ResumeSpeed 09-13-2008, 06:45 PM I sent the seller an email, here is the reply:
Hello there,
I am glad to hear that you are interested to buy my 2008 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT-8. Although I am registered in US, but I recently moved in Portugal (where my family is from) and the car is being shipped from here. The car is in a perfect cosmetic and engine conditions, and meticulously maintained. No damage, no scratches or dents, no hidden defects, the engine doesn't smoke, runs and sounds awesome, the engine has never been repaired or something like that, never been into accidents and it is as advertised. I bought this car from US but when i tried to register it here in Portugal they said that i can't register it because it's an US vehicle and we have to do serious engine modifications in order to comply with the EU emission standards. As I said before, it is an US model (which complies with the american emission standards) and Europe regulations are different, also the fees to register it here in Portugal would be around 15800 euros.I want to sell it in US because the car is still registered there. The price is low because here in Portugal nobody wants to buy it and so instead of keeping it in garage I decided to sell it to someone back in US.As no one will buy a car from overseas instead of local one only if the price is really attractive.
The car comes with clear title, it is free of loan and liens. You will get from me the keys and all documents to register the car on your name.If the car is not how i described it, i will offer a full refund. It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered at your address in maximum 15 days. Final price is $ 14,900 (the price includes shipping to US and insurance fees).
I want to inform you that the transaction will be supervised by the ebay and both buyer and seller are 100% covered during this transaction.
Let me know if you need any further details about my 2008 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRT-8.
Thank you!

I guess I was wrong, it is a legitimate seller after all. ;) LMAO
ResumeSpeed 09-14-2008, 02:41 AM I emailed and asked for details per how the payment would be handled, here is the reply from "Wendy":
Hello,
Good faith has always been my top priority and my most valued business approach.
I explained that the transaction will be supervised by Ebay. The finacial part of this deal will be manage by them. They are acting like a third party in this deal. They will keep the money until you receive the car and test it.In this way both buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.
Regarding the payment, you will be instructed to deposit the money to an eBay account. They will hold and insure your money until receipt of the car in good condition. That is how their buyer protection policy is working. As far as the seller concerns, i will be glad to know that ebay has the possession of the money during the delivery period. As soon as i will have the confirmation from ebay that the funds have been deposited to their account, i will immediately start the shipping process. You will be given a 15 days inspection period from the day you receive the car at home. If you decide to hold the car, then you will have to authorize ebay to release the funds to me, and the transaction will be completed. In order for us to go to the next level i will need you to provide the following info (Ebay ID, your full name, your exact address) so I can initiate the deal through ebay right away.
After I get in touch with them they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.
I will be waiting for your email with the info in order to get this ball rolling
Best regards,
Wendy

My Repy:
Dear Wendy:
I am very excited to be getting this vehicle, it has been my dream for more than 7 years now! When I saw the first Jeep SRT8 at my local dealer back in 2001 I wanted to buy it right then and there, but at the time I was still working as a meat butcher for minimum wage and could not afford it. I am now in the construction business and forking mortar which pays almost twice as much!
Now there is still one concern - I have to get this transaction past my wife and she is not so keen on the mileage that the Jeep gets. This afternoon she went on the internet to one of those Jeep club sites and found out from other owners that they are only getting 5-6 mpg!!! I knew mileage was bad on such a performance vehicle like the Jeep but I was always told it got around 9-10 mpg.
Anyway, I want to ask you a very big favor. I know you want $14,900 for the Jeep, and there is no doubt this is a pretty good deal. The ones I have been looking at dealers are asking as much as $18,000-$20,000. But I know that dealers are always gouging and I don't want to pay their asking prices.
If you would be willing enough to reduce the price by just $2,000 I know I can convince my wife to go for the deal. That would help offset the low mileage I would be getting, and for you I think $12,900 would still be a great deal.
As far as payment goes, I do not trust ebay, as I had a bad transaction there two years ago and lost $310.00. I also know that many sellers do not like bank checks or money orders as there have been fake ones on the market. My best experiences have been with Western Union since they can track the payment all the way.
I work just a block away from a Western Union office, and I can get cash from my bank Monday morning at 9:00am when they open. I would like to send you 1/2 payment down ($6,450.00) and then the other half as soon as I receive the car. I trust that it is in the condition that you describe and what is shown in the photos. I would also like a signed statement from you verifying that to the best of your knowledge the mileage has not been rolled back.
I am not sure what the exact fees will be from Western Union to send the money, but if is ok with you I would like to split these fees with you.
I am very excited to get this vehicle! I am told it will beat some of the fastest cars out there, including even Chevrolet Trailblazers! That is just amazing!!
I will be at home all day today, please email me as soon as you can so we can close the deal!!!
Thanks again,
RS

