: K&N Drop in Filter

Is there any benefit to disconnecting the battery for 15 min for only a drop in K&N? My intial thought is no, but since it could potentially flow more air into the engine, I wanted to check with you guys. Thanks in advance.

Check out this informal test of air filters. If you subscribe to his philosophy and testing (I like what he has come up with) then you’ll see that there is virtually no difference in the amount of “flow”. If you consider what an air filter is required to do, then you start realizing that filtering out "crap" is MUCH more important than allowing a little bit more air into the engine. What should be considered when getting a new air filter is it's filtering capabilities not as much it's flow characteristics. Sort of makes sense to me....

BTW, this guy says that K&N IS the BEST filter for “flow”, to the tune of 0.14%!!! LOL….. I have had K&Ns before and have serviced them regularly believing in the hype. Soooo. I’m sticking with the OEM filters now. Same results for less work and money. :D

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone else have any opinions?

Don't worry about resetting your 'puter for a filter change. Did you already buy the filter? I have one here, with about a month of use, that I'll send to you at no cost, if you want it.

I have not purchased the K&N yet. WOW, I appreciate that very much!! Any reasons why you aren't using it?

Installing a K&N filter has always been done within hours of driving any new vehicle off a lot. It's just something I've always done. But shortly after I bought the rig, I ended up going with a complete intake kit, so this filter is just sitting here in a box.

Shoot me an email with your mailing address and I'll ship it out to you this morning.

With the exception of my dirt bikes and lawn equipment, I do like ge2 does. Also, I always keep the stock filter so I can use it while waiting for the K&N to dry.

Is that right, a 0.14% increase in flow? Clean air is my main concern. Besides, if that figure is right, put it into perspctive; 0.14 % of a dollar is .14 cents. If you had 500 CFM of air flow and you got an increase of 0.14 %, you'd be flowing a whopping 500.7 CFM. If it were a 14% increase, it would be worth it for that, but I can't see how a filter is going to make that big of a difference.

jlandbl, if the performance of the OEM and K&N filters (believing in the study) are virtually identical then the fact that you have to service K&N yourself is the show stopper for me. I found it to be a pain-in-da-butt experience…

I’m happier now that I can spend the extra hour detailing my ride instead of messing around with oiling the filter.:)
