It's almost time for my first oil change on my used jeep. I don't really have the time or tools to do it myself. So I'm going to have it done someplace.
Is it benificial to get the oil changed at the dealership instead of a local shop. Because the dealership reports the service to Carfax? Does that help the resale value when/if you decide to sell it?
Does the dealership do anything extra that a local service station wouldn't on our jeeps? And should I try and find a dealership who has a certified SRT tech?
Thanks for any information
Tony
Buy the oil and filter yourself and bring it to the dealer. Should cost you $20 or less but you have a receipt for warranty purposes.

yeah, you can def save on parts atleast if you buy your own oil and filter. Mobil 1 0W40 full synthetic is recommended.

The big benefit to having the dealer do routine maintenance things like that is to maintain a service record. If your motor blows up after 20k miles, you have a record that oil was changed at recommended intervals to substantiate your warranty claim for a $5k replacement motor.
You can always just keep your receipts if you have it done at some other shop, the dealer is just more convenient.
I suppose it also might help with resale value on down the road, since the dealer keeps such a detailed record of everything service on the car, you could always print that out as part of your documentation when you sell it.
Personally I just do my oil changes in the driveway, I put the receipts in a plastic baggie in the glove compartment and fill out the date & mileage in the back of the manual.
+1 on buying your own oil/filter the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg for these!

Never thought about doing oil changes this way. I wonder if they get pissed. I just think its like bringing your own food to a resturant and asking them to cook it for you.
Anyone else bring their own oil/filter to the dealership?

If you do decide to purchase the oil and filter yourself and either change it yourself or bring to the dealer - Autozone and Advance Auto Parts are having a sale going on now. 5 qts of the Mobil 1 0w40 (for our Jeeps) and the Mobil 1 M1-204 oil filter for $30.00. That is a VERY GOOD DEAL!
Just an FYI - You need 7 qts of oil for our Jeeps.

Can't say I've tried it with my current dealer but I've done the same many places before and never had any trouble. I've always been picky about what brand of fluid I use in trannies, xfer cases, diffs, etc. and buy my own stuff and bring to whatever shop is doing the work all the time.
I'd rather just give them the stuff I want rather than ask for it and never really know if they actually used it or just grabbed their generic white-label $hit they keep in the back.

I'm sure the parts dept. doesn't like it, but labor is labor. I have done it at my Ford dealer and my Jeep dealer.

I bring my own oil in for my Jeep and my Wife's BMW, they have no problem with it at all, and it saves at least 20.00.
