: So I guess my transmission is dead...?
Mango 10-09-2008, 11:06 AM Well I drove my Jeep to work today since it's a nice day. Had a pleasent drive to work...and everything was terrific. At lunch I decided to head to the local bagel shop for an egg white sammich....well then the fun starts.
I sit in the truck, turn it on, move the gear selector to R to back out of my spot. The truck makes a HORRID grinding noise  I look at the dash, and all of the gears have the [ ] around them, and it SLAMS into reverse!! Then the truck just shuts off!!
I move the gear selector back to N and start the truck. After it's running I move it to P to wait for it to re-engage. Nothing. No gear works. I'm sitting there dead in the water.
I shut down, restart AGAIN. Now it finally moves. So I start to drive it a bit thinking this was some crazy one time fluke....well the truck shuts off AGAIN a about 2 miles from my school...while I'm on a hill....waiting for traffic to move. I pull the Park brake quickly so I don't roll into the car behind me. Go through the whole start/restart procedure to finally get it moving again. After I got to the bagel place I once again had to reverse to get out of my parking spot.
You guessed it, the truck will not select any gears. It sometimes makes that crazy grinding/buzzing sound but no slamming or anything. :( I had to jog back to my school just now and I'm calling my dealer to come get it.
Mods are:
Diablo Tune (91oct CAI canned tune)
BWoody Intake
Borla exhaust
BWoody sway bar links
HID headlights/Fogs from Xenondepot
That's it....so could it just be I have a "bad" tranny??
promo718 10-09-2008, 11:09 AM ....so could it just be I have a "bad" tranny??
i think it's more likely that you have a bad tune. did you reset your pcm to stock before leaving the truck?
Mango 10-09-2008, 11:11 AM Nope, don't have my tuner with me :(
I didn't call the dealer yet, I'm going to rush home after school, hop in the .:R with my tuner and reprogram it to stock. THEN call them and wait there for the flatbed.
My concern is, if it won't shift out of gear at all...how are they going to move it??
promo718 10-09-2008, 11:12 AM flatbed it i guess? i'm just glad this didn't happen in the middle of a turn on slippery pavement or something, could have been a lot worse.
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 11:15 AM They can pull it onto a flatbed while in neutral by using a wench which I dont like cause that means they have to attach the cable to something on the jeep, it has to be piggybacked because its AWD do not let them do the old school ass up in the air tow job. This is getting scary with Jeeps randomly cutting off while driving
Mango 10-09-2008, 11:17 AM I really wonder if the Diablo tune caused this?? I've had a tune on it for about a year.
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 11:19 AM Is this similar to what Tamara had happen this week? Glad your okay sucks you had to run to school though
Mango 10-09-2008, 11:21 AM I'm not sure if it's the same as what happened to Tamara. I didn't fully read through her entire thread to see what the resolution was.
I didn't really mind the run back, I'm running the Atlantic City Marathon next week LOL so I enjoyed it haha!
I just hope they cover whatever repairs are needed under warrenty..
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 11:23 AM Of course this happens on Thursday and it will be tomorrow before they MIGHT know anything then comes a 3 day weekend so Tuesday they might be able to order parts, you know where this is going
Mango 10-09-2008, 11:27 AM Yeah I hear ya man....well I am fortunate that I do have other cars to drive LOL
My pops is across the country setting up for the next NBC Sunday Night Football gig so I can drive:
my .:R32
our Z06
his Jeep SRT8
his 67 427/435hp Corvette (actually it's a trailer queen now)
So I kind of have a choice of rides, fortunate in that respect LOL yeah not nobody will feel sorry for me =P
But you know what I mean...this still SUCKS and I am really hoping to find out what is the cause, so all of us can narrow this down.
BILLSHOE 10-09-2008, 11:27 AM Wow another bad story good luck JT hope its an easy fix
millers_srt 10-09-2008, 11:52 AM Sounds like it could be something with the gear select assembly or the TCM because it's "boxing in" all the gears. Mine had a similar problem at about 30K and the shifter assembly was completely replaced with no problems with it since. Mine would go into limp mode though. I didn't have any issues with it not shifting.
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 11:54 AM Miller I thought your engine was recently pulled so was that all the problems
Matt McKenzie 10-09-2008, 11:58 AM Damn JT, I hope this sh!t gets figured out, seems like it has been happening a lot lately!!!
Blown7 10-09-2008, 11:59 AM That's it....so could it just be I have a "bad" tranny??
It's so hard to diagnose over the interent, before you reflash the PCM back to stock and before the dealer tows it. read the DTC's with the Predator.
And give us a rundown when you get a chance.

