: Transmission fluid change -- fluid wasn't changed!
Grip Grip 11-03-2008, 10:46 AM I took my Jeep into a dealership in Arizona a month ago and had my transfer case, rear end, and transmission fluids changed. Last week on my drive back from Ohio, I notice a shutter around 1,800 RPM's plus the Jeep was slow to engage when changing from Park into Reverse or Drive.
I took the Jeep to my local dealership to have the problem looked into. They informed me that the transmission pan looks as though it hadn't been removed and that the fluid was black! I had them completely flush the transmission so that the torque converter would be emptied of fluid as well--$460. :(
Now the shutter is gone as well as the slow engagement.
Only problem now is the occasional smoke cloud behind the Jeep from the tech overfilling the transmission--at least I hope that's what it's from. Is there any problem with me letting this take care of itself? I also have fluid accumulation on the hatch glass.
robpp 11-03-2008, 11:05 AM This is from long ago experience, may mean nothing today.
But back when, there was some vacuum part on the transmission would go bad, when you hit the gas a white cloud.
But dang, if you go t fluid on the back glass, take it someplace.
Even a good Amoco can service the fluid.
aplatero1984 11-03-2008, 11:10 AM having an overfilled transmission could cause a few things: it might not shift properly due to aeriating(air bubbles) in the fluid but man, I couldn't see why smoke would come out like that by having the fluid overfilled?
I'd have it looked at. I cracked my '70's tranny case almost in half & only had fluid on the bottom, none on the tail section. The smoke is hopefully just burning tranny fluid getting on the exhaust.
MD 44 11-03-2008, 11:34 AM Did the dealership in AZ you went to charge you for the flush? When actually they NEVER flushed the transmission fluid? That sounds very shady.

I have never seen an overfilled NAG1 smoke unless it was spilled on the exhaust.
Overfilling a NAG1 is VERY serious.
It does have a float which will stop SLIGHTLY overfilled trannys from the ATF4 rising up into the rotating gears.
Once it is overfilled filled where it rises above the float....very bad things happen....aerating fluid.
The air bubbles in the fluid obviously compress and do not apply proper pressure to the clutch packs.
Total NAG1 failure follows.

DevssrT 11-03-2008, 12:04 PM The smoke isnt from there being too much fluid...its from fluid over spilling onto the exhaust...saw it happen when I had my 99 Jeep and serviced the tranny and diffs...
Vinnysrt8 11-03-2008, 01:42 PM Bring it back to the dealer and have them check it out so nothing bad happens.
Grip Grip 11-03-2008, 04:49 PM Did the dealership in AZ you went to charge you for the flush? When actually they NEVER flushed the transmission fluid? That sounds very shady.
Actually, I paid them to service the transmission and they didn't.
Bring it back to the dealer and have them check it out so nothing bad happens.
I'm bringing it back as soon as I'm back in town, unless I I take it to a dealer here in Charlotte, NC.

Any dealer you recommend in Charlotte? Also, are there any dragstips still open in the Charlotte area?
Fendiesal 11-03-2008, 06:37 PM theirs a dragstrip in morrisville just on top of charlotte up I-77. i believe i'm going saturday if it's over 50 degrees which i believe it's going to be. are you working down here or something? i'm actually working at the duke powerplant off exit 36 in morrisville. possible meet?
Harrison@Stage6 11-03-2008, 06:46 PM I had fluid spray onto the back of my rig. It was leaking from the bad o-ring seal. I had it done 2x. It looks like little bits of fluid all over the back? Have you checked the garage floor after it sits for awhile for fluid on the ground? Mine didn't leave much, but it was there. Maybe a quarter size overnight, but while underway, it apperently came out much more. Just my expierences..... good luck with the sale!! :D
Crookster777 11-03-2008, 06:56 PM Bring it to Ace. He's in NC. Not sure how far away from you he is.
Toothmonger 11-03-2008, 07:02 PM Actually, I paid them to service the transmission and they didn't.

I take mine down to Stateline Jeep/dodge/chry in Fort Mill, SC. It's probably 20-25 minutes from harris/i-85, isn't that where that ikea is going up?

I'm working in Charlotte for the next two weeks. Let's try and meet up at the track Saturday if it's favorable weather. My contractor is actually working this Saturday, but I'm sure I'll be able to sneak off without getting too much grief.

I'm sure the transmission was simply overfilled, so I think I'm out of the woods. I think I blew off the excess driving down. Gl with the sale to you too. ;)
Bring it to Ace. He's in NC. Not sure how far away from you he is.
I'm not sure how far away Ace is, but if he's fairly close he could meet up with me at the track Saturday.

Thanks for the info regarding the dealership, but I may not need to go after all. I believe the excess fluid blew out on the drive down. The Ikea store is located at the City Boulevard exit of I-85, about one mile from UNC-Charlotte.

That's just what they call it. I rarely do anything tuning wise--I just ice the intake and adjust the tire pressure.

Grip Grip 11-07-2008, 04:19 PM The buffoons back home overfilled my transmission fluid, but the dealership Joe recommend got it squared away. :D
By the way, I saw Joe-the-Dentist's Jeep on this lift while I was there. It sure looked sad like that. :(
