I had some key bus. investors over to Canada from the EU the past couple of weeks and asked them what what they thought of the jeep srt8. Interesting result ... they thought for the the US (which they assume inculdes Canada) DCX must post good numbers, but for the the global situation the GC SRT8 should be declared illlegal !!!! .. as should any SRT or SS or SVT vehicle. I'm am still thinking about their comments, but am wondering what other opinions might be ?

As long as there is someone that wants the product, it will be manufactured. Simple economics whether legal or illegal.

I guess what I found interesting was that while they found a need for DCX to produce good numbers (i.e. profits) they felt the whole global warming thing should take precidence ... some interesting times for bus. leaders in North America I should think.

As a side note, I finally caught up with a range rover sport in my rural part of Canada and blew his doors off (even with winter rubber on) ! I'm so conflicted

Illegal? Why? What did they mean by "global situation", fuel consumption or the environment? Did they recommend hybrid vehicles by any chance? If so, show them this:

http://www.auto123.com/en/info/news/news,view.spy?artid=59574&pg=1

"This study shows that popular hybrids such as the Ford Escape, Honda Accord and Civic, and Toyota Prius are at the back of the pack when you add up the energy necessary to plan, build, sell, drive and dispose of a vehicle from initial concept to scrappage."

"Indeed, the study shows that those hybrids can cost society (if not their owners) three times more per mile in energy costs over the lifetime of the vehicle than many cars, trucks and SUVs of all kinds. Hybrid vehicles are even a lot more expensive than the same car with a traditional powertrain."

Another interesting article per the Toyota Prius:

Toyota factory turns landscape to arid wilderness (http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=417227&in_page_id=1770)

Toyota produced nearly 180,000 Prius cars last year, some 4,000 of which were sold in Britain. Last week 14 MPs from all parties claimed they had exchanged their petrol-guzzling vehicles for a Prius or similar hybrid.

But some experts doubt whether the Prius even wins the argument over fuel consumption.

Robert Fowler, of the Battery Vehicle Association, said: "It is questionable whether it does any more miles to the gallon than a good diesel.

"The hybrid system has a very small battery so most of the time it's operating as a petrol car, particularly out of town and above 30mph."

Their use of the word illegal may well have been an english issue. However, the general undertone of the conversation was North America is way behind on the whole climate issue (I wouldn't be surprised if they watched the Al Gore flick on the way over; and being dutch weren't thrilled with some of the graphics ... it was playing on my trip to their back yard a few weeks back). I won't even get into what their opinion on other significant issues were.

This was the first time anyone had anything but a very positive reaction about the jeep. Caught me a little off guard I suppose. Incidently the rides of the three guys are 2 BMWs and a Volvo ... none of which have stellar performance wrt gas economy.
