more refer and come up with some more bad ideas.
Ricky... you're in my world now.
Behave. Drug accusations aren't a joke.

hound 04-14-2007, 04:38 AM I am leaning toward a silver SRT8. I loved the look of the 5.9 grill. I may paint the grill the same color as the jeep.
sanscritt 04-14-2007, 12:08 PM I painted mine yesterday. Used Chrome paint, dried in like 3 minutes. Bottom was a bear to get in and out, but I think it turned out really good. I will wait and see out long it lasts, but I am very pleased. Total cost $5 and about an hour total work.

That looks outstanding!!! Nicely done!
squigmang 04-14-2007, 12:23 PM looks good!! how about a pic from a little further away?
OurZoo 04-14-2007, 01:29 PM I'll have to make my mind up, but I'll probably do it. Looks niiiiice!
 Silly question, what would the OEM "plastic-mesh" look like if it was actually chrome plated? I know there are a few places that chrome plastic, I've had some of the interior stuff on my '70 done. http://www.autoinstruments.com/chrome.htm
sanscritt 04-14-2007, 02:45 PM Here are a couple from further away as requested.

Nice work! Did you spray clear coat on it to protect from chipping?
OurZoo 04-14-2007, 03:31 PM My minds made up. Awesome mod and inexpensive to boot! Did you go with the same paint as Live?

Greggy...he accused himself. If you look in his sig. he calls himself Refer Man.
Derwood98 04-14-2007, 07:08 PM All, just to get the story straight. I call myself refer man because I sell commercial refrigeration products. aka refer short for refrigeration. The reference to just started smokin' because I just recently purchased an SRT8. Jeesh. Besides, I see there is another individual who was wondering what it would look like to have the grill chrome plated. I think its a good idea.
Derwood98 04-14-2007, 09:31 PM Here is a mouse paint version of what a chrome grill would look like on a black Jeep. It might look really sharp with SS inserts.

I'd like to see just the "plastic-mesh" part of the grill chromed, not the housing(like a Limited).
sanscritt 04-15-2007, 08:53 AM Nice work! Did you spray clear coat on it to protect from chipping?
Not yet. I was in a hurry and it was late. It's not that hard to do so I will redo it later if necessary.

gspot17 04-26-2007, 07:16 PM Has anyone put the black racemesh into the black srt-8 grill. I know it's roughly the same look as the factory but the mesh is much tighter and I wonder how much better it looks. I'm sure it definitely doesn't look $700 better but still am curious.
cobrakid 04-27-2007, 06:45 AM I wonder what it would look like on a Red Rock, or Inferno to have it
the body color??????????
