When driving with TC OFF, (light illuminated) I now hear a distinct high-pitched hum and whir-whir-whir-whir sound coming from directly under the vehicle. Most noticed above 30mph. Louder with acceleration. Very noticable by others in the SRT also. I turn TC back ON (no light) and both sounds go away about 2-3 seconds after pressing the TC button. Does anyone else notice this? Is this normal? 8.6K miles at this point.

Thanks!

It is comforting that it is normal but what is making the sound?

Normal....mine does the same. It is worse with the fuse pulled or the traction control completly disabled.

I dont think this is normal , my srt only recently started making this noise and i have 22 000 km on it, and i wasnt being gentle for much of those 22 000.

That noise you are hearing is your Transfere Case Clutch packs. The packs are not sure what they should be doing so instead of one engaging and the other disengaging, you are hearing both of them turning at the same time. There is a TSB for that noise (i have an 06 and i got the computer flashed, things for 07 will work, but not sure 08's). Mine was really bad under hard acceleration but was gone after that TC flash. I still have a whine from about 40mph to 70mph. Once past that it goes away. I ALSOOOO have a brand new TC (only about 800 miles on it) and it makes the noise. Heard its normal, even thoguht i'mnot a fan of it!!! I now have a Borla S, so kinda drounes the sound! hope this helps!

Why do you drive with the TC off? Just wondering?

The only time I take it off is if I'm launching the Jeep.

Turning it off to make runs will fry it. Do not use it unless you need to. This really needs to be passed on/stessed. I don't know how many "white-knuckled, a/c off, autostick in 1, loaded at 2000 rpms and TC off" I have read on this site. These things are time bombs and cannot handle the stress. Certainly an engineering issue, but what can you do?

so if using the "button" can fry our TC then how is this different from disabling as much of the TC we can via a tune? is the second clutch pack disabled via the tuning where it isn't via the "button"? i don't see how there could be a difference??? and if using the button is essentially the same as removing as much of the Traction Control as possible via a tune, then isn't using a tune just as bad for our TC as using the button? hmm

yea really...Seems like since I have been tuned my TC has starting to shows signs and it has gotten worse. that sucks. better load my stock tune when I go in

my jeep has started this recently aswell, either that or i just never noticed because the music and my B&B exhaust is too loud. I dont know if it snows where you live 1BAMFR but its slippery as hell where i live and driving with the tc on is more dangerous than with it off, my jeeps all over the road with it on going up hill as it tries to compensate for icy roads

I noticed this on mine during my long road trip last September. That's also when I noticed my original run craps in the front balding on outside/inside left/right both tires. I took mine in to have it looked at the tech tells me that the tires in the front are not the same type as the back tires and I should be lucky I didn't blow the transfer case. (I had to replace the fronts and stayed away from the Eagle run craps).

I started noticing the sound intermittently and finally determined it was whenever the transfer kicked in and I could replicate the sound by engaging/disengaging the transfer with the tc button.

I also realized that this auto tc is engaging/disengaging a lot!! It happens at wot, cornering and whenever more than 3 flies hit the windshield! And I'm almost certain this is part of the cause of the rapid wearing on the inside and outside of the front tires.

Never had the beast in the snow.......only had it in rain 3 times now:)

i envy you... its currently minus 25 here right now. balding on inside and outside of tires is usually caused by under inflation. and when you say tc kicking in and out it shouldnt kick in atall on dry pavement unless ur hammerin on the throttle off the line or commin around a corner wide open. unless ive mistaken tc for traction control instead of transfer case? if so the transfer case is always somewhat active its a fluid coupling

My High Torque capacity Transfer Case LIKES the TC off.:)

replacing the TCase fluid made mine stop whinning. It didn't whine when i bought the jeep, only after the first fluid change. did the change myself this last time and was only able to fill one quart with the old oil. those azz hats didn't put the correct amount in.

Yeah these threads that use the abbreviation TC are very confusing, i can never tell if we are talking Traction Control, Transfer Case, or Torque Converter. HAHA

Its Normal...take it to the dealer and they might figure out otherwise, but as for driving with t/c off, should be a snow or launch-only thing...
