: Tail Pipes/Trailer Hitch - Blasphemy?

Okay guys, I'm a newbie here and haven't bought a GC SRT8 yet, but I have one in my garage right now on loan from my local dealer and have had a blast with it all weekend (dealer is a friend of mine).

I know this may be blasphemous, but I want a 2" receiver hitch and wouldn't mind hiding the exhaust tips. To be completely honest, I would like a quieter exhaust, but don't want to buy a new one when I buy the car.

That being said, has anyone seen or completed a mod of cutting off the curved pipes that route the tips to the center of the bumper and then reuse some of the curved piping and reweld the tips at an angle towards the ground? (Have I been watching too much American Chopper?) I realize that you would no longer see the exhaust tips, but I'm okay with that.

If I had this done (which I don't think is a big deal for an experienced welder), could I then install a factory 2" receiver in the opening? I know the bumper is different from a non SRT8 GC, but I'm not sure if the opening has the same spacing and whether the hitch will just bolt on or not.

Lastly, if anyone has any suggestions on where to get new wheels, please let me know. Thanks.

you could get the Reese hitch kit for the regular Grand Cherokee, like this guy did (SRT8inOZ is his username). i think any competent muffler shop could cut the piping (like where it exits the mufflers) and install a turn-down style tip

http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=680&d=1166022552

you could also create something like what TXBLU did, which is a 2" receiver BEHIND the stock bumper and he made a plug to cover it when not in use.

Our exhaust is soo sweet looking. Never in a million years would I touch it. I like what TXBLU did.

I also like the look the center exit exhaust but I'm beginning to warm up to the idea of a side exit system with a class 3 receiver in the center. The reason I'm not loving the function of the center exit is in certain weather conditions if creates alot of condensation on the rear window while driving. Enough that you must use the rear wiper to clear it.

I think a turn down would make the exhaust louder???

Since the pipes are already curved back there I don't think by shortening the run to the exit and having them turned down will do anything to the sound. Not tested, but that's my opinion. All I would be doing is shortening the length from the muffler to the tip using the existing "plumbing".

Interesting comment on the condensation. I noticed i was clearing the window this morning on my first morning drive in to work. Slight rain and damp temperature, but wasn't understanding why I needed to clear the rear window with the wiper. Not that it changes my mind about how sweet the center exhaust looks.

I think aiming them at the street will make them louder regardless of pipe length. Think of it like the exhaust exit is subwoofer. Straight out the back is like playing a subwoofer in your backyard with not much around to create pressure on one side of the woofer. Turning it downward so it's 12-18" off the ground changes it to act more like it's in a smaller space (and sounds reflect off of pavement). Every time I've heard a turn down it's been MUCH louder then an equivalent system not turned down.

i don't see why you're offended since the SRT8 has a 3500lb tow rating. everybody who has fabricated their own hitch has said what a breeze it is to tow with the 6.1L and the Brembos. i know when i get mine i intend 100% to get a hitch and use it for towing my DJ company's trailer

The funny part about all the talk about the looks is just a joke to me. I really don't want it to look bad but I for one bought the jeep was for the utility. If looks were the first thing why not buy a charger 300 or magnum. I get very tired of the whining that this or that messes up the look. I bought it for what it will do not the look. I also think it is lame for the few that say that they have to park it when it snows. If you can't use a car because you might mess something up then it is not worth having. I for one do not have the money to buy one and park it because it will be worth more 30 years from now. I also have a Pt cruiser that I have dressed up Sea mist green high output turbo less than 150 made but I will drive it as well or no point in having either. It is at about 280 hp and out handles the jeep with mods

If you bought the SRT-8 Jeep for utility purposes, then you bought it for the wrong reason.

Utility but my hot rod as well, eveything is a compramise(sp), just depends on which end of things you want to be on

I was going to say, the number one reason for buying an SRT-8 should be performance.

This guy has a modded PT cruiser?? WTF?? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. And to say it out handles the SRT8?? Dumb..

YOU ARE JUST DUMB DUDE!!!
First of all there is not a single PT Cruiser out there that could "out handle" the Jeep SRT 8, and second of all no matter how much horsepower or "cool shiz" you put on a PT Cruiser, its still just a POS PT Cruiser and totally G A Y

The GCSRT8 is better for "utility" than the modded PT, I assume ;)

This is exactly the dumb comment I have come to expect from this group.Well maybe not all, that is not fair statement but most. The Jeep and the Pt are two different concepts, but I assure you that it will out handle your Jeep. It is not as fast almost can't be front wheel just does not compare to all wheel and that is why the Jeep. The only one dumber than me is you.

Seriously dude, I dont do the name calling, and I dont do the internet argument thing. But I had a PT cruiser rental for quite some time after my accident that made me have to get a new car. I think you are totally wrong. I drove the cruiser alot and the roads I drove to work were back roads with lots of curves. There is absolutely no way on God's green earth that you are going to get the cruiser to handle even remotely close to that of the Jeep SRT8.....I have done some hair raising, butt cheek clenching corners with the jeep. The cruiser would have had me getting peeled off of a light pole in pieces by EMT's.

Theres just no way in hell you could even compare the two.

Well maybe if you mounted the pt body on the jeep.....

And the people here have been great!!! I dont know why you would speak bad about them.I would say 90 percent are cool here.....

Not like other forums I have been to.

Well sorry that I don't agree with proper set up, even a cruiser handles better than the Jeep, got both, drive both. It will never keep up with a srt8, but unless we improve the Jeep also, around corners I can take you. The Pt is not stock Pt by any means. Also the 10% can ruin it for the 90%

You must have rails on it then...I thought that the pt was aweful. I hated it and finally turned it in for another car.

I give you this challenge...

Drive the PT in the snow and ice....then the Jeep.

Now drive the pt in the mountains....then the jeep....

Im talking some Speedracer stuff too...

I would much rather be in the jeep....

Also, Since my last vehicle was totalled due to me being Tboned in an intersection.....Try getting PLOWED INTO by a Ford expedition going about 35 mph through a stoplight.....I would much rather be in the jeep for safety, but in the PT because They are a dime a dozen.

I would give you the recommendation to drive the PT daily and save miles on the much more expensive and exclusive Jeep SRT.

The PT is in no way shape or form a hotrod. The jeep on the other hand is a serious hotrod....IMO Hotrods have a feeling of being a rebel......I would not feel too REBEL-ISH driving a PT cruiser....

And that is why I bought the Jeep The pt is no fun in bad weather. You are right about traction turbo spools up tires spin not near as much fun as the Jeep. I did not say the pt is superior other than with mods handles better. No way it can stay with the Jeep but still fun in a different way. What I would do to the pt I would no way do to the Jeep. I have made the pt shine that would not work on the Jeep. I think I am going to make the jeep handle better biger sway bars and links see what happens.
