Snow tires are a must in the Colorado mountains where I live. We just got hit with three feet of snow! Stock Goodyear's are okay for very light snow when new but terrible after 10K miles, or if the snow is thick or there is any ice, watch out.

I put on Pirelli Scorpion Snow and Ice tires and it's a world of difference. Unfortunately Tire Rack sold me the wrong size and said it would be okay, and it is not. They gave me 275/40/20 rear and 255/45/20 front. Too small of a diameter in the rear so the traction control keeps intervening thinking the wheels are spinning so I have to drive with it off.

Tire Rack worked with Pirelli and corrected the problem and Pirelli ran a production run of 295/40/20. I will get the new set next week, 295 rear and 265 front so it will keep the same OD. The Pirelli's are definately smaller than the Goodyear's size to size. The 255 Pirelli on the front doesn't have the same width as the Goodyear and leaves a lot of rim lip exposed. I'm sure that will be corrected with the 265.

If Goodyear rates the the OEM run flats at 7 for snow, they would have to rate the Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow at 30! It is night and day. Of course the huge tires don't get as good traction as smaller tires in the snow, but they are going to repay you when it's dry. The Pirelli's have the Snowflake certification.

I put the pirelli's 275/40 20 on both ends on stock wheels. I also think the traction is so much better as not to compare at all. Works great and traction control works normally.
