: Painted wheels
AutoMag 12-21-2006, 03:07 PM Ok, the excitement's worn off and I'm tired of seeing brake dust on the wheels...I'm not gonna change pads because I wanna be able to stop this beast, and I like the wheels too much to get new ones, sooooo...I'm thinking of getting them painted. Two questions...First, has anyone done this yet, and if so, could you share some pics? Second, any ideas as to how much something like this should cost?
Thanks, and everyone have a great (and safe!) Holiday Season! :)
omegaman 12-21-2006, 03:10 PM Powder coat them. I'm getting mine done black after the holidays. You're looking at about $100/wheel. Powder coating is much more durable than paint.
DRIHEAT 12-21-2006, 03:19 PM http://www.z06vette.com/gallery/data/500/135CleanZwheel.jpghttp://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c314/Z06M16A1/Z06HiView.jpgI was thinking about painting mine the same color as my old Z06. It was a gray metallic that did not show the brake dust. I can get it for about $100/wheel.
AutoMag 12-21-2006, 03:46 PM Power coating...hmmm, is it available in any color, or just a select few?
As far as color goes, I also have a Z06 ('03) and think the factory grey paint is a bit light. I think I'd go with the Competition Grey wheel color available on the new 'vette. It's a bit darker, and would hide the dust better, IMHO.
Thanks for the input!
Goldengreek5 12-21-2006, 04:40 PM This is the look I want. It should look good on silver also.
PsychoSRT8 12-21-2006, 04:50 PM that looks GREAT!!! love the black rims!!!

That's my goal, except I'm removing the side trim too. I'll probably swap out the chrome under the windows as well for the stock black on the lesser model GCs.
PsychoSRT8 12-21-2006, 04:59 PM honest opinion is if you desgard the chrome accents it'll look "too" black.. i think the way it is in the pic is perfect. again just my opinion

To me, you can't go too black (or too monochromatic - right GE2??). If I could figure out a way to black out the headlights, I'd do that too.
Goldengreek5 12-21-2006, 05:16 PM I wanna try and get a polished lip going around the powdercoat. Granted we really dont have a lip on the jeep rim, I wonder how it would turn out.
PsychoSRT8 12-21-2006, 05:20 PM maybe someone could photoshot the chromed lip look?
DRIHEAT 12-21-2006, 05:46 PM There's no lip on the stock GC SRT8 wheels.
renntech36 12-21-2006, 05:50 PM my GC srt8 is all black. Semi Gloss black wheels and semi gloss black door and window trim, as well as the front chrome piece and rear bumper piece. The only chrome left on the outside of the truck is the 4 parking dots.
Oh, btw, I powdercoated the wheels myself, and while it was a PITA, it was well worth it. Shows NO dirt!
Also, make sure the powdercoat company strips the inside of the wheel of the clear, as the entire wheel is cleared, and if it is not fully removed, the powdercoat will not stick! pictures coming soon!
AutoMag 12-21-2006, 07:47 PM This is the look I want. It should look good on silver also.
Now that's what I'm talkin' about!
To offset the black, I'd do the SRT and brakes in red.
OurZoo 12-21-2006, 10:10 PM Those rims will look better on a silver one, IMO. Usually the only black rims I end up liking have a chrome polished lip. The break dust does suck balls though!!!
Ok-- take this for what it's worth. It's all based on personal experience.
If you want the WHOLE rim one color, then powder coat. Powder coating is FAR more durable than paint, but if you just want protions of the rim done then paint is easier (yet still a lot of work). With just part of the rim done, it means masking before blasting. You won't just paint over the polished & cleared aluminum. You'll need to have the area that you want painted / coated media blasted first. This means that you'll have a noticeable edge where paint / powder would meet the non painted area. Preparation is paramount with wheel painting or powder coating.
Here are some pics of wheels that I have had painted or powder coated.

Note: powder coating is generally not color matched. They have 'silver', 'black', 'red' etc. But not generally specific matches.

For the headlights, you can heat them in an oven and pry them open. Then just have the insides painted black.:)
Mango 12-22-2006, 04:49 AM I wish our brake calipers came powdercoated red instead of black.
HoustonSRT-8 12-22-2006, 07:03 AM Also, keep in mind that powdercoating can weaken a wheel after being baked that much. I remember seeing pics of a C5 Vette wheel that was powdercoated and all 5 spokes broke free from the hub during an autocross session.

I've heard a slightly different reason (actually many reasons) not to powdercoat wheels. All the reasons point to either a heat related weakening of the wheel or lack of ability to visually inspect for stress cracks near the hub. Whatever the real reason PC is NOT recommended for wheels.
I've done it to at least part of 3 piece wheels, on 3 different occasions, and have never had any issues at all.

I thought that's what I was referring to?

Yes, I was agreeing with you.

ah, ok. :D
Krush 12-23-2006, 10:36 AM I still like a little chrome with black.

HoustonSRT-8 12-23-2006, 11:11 AM While I'm not much for chrome, I do believe that a black wheel needs a lip of some sort. Otherwise the wheel gets lost in the tire. See below:

AutoMag 12-23-2006, 10:26 PM Here's a car that just doesn't need a chrome lip (it could use some tint on the windows, though)

MBLACK07 12-29-2006, 12:40 AM AutoMag,
The black on black Jeep that GoldenGreek5 posted is my car.
I had H.O.T Motorsports in Tustin, Ca do it for me.
It was a one day turn around!
The cost was about $560 (I can't remember exact cost).
Call Mike at 949.733.8468.
Tell him Micah sent you.
Thanks!
My truck goes to paint next week and the result will be...
little leo 01-05-2007, 06:15 PM wow should we just call you michael night. and is your trucks name kitt. lol, just playing, congrats on your paint, imo no offence i do like the all black truck but i think the rims kinda get lost in it all. and our rims are to nice for that. but nice job on the attempt. i give you alot of credit to paint 1500 rims each.