Wendy:
Thank you for accepting my generous offer of $12,900. This is really a great deal for both of us. Concerning the payment, I live in a very small town and my bank does not offer the service to transfer funds to other banks. The closest bank that would probably do this for me is more than 95 km away.
Please send me exact details on how to process payment via Ebay so that funds will be held by them until vehicle is delivered.
You mentioned in an earlier email that I would be able to test drive the car for 15 days and if I was not happy I would not have to follow through for the purchase. My wife thought that it would be best for me to do this. I have a question though, is there any limit to the mileage that I can put on the vehicle during the demo period? These Jeeps are made to be driven hard, and I plan to drive the heck out of it to put it through its paces so I hope than in the unlikely situation I would need to return it that extra mileage or a few small scratches would not matter.
My wife also wanted me to ask you to please send a scan copy of the title that shows the accurate vehicle mileage and that it is free from an liens. I don't understand all this, but she will be handling the paperwork and whatever my wife tells me to do I jump!!
Thank you again, I am getting more excited by the hour!!

ResumeSpeed 09-15-2008, 10:21 AM Wendy's reply today:
Hello again,
As regards to sending you copies of the registration documents this is a definate no, no because i am afraid this is how cars get cloned and ringed by criminals obtaining photo copies of documents sorry. I am an honest person and I didn't mean to offend you either but I was advised not to release the documents until I have a confirmation from Ebay that the payment was sent and everything is in place.
If you will not be satisfied with the car, you will be able to send the car back through the same shipping company, and ask ebay to return the funds to you.
Though i am sure you will love the car and will not want to return it, it is good to know that you do have this second option available. If you wish to proceed with the purchase, please provide me your Ebay ID, your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through ebay right away. I will be waiting for your email with the info in order to get this ball rolling

ResumeSpeed 09-15-2008, 03:11 PM My reply Monday afternoon 9/15:
Wendy:
I am working on getting the funds together. I have about $9,200 so far and am asking my brother-in-law to loan me the balance. He is going to try and get me the money this week asap.
I do not have an ebay account. I was referred to your listing by a guy named "Monkeyballin" (screen name I presume) on one of the Trailblazer SS forums. It it easy to set up an ebay account?
I am sure you have been reading in the news about the recent Katrina earthquake and rainstorm we have had here in the states. Over the weekend, in the area I live in, the price of fuel skyrocket - it went up more than $1.50 per gallon!!! So now we are paying $6.90/gallon. I'm sure this is temporary by now my dumb wife is concerned that I should not by this Jeep.
I have some more questions for you, I hope you don't mind, as this is a pretty big purchase for me:
1. Can you give me an HONEST answer to the REAL mileage that you have been getting? Is it really only 5-6 mpg like some of the forum peoples are saying?
2. Did you ever take the Jeep to the track, and if so what were the times you ran? Some owners have claimed to run as good as 9.512 seconds quarter mile, while one owner reported 8.356 seconds, all with stock engine with thermostat upgrade. I am hoping to at least be under 10 seconds without having to spend money on engine modifications.
3. What is the radio that this vehicle has? It is the navigation radio? How have you found the navigation to work?
4. What is the ride quality like? I have heard it can be rough at times. Some owners have reported that they added something called a "GSM Phenolic Spacer" and that afterwards the ride quality was a night and day difference.
Again I want to let you know I appreciate the extra time you have taken to answer my questions. As this is a major purchase I want to make sure everything works out ok, otherwise my wife might divorce me!!
Sorry if I appear a little groggy in my replies this day, I went out Sunday night with some friends to celebrate my getting a brand new car and had a little too much tequila. On the way home one of the guys lit up a funny smelling cigarette and I think I caught some of those fumes too!!
Anyway, I am just two thousand $ away from having all the money, I have it set aside in my savings account. My brother-in-law is supposed to call me tomorrow at 2:00 and confirm he has the balance I need. Will I need to send a check to ebay somehow, or as someone said I might need to open up a PayGal account or something that takes funds from my credit card? All this online stuff is over my head, I am from an older generation and not as "hip" to all these new ways of businessing.
Regards,
RS

