: Sorry I Can't Understand U

When I purchased my 06 Jeep in Sept I asked if there was a hands free facility on the Jeep.

The salesperson gave me this story that the U-connect did not work on the Euopean models because it did not understand the UK accent, but they were working for a solution.

What he couldn't tell me was if I had to replace the system currently installed or if a software upgrade was required.

Not sure what the US system looks like

Mark There is something wrong with this explanation from the dealer. Its true the U connect does not understand the UK accent. I'm from Manchester now living in PA. I have to change my voice to US English or it gets all the instructions wrong. However when I do that it works just fine.

However I'm not sure the U Connect system operates in the UK since its a chrysler based program. There may be some info here
http://www.chrysler.com/crossbrand/uconnect/chrysler/interface.html

Contacted UK customer support and they confirmed that U-connect will not be available in the UK.

However they gave me a part no for a Hand-Free kit. Although it does cut the radio it does not go through the speakers (separate speaker). Might look else where for a 3rd party solution.

Might even get it covered in leather to match the rest of the dash. ;)

That's a shame because the routing through the speaker system etc is great. U Connect basically uses Bluetooth technology so I would think that a good installer would be able to hook into the existing wiring. It would save you setting up some other system - Good Luck:)

I'm not laughing at you, just with you. Thats funny as hell that it does not understand the accent. ;) :p

If you connect the phone to the system, you can still use the handset to dial and make entries. Just use the U Connect for speaking...

Yes - the U-Connect would be best, but I would have to import the system from the US then find an installer to fit it. Might work out fairly expensive.

Mark,
I am originally from Watford and still have a heavy British accent.
My Uconnect understands me perfectly well, so that was a line of crap that the salesman gave you.
My navigation unit gets confused when I drive on the left though:)

Finally bit the bullet and installed the Parrot (see prev post). GC in the UK now say there is a licence issue in the UK !!

The installer did it in 15 mins - every thing just seem to be fixed on with clips.

Mutes the Nav/Radio and comes through the speakers.

Good color screen for contact photo's etc.

At least it covers up those 2 empty switch positions.

Rob

There are several UK fitters but the one I used was

http://www.avrmobiles.co.uk/

It was £250 supplied (Jeep Leades for stereo mute + through car stereo speakers) + fitted (work or home).

I use it with my SE P910i - the voice activated dialing work very well - unless you've opened the sunroof going through a tunnel to listen to that great exhaust sound !!

very clean install and i've heard good things about this Parrot unit

now you just need to hardwire that radar detector in so you don't have a wire dangling

looks good man!

Mark that Parrot system looks good! It's giving you more information than I get from u connect.

The right hand drive pictures look great!

That also looks like an escort radar/laser detector. How's that working for you?

"Hey Limeylee" U connect only understands southern british accents. It defintely does not speak Mancunian. The number 4 is by far the biggest problem:rolleyes:

MARK16, why do you have a headlight elevation adjustment lever to the left of your Parrot? I thought that it’s necessary only for the Xenon equipped cars? Or am I seeing things?

I must admit I do sometimes have a problem with the word "call"
and by the way, it's not just the Uconnect that can't understand northerners!;)

I've had a Radar/Laser Detector in the car for many years. It has never ever picked up a trap (that I've not already seen). But its one of those things - If I take it out of the car then next day I'll be zapped !

It doesn't work on the fixed variable speed camera's (but you deserve to get a ticket if you can't see them)

The manual says it for adjusting the headlight level for different car loads. So if youv'e filled your boot up for XMAS and have all the family in the back and are towing the house behind you then wack it up to number 3.

It seems as thought he UK specification is quite different to the US - I assume its still manufactured in the US?

MARK16

No, over in Austria - on the same production line as the new ML.

Ok That makes sense. I think you get a few more standard features than we get. Also when I look at your picture the front fairing looks different. Look at the picture of mine next to my name it looks as though my fog lights are enclosed whereas yours are not. Unless that's a black enclosure.

MARK16

Yes, it's a black enclosure.

MARK, I know what it does. We in US don't have these level adjustors (manual or automatic) unless the car is equipped with Xenon lights. I was wondering if UK GCs had Xenons. I guess not. But it's just another example of European/UK/Japanese cars having better/more technical options. Most US car manufacturers couldn't be bothered to install anything more powerful than a candle for lights. At least we get good engines...:)

MARK16

Yes, I must aggree the HEMI is a good engine.

No we don't get Xeon's either, although the bulb types are different :

H11 - (Dip Beam)
9005 - (Main Beam)
H10 - Fogs

Have replaced the H11 and 9005's with PIAA Xtrem Force and they look (and work) much better. Can't get hold of H10's for the fog's anywhere !

Not sure if the technical options are any better - Although the price we pay includes everything except the DVD player. (Sunroof, NAV system etc).

Talking to the dealership yesterday they recon there's only about 100 in the UK and there are no plans to import the 2007 model (if you believe dealers !)
