: Oil Change
PhillyJeep 10-17-2008, 09:41 AM Can anyone help a newbie with details on how to change the oil on our cars?
I got banged at the dealer last time and would prefer to do it myself.
Thanks in advance
Vinnysrt8 10-17-2008, 09:49 AM Buy 7 quarts of oil buy the mopar oil filter or a fram oil filter they r both good.
Drain the oil out u will see the drain plug under the motor, when it done draining out put the plug in, then take the filter out its toward the front of the motor it aliitle hard u would need a filter wrench and make sure u have something to catch the oil for the filter make sure the old o-ring came off with the old filter then put some oil on the o-ring on the new filter make it tight my hand. fill the motor up with 7 quarts and start it shut it off about 2-3 time then start it again and it should be good.
BlackJeepSRT 10-17-2008, 09:54 AM Stay away from the Fram! Mopar or Mobil filters only. Maybe K&N too, but I don't have any experience with them.
Vinnysrt8 10-17-2008, 10:03 AM I have a fram and its good.

Pay close attention to this step. I just go to one of those 10 min quick lubes and bring my own Amsoil and Amsoil filter and tip the guy down in the hole $10.00 for doing it for me

If you haven't already read it on here, Advace has a sell going on right now--five quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic plus the Mobil 1 oil filter for $29. :D

I disagree Fram is good chit. I've used Fram filters in dozens of motors over the years.
Three of those motors had some internals break. Two wrist pin bushings and one spun a rod bearing. I cut open the Fram on all three after the failure and it caught every last particle of metal in the oil. Even the super-fine "gold dust" created from the wrist pin bushings. Fram is good.
DevssrT 10-17-2008, 11:53 AM DO NOT go with Fram- but 7 Qts of Mobil One Ow-40 and buy a Mobil One Oil filter...this engine was built around these products, no need to switch.
mortimer 10-17-2008, 11:55 AM That being said about the Fram -- I think they're great and all -- but I still use the Mobile1 oil/filter on my rig :)
Vinnysrt8 10-17-2008, 02:13 PM I use fram on all the boats my dads boat has over 800 hp we use fram his whole life no problem.
SkyeHighSRT8 10-18-2008, 07:21 AM one tip:
Do like vinny said, except, put the oil plug in when you think it's all drained, change the filter(verfiy 0-ring), then take the oil plug back out and let it drain again. You will be surprised how much more oil settles out while changing the filter. The 6.1L is a slow draining engine.

I should try that so after i change the filter take the drain plug out again.
PhillyJeep 10-18-2008, 10:31 AM Thanks for the help.

magic32 10-18-2008, 09:15 PM how about some 5w-40 royal purple and a mopar filter. i just did that to the jeep. it had a thousand miles on it. royal now makes a 0w-40 for you canadian guys. or maybe some UP guys in michigan and others. does anybody know how low a temp 5w-40 is rated?
PhillyJeep 10-19-2008, 07:33 PM Thanks for the help. I plan on changing the oil Monday.
The only 0W at AutoZone said on the front european version.
Is this the right oil?
BlackJeepSRT 10-19-2008, 07:48 PM ^ Yes, I think it's considered "European" since Mercedes uses is.

Kausekaos 10-24-2008, 07:32 PM Honestly what the longest we should go between oil changes. My boy said 5k most of u say 3k. Who's right?

I HATE fram.

ResumeSpeed 10-25-2008, 05:16 AM ...I HATE fram.
Fram could probably slide up a notch on the "worst oil filters" list IF they were to upgrade from 1-ply Charmin to 2-ply Charmin. That would be an improvement over their original filters years ago when they used pages from old Sears catalogs.
Vinnysrt8 10-25-2008, 07:00 AM I dont know i love fram.
SkyeHighSRT8 10-25-2008, 07:23 AM Thanks for the help.
I will try it this weekend.
So, where's the update? How did the oil change go?
Vinnysrt8 10-25-2008, 07:29 AM How was the oil change where is the update.
PhillyJeep 10-25-2008, 09:36 AM Thanks for all the advice. The oil change went fine. The 6.1 must be a slow drainer, because after I buttoned it up and then the oil filter, I was able to drain maybe another 1/3 qt of oil.
Vinnysrt8 10-25-2008, 09:47 AM wow thats alot of extra oil that came out.

Glad it went well. It is pretty crazy how slow it drains.

so true... thats also one of the reasons i like changing my own oil... you go to a shop and they dont waste anytime which doesnt allow all the oil to drain out properly...
also fram is fine silly to say it is not like someone said earlier
changing the oil on our rigs is so easy!!

nobody should even be giving their opinion on oil change intervals without factoring in driving habbits, distances, climate etc...
