: Navy's Turbo 6.1 Update

Got my Jeep back from southern hotrod with the Parmaount Perf. Tranfer case in it. Drives so much better now, no vibrations, and no clutch packs under my ass about to melt into a molten glob of goo.

Right now there are lots of issues that still need to be addressed, the fuel system needs to be revised so I stop losing pressure, this is mainly due to the mounting location of the fuel pump, the length of low-pressure line and filter location. Also the turbo piping is too small, waste-gate is undersized, and up/down pipes improperly fabricated. Stage Six is going to give me a quote on monday for some piping fabrication, and if they can't help, I may just send the thing to Eddie for a refab.

Poured in five gallons of Torco 118 Leaded to a tank of 93 Sunoco Unleaded and put it on a conservative tune of 10lbs, this should be equivalent to around an 8psi on a stock compression, as my compression has been dropped to 8.5:1. The brakes will only hold the Jeep to around 2250 RPM, and boost doesn't kick in until around 3800 RPM, so there's about half a second of lag, but it feels like a lifetime until it hits power. This is evident in the 60'.

60' : 2.08
1/4: 12.13/119mph

Although it irks me to see a 12, my goal was for an 11 second truck on pump gas and low boost. All I need to do is figure out how to shave off a respectable 60' time and I should be able to easily run 11.8. I'd hate to have to spray to get out of the hole, but short of a trans-brake I don't see much alternative.

Turned up the boost to 20psi to see what would happen. First run went into Limp mode when it hit second gear... I believe this is where BJB had issues. Second run hit the top of second gear and then WHACK!!!! Sounded like I blew something to the moon, but turned out to be a boost tube blew out of one of the flex couplings. This gets back to the previous issues of the turbo piping being set up imporoperly, and the thing has a history of blowing boost tubes. Also the truck is pulling timing at the top of the gears, which means the tuning could be much better. I'm running about 101 Octane and the tune is designed to pull timing when the knock is detected to prevent any detonation. Next thing on the list is to bump it to 110 Octane and see if the power is any better, or else I"ll have to go to a snow system.

Overall I'm about half way to my goal so I'll keep you guys updated.

HarrisonZ can fill you in better as I gave him a little action from a 45mph roll the other day against his heads/cam/tunnel-monster jeep.

With larger piping, you will increase the boost lag. If it were me, I would consider a smaller exhaust housing to spool the turbo faster and leave the piping how it is. If you are able to get 20psi out of its current configuration, I dont think the piping is too small. Good luck with it.

Good luck with the turbo build/revision. Want to see your results give you consistency and power.

i hope you're using constant torque clamps for the couplers - that'll make a huge difference in blowing piping off.

sorry to beat a dead horse... but last time i asked anyone about the limp mode into 2nd with big power, i was told it was a thing of the past.

going out on a limb, i'm thinking the LX guys arent having that problem?

Played with the launch a little more today, fixed the boost tube and managed to get some new results, 11 second club at least. I don't know what the corrected numbers are.

Boost: 10psi
Fuel: 100 Octane Low-Led (R+M/2)
OAT: 70 deg F
Humid: 73%
60': 1.92
1/8ET: 7.65
1/8MPH: 95.6
1/4ET: 11.92
1/4MPH: 118.6

:thinkerg: Trust me I'm ready to ditch the SCT, nobody else uses it, thus no one else will touch it. Once I correct a few architecture problems I'm switching to Diablo and never looking back.

Eddie...need you to work your majic on this rig.
Those 60' times are similar to a 4 cylinder Chevy Vega!

Nice work Winston. What's your thought of going with a higher stall converter to assist with your 60' times?

Hey Winston.... I don't have heads/cam. All stock with headers/exhaust, intake, and tune. But it was fun watching you pull me and not stopping at ALL!! There are a few things on the truck which could be better and designed better for better efficiency. Along with that adding an electronic boost controller and better wastegate since it's leaking. Everything that is to be done is still up in the air as Dwight and Winston will talk this week coming up. They are to talk again tomorrow. I guess the update is TBD. All in all, it's a screamer. Can't wait until things come together a little better. Should be crazy!!

I can't say for sure. Remember the Diablo countdown? :D

I've supposedly already invetested a lot into the converter... furnace braised the fins, full weld wherever there was previously a tac weld, and reshaped the fins for better turbo spool.

What I'm told is that stall speed is actually a function of the power you're making, and that its not set in stone. I'm getting better at launching and will address the converter/cam/tune at the same time to make sure that they are all working in unison.

Wait for HPTuners software. ;)

I wish I could wait, I'm scrambling to get a Diablo tune on it to compare apples to appls, once I get back from Afghanistan I'll look into whatever 'new' is coming out. Not looking to be the "first person" to do anything anymore, its too much time and money. It would be nice to have tunes written from all 3 software companies, that way I could take it anywhere that could "claim to outdo the other guy".

I'm off to go deer hunting tomorrow, wish me luck. Stage six agreed to redo all the hotside piping on my turbo, should be a looker when its done, much better than the muffler-shop job in there now.

This problem still exists. In my case its when the engine spins up to 4000rpm out of the hole and the vehicle is barely moving it will immediately shift into 2nd gear. It is a converter flash issue.

Sounds good Bill....I was getting ready to go back to a "tighter" converter after swapping it for the third time!