Sure thing Jeff!!
WBSRT 10-09-2008, 12:36 PM Suck's Mango, How many Miles on that badboy ? How it works out, Im sure it will.
SRT8Girl12 10-09-2008, 01:17 PM Hey JT, your problem seems a bit different than mine. Or maybe yours just got alot worse than mine. Mine did the same slamming into the gears and all that, but it would go into gear atleast. My Jeep WOULD NOT go out of first, so all I had was Reverse and 1st gear. Apparently mine is the silinoids in the tranny. We shall see. That reminds me, I'm going to call the stealership right now and see what's up. Good luck JT, I definitely feel for you!!!
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 01:45 PM Tam I think you posted it was the TCM that went bad
That sucks MB's. Is yours an '07?
1badjeep 10-09-2008, 02:34 PM hey bud,
sorry to hear about your jeep. I read you and Tam's post and my jeep was doing the same things. but then finally just stoped starting up one day. all the problems started at about 30k. My jep was in the shop for about a week and then they called to tell me that they found the problem .
they said that there is some type of computer chip under the plastic around the shifter. and that they have been have a lot of problems with them frying out. they replaced it for free and I have had not one problem since! the manager said the its right under the cup holders and if something spills out that it could fry the board. hope it all works out for you.
CentralTexHemi 10-09-2008, 02:36 PM I think that is where the TCM is located right under the shifter/center console area
Muellge 10-09-2008, 02:52 PM What about the ESM? Had mine replaced in late 2007. Code showing was P0607 ESM internal performance. They "test connections" and (in my case) found failed electronic shifter module. Now since the car exhibited none of the limp or stuck in gear symptoms, I can't say how they determined it was failed, but if you're getting the limp and the [P][R][D]...., this might be it. If warrantable, they replace the unit under the shifter - center console. Part # is 5037751AC, and the code for the Mechanism, gearshift - Replace Console is 21010336. Good luck.
SRT8Girl12 10-09-2008, 03:19 PM I think that is where the TCM is located right under the shifter/center console area
Can anyone confirm this? Because that would be great if it's the same thing they are replacing in mine...i'm just really nervous after I get my car back, because as soon as I get it back, I have to drive back down to So Cal and I don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere again :(
Dr.Steve 10-09-2008, 03:25 PM weak JT, hope she gets diagnosed and fixed quickly bro!

Thats what Andy told me Tam but now that I think about it someone else said it was under the dash area-heck IDK
SRT8Girl12 10-09-2008, 03:30 PM Thats what Andy told me Tam
Ok cool, then I should be ok, I think :(
DevssrT 10-09-2008, 03:34 PM Damn Mango this sux...sorry to hear...this has been happenning alot latley- I was on a hill just yesterday and all the boxes appeared around the gear shifters and it felt like the tranny wouldnt engage- really strange- then 4 seconds later as if nothing happened she ran fine.
Mango 10-09-2008, 06:14 PM Well my dealer was really great about the whole thing. I scanned for codes with both my Dashawk and my Predator and neither found any codes.
My dealer told me they would get their top tech to look at the truck first thing tomorrow morning and they'd give me an update. I will let you guys know exactly what they trace it to be when I hear something.
Harrison@Stage6 10-09-2008, 06:21 PM It's so hard to diagnose over the interent, before you reflash the PCM back to stock and before the dealer tows it. read the DTC's with the Predator.

Hey Jeff..... will the Pred. read the TCM codes? Comparing apples to oranges here but, in my Ford diesel only the Ford handhelds would read the TCM codes. I guess CryCo is different? My SCT and BullyDog Outlook Monitor wouldn't produce squat for codes. My buddy borrowed the Ford Dealers Palm Pilot reader and boom, there they were. Crazy how different manufacturers do different chit.
Muellge 10-09-2008, 06:35 PM I doubt we can read these codes with our predators, at least for now. Codes will tell. Good luck getting it fixed.
Vinnysrt8 10-09-2008, 08:18 PM hope it gets fixed soon
HoustonSRT-8 10-09-2008, 10:01 PM Wow, that sucks. I hope it isn't something huge.
Mango 10-10-2008, 08:12 AM I just called my dealer to tell them about my steering wheel that's peeling, and the service writer told me the technician is sending my TCM data to chrysler for review. :( They don't have an answer, but can Chrysler tell that I've used a programmer if they look at that data?
:( :(
Also, he asked me "So what is that thing you have plugged into the OBDII port?" and I told him thats my Dashawk, it allows me to see what's going on with the car. He just said "hmm ok"
Why the heck would he be asking ab out that all suspicious?? Now I'm really confused.

That would make me a little worried.
Matt McKenzie 10-10-2008, 08:17 AM Oh damn, that doesn't sound too good JT. If they are worried about your dashawk, they might do some snooping to see if you have relashed your CPU, then no warranty! I really hope this isn't the case bro!!!! Good luck with it all!

if i remember right, the most they'll be able to determine is the last day & time that the pcm was flashed. if you can't document a dealer visit at that time, i'd be somewhat worried.
Mango 10-10-2008, 08:23 AM What the hell......
I hate this truck.

