Sorry for the newbie question, but my car is currently in for its 15K mile service as we speak and they're claiming that it's gonna cost $400 bones to change the air filter and drain and refill the front and rear axles (I get the synthetic oil changes for free). Is this right???

The filter you can do yourself for $35 dollars or less. Seems high for the fluid change but I haven't had it done.

Thanks - I really appreciate it. I'm outta town so my poor g/f is sitting at the dealership waiting for me to tell her what to do. I just called down there and they said it is $375 to change the diff fluid. Seems pricey but they also said that they actually take the diff covers off and clean out inside rather than doing a "suck and fill". I saw a movie once where a girl did something called that and it didn't look good so I guess I pay the extra! Haha. :D

That still seems like a lot. How many hours are they quoting?

it seems about right

They didn't quote me any hours. Just said it was a fixed rate.

Nothing is fixed. Find out how many hours.

That is right. 15K, 30K, 45K, etc are all very expensive services. All fluids, differential, tranny, oil, all that stuff. They are fixed rates too if you are going with the 5,000 mile service plan, which is what I go with.

it took me 2 hours to change the front & rear diff fluids, without removing the covers. that's with a jack and four jack stands, would have been 2x as fast w/ a lift - and i'm not a professional mechanic. you're getting overcharged.

Thats the thing, the techs are removing the covers, doing a complete flush and cleaning of the system, and then refilling the fluid, which is a pain in the ass to check the level of too, because we don't have a dipstick...gay!!

It is getting done at a dealership, so most everyone will tell you they are ripping you off, but you will get that price at almost any dealership you go to. If you want it cheaper, do it yourself.

Seems like 3 hours in labor and the rest in parts/oil. Or is the oil more expensive?

i think the oil is expensive

Synthetic is expensive, a typical oil change at the stealership runs around $100.

royal purple in the front & rear diffs and the mopar nv146 fluid in the xfer case.

it would take extra time to remove the covers and wash off inside, that's for sure. however, checking the fluid levels in the front & rear diffs is not an issue: you simply fill to the bottom of the fill hole. you're thinking of the xfer case.

Yep, you are right on that one.....but they do that to at that service!

if the OP's $400 quote includes the xfer case fluid change then it seems more reasonable. two quarts of the nv146 fluid alone will run almost 100 bucks.

I'm converting to ASMOIL for all fluids when I get home.

If it were me, I would just wait and do it myself, save some money. I won't hurt to put my miles on that diff fluid.

Get pics of the covers off of the front and rear diffs. I've never heard of anyone doing that. It would be like dropping the oil pan to change the oil. I have been accused of being suspicious, but I'd bet that is not recommended in the service manual...

Yeah, they do the Transfer case as well.

To do it right you do remove the covers. They drain the oil then wipe out the inside of the case to remove any steel shavings or chips that could have come off the gears.Hopefully they do what they say they do.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I haven't been on this forum for a while and forgot just how helpful everyone is on here. I called around and the spread ranged from a "special" of $299 to $450. As I get the synthetic oil for free at this place (and the cost of gas!), I figured I would just have them do it. Probably not the smartest fiscal decision of the month, but made it much easier on my g/f who was dealing with all of this for me... and isn't that what we're here for fellas...haha.
