: help! Trailer wiring in a 2008?
08silver 10-15-2008, 01:14 PM Just had the vehicle in to the dealer yesterday to get trailer wiring installed/hooked up/activated, whatever was needed. After looking it over and checking things, the service writer came out and told me 1) I need a special harness - $165 - only one currently in existence and I better order it right away. 2) The install would still involve splicing wires into the existing wiring, total cost of harness and install - $300.
Whoa! Is he kidding? Needless to say I did not order the special harness. Since this is a small dealership and mine is the only SRT they have ever sold, I can understand if they are ignorant about the trailer hook-up but I'm not paying for their enlightenment.
What's the scoop on this install? Am I really looking at a $165 harness PLUS cutting and splicing?
Where can I find information on this?
Thanks for any advice!
John

You do need it and installing looks like it would suck to do.
The list price is $155 but check out this forum sponsor

If you know how to splice you could on your own cut into your tail light wiring and not get this harness. It goes all the way up to the fuse box in the engine compartment.
DevssrT 10-15-2008, 01:24 PM WOW....thats alot....are you installing a hitch or just want your rear fogs to blink/act as brake lights?

Thanks guys.
Already mounted a Curt hitch last week. I am a terrible splicer but I know someone who specializes in trailer work. Only want to do it because we may be moving in the near future. Maybe I will just borrow a truck AND a trailer. :)
T-Time 10-15-2008, 03:36 PM I've had it done.
It's not worth it. The rear fogs are way brighter than your tail lights. Looks stupid imo. I tried every light bulb in the book, I tried painting the bulb darker and black permanent markers. But then the bulbs would get so F*cking Hot!!!
I ended up melting the housings that the bulbs fit into.
It's great in theory...

Dougsrt8 10-17-2008, 08:38 AM I purchased the "Kit" from Jeep for around $140 and installed it myself.
It took about an hour and does not require "splicing".
It come with a variety of connectors and relays, and connects into several different places at the front relay/fuse panel.
The instructions are available on-line if you want to look at it.
You do need to take it to a dealership after installation for Starscan initialization.
