: Serious Oil Leak

Picked up my new Jeep late one evening this past week after waiting patiently for about 2 months. Had 10 miles showing, put another 12 on going home, all local driving. Weather got lousy so it has been sitting in the garage until today. I had to make a 150 mile round trip and was anxiously looking forward to putting on some miles and getting familiar with my new toy. After about 5 miles of roads in town, I got on the highway and jumped on it pretty good. Almost immediately I smelled hot oil. Running about 90, I looked in the mirrors and was trailing a plume of blue smoke aprox 200 yards long. I looked like DW after he "done blowed the ***** up"! Stopping asap, I could see oil sprayed on both sides of the car and on the hatch. Looking underneath revealed oil on the head pipes, dripping off of the cats. Everything is dry under the hood so I can't really tell where it is coming from. It's going back to the dealer on Monday with a total of 34 miles, but I wondered if anyone else has had or heard about this problem. Also, under hard acceleration, I felt a strong vibration in the steering wheel and in the seat. Sound normal? Thanks!

I got on mine good on the highway within the first 100 miles as well. I was actually racing my buddy in his F430, anyways it was the first time I had it up above 70 mph, and it was well above, somewhere around 130 or 140 mph. I had the same smell and the same smoke out the back, got nervous and let off the gas, kept driving another 20 miles to my destination, and it never happened again. I just chalked it up to the first time the truck had run that hot, but I didn't have any leaks that I saw, but I never really got under the truck to check. Good luck with yours, hopefully it is nothing serious.

Dude that definitely does not sound normal! I got a little bit of a smell as the engine broke in but nothing like what you just described. You should be able to romp on that thing right out of the dealers parking lot with no problems so don't blame yourself or your driving. It almost sounds like you threw a rod but if you did that I don't think you'd be driving it to the dealership. The vibration is strange but I don't see how it could have anything to do with the oil spray. The dealer is supposed to check all of your fluid levels before it leaves the lot, maybe they didn't check or they did and screwed something up! Man I'm really sorry to hear this. :( Please keep us informed as to what you find out.

Wow, very unusual. The dealer will fix it up for you I'm sure. Sorry to hear about that. :(

I have never had any smoke from mine, I don't think anything should be burning off, it should definitely be checked out.

The smoke sounds like it just the leaking oil burning on the exhaust and engine. The bigger issue is whether or not the leak caused any damage due to lack of lubrication. I would make sure the engine is checked 100% after the leak is repaired. Hopefully it's something simple like a oil filter that isn't tight.

I didn't mean to imply that two problems are related, I don't think they are. I've got good oil pressure, the oil is just leaking out somewhere. The vibration seems to be elsewhere in the drivetrain. I just wondered if anyone else is experiencing a vibration under heavy acceleration. Thanks for the replies.

Yikes sorry to hear about this. I had a slight burning smell like jms935 but it never went any further. I've certainly had it up at high speeds but neer get more than a slight odor.
keep us informed

Hey Rick I got to thinking about your vibrtation and I remembered a similar problem with my wife's Ram. I had a bad vibration from about 90 mph and up. I took it in twice and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. I told them it only happened at high speeds and they said they couldn't drive it that fast to diagnose the problem. Took it in about two months later to have the brakes checked and the tech discovered a loose tie rod. They replaced the coupling I think and the problem went away. I had the vibration from the day I picked it up with only 13 miles on it until they found it at around 15K so it left the factory that way. You might want to have them poke around your front suspension and steering linkage while you have it in. Also have them check engine mounts since you indicated the problem occurs under heavy acceleration. Hope this helps you out.

Well it turns out that both of my problems were related only it wasn't oil that was leaking. A front CV joint was defective and grease was being thrown out onto the hot exhaust. After a three day stay at the dealer waiting for parts, the Jeep is now running fine. I'm gald it wasn't anything worse!

No break-in period? I wouldn't do that.

Seriously, that should have been found during the new car check over.
