: Engine Knock Part 3
Marshallout 12-20-2006, 03:59 PM Well they thought it was the lifters and guess what....they were wrong bottom end knocking like i told them from the beginning ....and not bad gas.
Now they still want to take the engine further down to find the problem ...meanwhile i am making my first payment and have been out of the truck for just under 2 wks.
Went to the dealer for help and try to get into another truck because i feel its a lemon . Yes they do make bad motors and sometimes things go wrong this i understand.
Customer Service is none existing and they all refer me to the Florida lemon law.
I go to the dealer for help and they side step me and point me right to the DCX manufacturer.
So this is my Xmas present for dropping a good down payment and then being side stepped by the dealer.
Central Florida Chrysler dealer has been dodging me about help.
jlandbl 12-20-2006, 04:21 PM Sorry to hear about this. Try this SRT specialist at DCX: Mike Fairo @ (248)9447219. He is awesome and helpful.
This is a long shot, but have you talked w/any other local Jeep dealers to see if they'd help w/this? It's possible some dealers may actually want a repeat customer so they may help you w/your current issue. A side note, it's not just DCX either I could go on about other brands doing the same thing, I have a friend w/a business who likes GM's he has had heads pulled & only certain valves replaced 6month old truck & a tranny on a week old truck. I would have demanded a new vehicle. JMO.
Marshallout 12-21-2006, 02:00 PM Got a call today from the dealer and they have a new motor on the way, they will install it maybe Wed of next wk.
But they are not sending a assembled motor but a block and heads.
They will transfer all my parts from the other motor....it has me worried i would feel better if they just sent an assembled motor in a crate ready to be installed. I know thats not how it works but would feel better. Now i have to put faith in the master tech who orignally diagnosed the problem.
I have talked to Mike Fairo from DCX a i guess he lite a fire and we are making progress.
Called the dealer and told them to put new parts on and not transfer. They said they will call tech services to ask about all that and get back to me.

They are sending a new short block. This is pretty much the correct action and is much much better then the dealer attempting a rebuild on yours. I know you want a new truck instead and I totally understand that sentinment but it's just not a realistic expectation. The next best thing would be a long block but that rarely seems to happen due to the added material cost even though the labor costs to install do go down. This scenario is similar to what 2002 M3 owners went thru when those engines were experiencing spun rod bearings. Intially a few guys got a new long block, then everyone was getting short blocks, then a TSB came out for the problem and dealers were literally rebuilding motors at the dealership. I know people from all three groups and in the end all were satisfied with the outcome (which was a properly functioning car).
dbrisson 12-29-2006, 07:08 PM Was this a cold start knock? I suffered through LS1 cold start knock for years that was explained as tolerance on the hypereutectic pistons. It never caused any problems yet a few were able to get long and short blocks replaced. This usually ended up causing more problems due to a complicated install then living with a short period knock. The ls1 knock would go away after a few minutes or once the car warmed up. That is why I ask if yours was a constant bottom end rod knock or mainly a cold start knock.
SRTJeep 12-30-2006, 12:43 AM Man, I Feel your Pain! Sorry to hear any bad luck stories like this. I know a complete engine can be gotten as my source knows of at least 6 engines sold as a complete one. (oil pan to intake, complete with headers, spark plugs, throttle body etc.) That is what you should insist should happen not just a short block. The Lemon law should be the last resort. BBB is another choice as I once filed a complaint on a GM Dealership on another car. You should also insist on a free loaner car to use while your's is being repaired. Just some other ideas and Good Luck. Gene
Marshallout 12-30-2006, 07:08 AM Thanks for the info guys.....'
I'll give you a heads up they still have the truck and i have argued with them telling them i want a long block installed and not pieced together at the dealer. They tell me there is a 3 wk back up on the motor to be sent out like that. I say bull so i called another dealer and asked how long it would be to get a long block and they called me 2 days later and said they could have one in a wk. So needles to say i went to the dealer and put both in touch with each other and all the sudden no they can't get it........like its a crime to get me in my truck. So they except the truck to be done by next Thursday. I will keep you all posted on my SRT-LEMON:(

Well atleast I can say no it's not a big conspiricy to keep you out of your gc,
because chrysler doesn't make a long block 6.1l yet. It's only available in short block form.

You beat me to it with the info. I was just at my (steal)ership for some service. The manager is a cool guy to shoot the breeze with. I mentioned the problem Marshallout was having hoping to see if he could shed some light or help (as the local DCX rep visits often and is pretty knowledgeable). He told me that only a shortblock is offered for repairs. Sorry to break it to you, but there is no conspiracy as mentioned above. Good luck and here's hoping your GC is back on the road ASAP.
mike123 01-01-2007, 11:50 AM I have a 2007 mine has an engine knock @ first start up on cold mornings it goes away after a minute or so the dealer said it was normal

I don't believe an engine knock at anytime is "normal" for the 6.1L.
JeepSRT 01-04-2007, 07:16 PM My 2003 Hemi Dodge had a slight knock on startup that went away after a few seconds. 30000 miles and never had an issue with it.

Different engine, the '03 5.7L does have a "tick". There may be a TSB for this. I believe it's in the upper engine on the 5.7, like a lifter. My father & brother both have '03 Rams that make the occassional "tick".
