Clueless

So I’m in NYC last week walking to my biz meeting in mid-town. When I see at the red light, facing me, an SRT Jeep and the new M5 squaring off. Light goes green and they’re off, I’m about 200 yards from the light. They’re flying, the rest of the cars are just crossing the intersection when these two pass me. I stop dead in my tracks with a huge, stupid grin on my face watching one-hell-of-a-show! I can hear the roar and the tires chirping as the gears go 1st to 2nd. One of those shows that gets your heart jumping (even though you're standing still) and makes you smile inside to know that some people out there appreciate and love same things you do. M5 sounds like an F1 at the red line and the Jeep’s rumble is unmistakable. My grin deflates a little bit as they pass me. M5 is ahead, Jeep’s bumper is in line with it’s front wheels. In the end it looked like Jeep lost, I just couldn’t tell by how much. All in all it was quite pleasant to watch two car enthusiast REALLY enjoying their rides.

Now, I don’t know if the GC fell asleep during launch, or whatever else could’ve happened but I wish it went the other way. Anyhow, if it had to be this way I’m glad it ended up being an M5 as I LOVE BMWs.

What's the Stats for the M5 - I can't seem to find a reported 0-60 time
Were they modified?

Motor Trend says 0-60 in 4.5 (w/"optimized mode"?) and ¼ in 12.9 @ 115mph. If the Jeep was stock, he didn't stand a chance. :(

Edit - The M5's "default mode" drops those times to 6.0 & 14.4 @ 102, respectively.

Houston Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff - high compression, hi revs for the M5 - kinda dissapointing but at least I didn't pay $85K

Don't know if anything was modified. But on a dry pavement with the launch control M5 is VERY fast.... either way it all just looked GOOD

I love the M5. Always have. Now with the 500 horse V10 it's some performance sedan if you have the coin to drop on it. I have heard the M5 at WOT and Clueless' description is perfect "sounds like an F1" jet.

It looks like there is a manual gearbox option

Clueless - could you tell if it was auto or manual?

All new M5's are SMG (Sequentual Manual Gearbox) and they are fast, i know they would win in a race. i just rallied with one up a canyon. and although he never passed me I could tell he was a bit faster. expecially at high speeds.

For 2007 you can get manual 6spd in the U.S. (same off the shelf unit as used in the 550i), although it has stability control that can't
be fully turned off. C&D said that even in the "sport" mode that it's very aggressive and more or less spoils the car.

Word is that later 07 vehicles will have a DSC off capability.

I couldn't tell much about the M5 other than that it looked good doing it's thing. The driver had a white shirt and a tie on with the blazer hanging on the hanger in the back. I'm telling you the whole thing looked amazing!

The shift 1st to 2nd was perfect. I used to have e39 (the pervious body style) 6-speed and it would be quite difficult to get a perfect 1-to-2 shift just right. This thing just did it and the quick chirp of tires was sweet music that followed.

I do have to say that our SRT looked good as well doing it's thing. Just a bit more of a "BAD AZZ" with tinted windows.

Personally I love and give props to people that enjoy what they have and don't just spend the money for the emblem of it all. Both guys get thumbs up.:)

While the new M5's V10 is nice, I still prefer the previous E39 M5.

I love mine, its been 104,000 miles of heaven so far and its not going anywhere! Even after test driving the new one, I just decided to put the money into mods on mine.

The vehicles are not that far apart. Stock Jeeps have hit the mid 4's 0-60 and upper 12's/very low 13's in the 1/4. Weighing 600 lbs less than the Jeep and having +75 hp seems like the M5 should do a little bit better, not to say though that its numbers are not impressive.

I don't recall the new M5 having launch control in the US?