ResumeSpeed 09-17-2008, 05:00 AM Reply to Wendy 9/17 Wednesday:
Wendy:
There were a couple of hitches today but I believed I have them ironed out. Yesterday afternoon my brother-in-law called with the news that he would not be able to front me the $2k I needed for the car. His wife caugt wind of the potental deal and nixxed it, saying that peoples should not loan money to relatives! We've been close inlaws a long time so this really disappointed me!!
So I called my bank and set an appointmint with the loaner officer. I went over their at 3:30 and filled out a bunch of forms to borrow the $2,000 I would need for the $12,900 total. He said it looked real good since I had such a down payment, and that I was getting the vehicle at a dealer wholesale rate.
He will call me Wednesday afternoon and have me come in to sign the papers. I will need a couple thing from you though. I gave the banker the fast Jeep's detail information, the year/model/mileage and the VIN number. Since the bank will hold the lean on the car until it's paid off they of course will have there name on the title.
Can you scan the paperwork you have for the Jeep and fax it to my banker? I know you mentioned you did not want to have title floating around as it could be duplicated, but this would be direct to bank itself so would be very safe. I will call him to get faxes number and email that to you by end of day.
Once this is done and I signed papers, then the bank will release the full amount of the funds. I asked about a direct money funds transfer and he said that they cant do from there branch, but can electronic make it work through there main branch in larger city. So this is good news!!! You can get your payment and I can get fast Jeep vehicle to go kill some Chevie Blazerunners!
Can you tell me about how long I can expect to wait to recieve Jeep when you have recieved payment? DO you think it would be more than one week? Also I hope you can have it delivered with full fuel, all cars I have bought, even used, come this way from the seller as sort of a little bonus.
Thanks you so much again and again, I cant tell you how much I appreciate all this and that you wait for me and not sell Jeep to another buyer. I really hope we can settle all this by 20 September, as I am planning a short vacation in just two weeks and of corse would want to take this Jeep!!

ONLY if you do the thermostat and throttle body spacer mods, THEN they will be 3.2 seconds faster, which allows them to get close to Jeep SRT8 territory.

You should make up your own fake escrow company to handle (wink, wink) the transaction and tell them that you will pay the fees. Its the only way your wife ;) will let you make the deal.
mortimer 09-18-2008, 01:25 PM I am a web developer, and I own a web hosting company . . . I could whip up a fake escrow service site in a couple hours :D Maybe we could get Wendy's credit card info, use it to buy a set of Kooks headers, and have a raffle LOL

ResumeSpeed 09-19-2008, 04:31 AM Rely to Wendy Friday 9/19:
Hi Wendy:
Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. I had the day off from work but my wife made me drive around to dealerships looking at other choices. She still is against me getting the fast Jeep. We spent almost 2 hours at a Toyota dealership, she had her eyes on the electric version of that Preus model.
Jeez, I told her that from what I have seen on the 'net that there are not many mods you can do to an electric vehicle. Outside of a t-stat and fan mod, and maybe some headers, one is pretty limited. Besides, I try and tell her that the Preus is ugly enough to make a train turn around and take a dirt road!!
Anyways, onto business. My banker guy (actually a pretty hot babe but that's a whole nuther story!), does not quite understand why receiving funds from them would complicate the sale as you state. As I backup I have just signed up an account on ebay (Mnkyblln2008) but they say it will take up to 3 days to validate for my credit card on file (small bank issued card or something).
The bank still insists that they receive a copy of the title by way of faxing. She told me that there is no ways of risk for you in doing this, that noone at her branch would steal the informations from the documents, that they are held in strict confidentially.
Would you supply me the information from you of your complete name and adress, and your bank number (routing number she said) so that she can prepare a funds transfer? I thought that we could do a small partial payment with ebay, to hold the car (don't let anyone else buy it please!!!), and then the balanced funds by the wired bank note.
I would also like to get from you the name of the vehicle shipping company. I want to assure that delivery will be prompt and reliable. Too many stories out there of issues with damaged vehicles as they are not packed properly for shipment. And for the fast Jeep it will be a long jerney since I am so far away.
My wife just chirped in, she says "what about the warranty", since the car has been exported out of country she says warranty is voided, even if it is shipped back to the states. She used to work for Chevie SS dealership last decade so she says she knows this. Can this possible be the case? If so, will you provide a letter to me in writing that you will cover warrantie items till 3 years/44,500 miles like the factory provides originally?
So to recap, I send via ebay auction $1,200 deposit (still don't know how to to this, I look on ebay site but they don't offer much informations on escargo services, I think they use separate escargo companies), and then the balance of $11,640 by wire transfer from banking papers.
Richard
