: Rattle from rear of vehicle.
TXBLU 12-09-2006, 10:27 AM Ok, I've heard a few comments on a specific "clunk" that seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle, and that it has something to do with an ABS or transfer case self-test. I have experienced that, but I have another issue that's driving me bonkers!
At slow speeds, light throttle (not sure about heavy throttle), and over rough pavement, there is a definate rattle from the rear of the vehicle. At first I thought it was the rear sub-frame, then maybe the plug in my new hitch receiver. It is neither. Has anyone else had this and found what it is? I'm wondering if it might be a loose wiring harness in the lift-gate. I know there are inaccessible compartments in the rear side structure, and wonder if some idiot at the factory tossed a bolt or something in there prior to welding it all up. I have heard of that sort of thing before.
Any help would be greatlt appreciated.
Guero 12-09-2006, 05:37 PM I have a dull solid rattle from the right rear. This is on rough roads at slow to moderate speed. I wish I could tell you what it is. The problem is all the roads around my dealer are so smooth that it won't happen. Unfortunately the area this happens in, is too far from the dealer where a technician could go with me. So unfortunately, knowing that another here has a rattle as well is about all I can offer. If anything changes or I can pinpoint it better, I will let you know.
TXBLU 12-16-2006, 10:59 AM After disassembling and examining everything under the rear bumper cover, I found a few things that were causing rattles in my SRT.
Both left and right side rear inner fender liners were held on with cheesy plastic rivits and friction pins. These fasteners cannot maintain tension, and when they loosen, allow the liners to flex. The left side liner also has an extension at the inboard rear corner to help protect the fuel vapor recovery cannister from damage. This extension is not supported and allows the liner to flex more than it would otherwise, loosening the fasteners even more.
To fix this problem, I instsalled nut plates on aluminum doublers where the liners attach to the bumper cap wheel well lip. I then used 10-32 countersunk screws and countersunk washers to attach the liners to the bumper cap. At the inboard side of the wheel wells, I used nut plates on the two mount tabs and again attached the liner to the wheel well with countersunk screws and countersunk skin washers. Finally, I made a bracket to secure the inner rear corner of the left side liner. This bracket attaches to one of the vapor recoery cannister mount studs, and has two nut plates to secure the liner to it.

I then discovered that the rear bumper fog lights (converted to running/stop/turn lights) were loose in their mounts. To fix that, I just wrapped some electrical tape aroung the tabs on the bumper, and inserted the tabs on the light housings into the bumper tab through the tape.
No more rattles.

jlandbl 12-17-2006, 07:53 AM WOW, this is great info and very helpful. I do not have any rattles (8K miles and counting). If they appear, I will refer to this thread. Great job.
Rob Dance 12-21-2006, 02:40 AM I guess this is the price one pays for a lighter vehicle.
When re-assembling the back end after fitting a tow bar I used some additional plastic cable ties to hold the various sections together, managed to stop the rattles and squeeks.
TXBLU 12-21-2006, 04:47 AM Oh, yeah! Gotta use plenty of zip-ties!!!!!
justyli 12-21-2006, 10:22 AM Has anyone else had this and found what it is?
I have a irritating rumbling noise from rear end too. It sounds like a clattering tailgate.
My dealer said it must be a problem with the rear bilstein shocks.
But he was not be able to fix it in 4 repair attempts.
They will try again 5th time in january
TXBLU 12-22-2006, 07:44 AM Rear shocks, eh? I wonder if the little dust boots are rattling. Otherwise, I don't see what could be the problem there. I ran Bilsteins on my Lightning and never had a problem with them. I do get noise from the seat belt buckles rattling against the interior trim...

Searching for the problem the dealer mounted normal wk 4.7L rear shocks to my car and the rumbling sound was gone.
But after changing again with the billsteins it's still rumbling from the back.
That's why he said, it must be or because of the rear bilsteins.

Maybe it's not the Bilsteins that are the problem but the Bilsteins dampening level (stiffer then other OEM tried) is one of the factors involved in creating a situation where you have this noise from elsewhere. Actually, I'm 99% sure this is the case since you've tried so many sets of Bilsteins and then a wildly different damper. The dealer needs to figure out what is really making the noise, not just one of the factors that causes it (does that make any sense). This will not be easy.

Same here,
have to stop and tuck the belts behind the rear seats, or turn the stereo up on shorter journies !!
Also, the top ( adjustable) seat belt mounts can make an iritating rattle if they are in the highest position ( noticed the same on a P T Cruiser loan car I had, so must be the fitment design) drop the position down one notch seems to stop it !
idealrides 12-26-2006, 10:10 PM TXBLU, is it possible to remove the rear fog lights without removing the bumper cover?

Absolutely!!! There is just a single screw at the inboard end of the housing. You should be able to get to it easily.
Acaoogle 10-02-2007, 07:13 PM Like many of you, I have a definite rattle coming from the back of my 2007 srt8. At first I thought it was a loose tailpipe, but the dealer checked it out and couldn't find anything. It happens when I am decelerating at moderate speeds, like between stoplights. It's driving me crazy. Othe than that I have no complaints about the vehicle. Is anyone else experiencing the exact problem. If so let me know what you have done to get it fixed, if anything. it sounds like the upside down "L" bracket that goes through the rubber hanger is rubbing or rattling up against the rear bumber frame.
I found two possible rattles/noises on mine(dealer fixed under warranty after I had to find the issue).

Acaoogle 10-15-2007, 09:19 PM Thanks for the heads up. Is it somehting I can fix?
parkstephen 10-17-2007, 03:14 PM I have no real rattles. but definately a CREAKING coming from the rear passenger side. Any body movement or body flex makes it happen. It's at the dealer for the 3rd time...day three this time.
They have removed the seats and everything this time...can't find it. Saying they might send it to a body shop as they cannot find the source...
The second time they replaced the rear control arm and bushings...went a way and now it's back.
Anybody else find a fix for the CREAK?
thx