I'm just going to sell the damn thing and stick to VW's again, I swear.

with your light mods, does it really make sense to run an aftermarket tune? if you have heads/cam or fi a tune is mandatory, but with light bolt-ons? i feel that's a move with negative ev.
then again this may turn out to not be tune related at all.
Matt McKenzie 10-10-2008, 08:29 AM I hate this truck.

No you don't, remember the last time you got rid of one, you bought another one!!!
CentralTexHemi 10-10-2008, 09:52 AM Also THEY have to PROVE your mods (again if they can prove you have any) caused the said problem stick to your guns. If they say the Dashhawk caused any problems make a call to Dashhawk and I'm sure they will defend you and promplty educate the service dept on all the dashhawk does

Yeah you're right, it's just frustrating. Maybe I'll just skip the tune then, or just order Andy's tune. That seems to be the most bulletproof option.
I'm just mad!!! grrrr :mad::mad:

Crookster777 10-10-2008, 10:39 AM "Dashhawk caused the problem" If they say that JT please get the tire iron out the back and hit them over the skull with it. What *******s dealers are.
Matt McKenzie 10-10-2008, 11:10 AM They won't say that the Dashawk caused the problem, but because they don't know what it is, they might investigate the CPU and see that it was retuned...then there would be the issue!
Mango 10-10-2008, 11:12 AM I'm just going to hire Matt to drive down here and chew them out at the service desk. They'll fix it up good as new after he's done with them.
Mango 10-10-2008, 11:17 AM Here comes that 5 star free tire rotation!!!!
LMAO!! I swear to god, if they try to rotate my tires I'm going to burn that place down.

CentralTexHemi 10-10-2008, 12:36 PM LMAO!! I swear to god, if they try to rotate my tires I'm going to burn that place down.
I just called your dealership and pretended to be you and told them to go ahead and do the rotate and courtesy 6qt oil change:D
henniab 10-10-2008, 01:33 PM My Jeep had a similar problem but it turned out to be the connection/controls under the shift lever not the tranny. Have your Dealer check the auto trans linkage/solenoids or whatever connects the lever to the Tranny. I had the same []in my dash cluster and same issues with going into gear or doing nothing.
Mango 10-10-2008, 02:27 PM Ok I just picked up my truck!!! Turns out, they replaced my TCM and it has the latest flash, Chryslers official answer was the following:
"Disconnect external device from OBDII port."
Meaning, do not plug the Dashawk into the OBDII port, it was the cause of the problem. Now, I laughed out loud when they told me this. However, get this...
I'm standing there with the Service Writer about 30 minutes ago at my dealership, my truck was idling next to me. I plugged the dashawk back in to my truck while chatting with the guy, and while I'm standing there saying to him "Well I've had this Dashawk on both trucks now for over a year..."
Then my truck just shut off.
I unplugged the dashawk in disbelief. Started the truck and it ran fine.
I guess my Dashawk is defective? Could it be sending some kind of sine wave through the port? I've since taken it out of the truck and it runs fine!
promo718 10-10-2008, 02:32 PM something must have changed. try re-writing the dh firmware. if that doesn't help, try using your dad's cable and see if u can reproduce the problem (bad cable?). definitely an unexpected outcome.

promo718 10-10-2008, 03:06 PM Whoa!!! I never would have believed it......
i still don't, there's gotta be more to it.
Mango 10-10-2008, 03:09 PM i still don't, there's gotta be more to it.
I agree!!!! It must be either:
A.) bad cable as you said
B.) bad OBDII connector on the truck?!?
C.) bad Dashawk unit
Weird thing is, they drove it around with a StarScan plugged in and it didn't do anything. So that leaves me to believe the Dashawk is wacky, or the cable like you said.
I'm going to drive it around with my Dads dashawk plugged in to see what happens.
The funny thing is, they think the dashawk caused my TCM to go wacky....which I find impossible.
But still, WHY did it shut off 10 seconds after I plugged the dashawk in??!
Crookster777 10-10-2008, 03:11 PM I am surprised they didnt make you pay for the TCM if they say the dashhawk caused it.
Mango 10-10-2008, 03:22 PM I am surpised they didnt make you pay for the TCM if they say the dashhawk caused it.
Yo me too!! They "replaced" it, or so they say, AND they are replacing my peeling steering wheel! :D
Who knows, I might get a bill in the mail lol

I'm glad you guys are starting to realize that alot of the Can Bus stuff ain't as easy as some aftermarket companies lead you to believe.
It takes alot to manipulate/capture data on the bus, and modify tunes without any hiccups.
All it takes is one module to miss a Can Bus communication packet and alot of logic in the modules are set to default to not damage the vehicle further whether it's a real problem or not.
