: Rear Differential Is Missing Paint

I picked up a pre-owned GC SRT8 that had 15000 miles on it. The vehicle was flawless with exception to the curb rash on the wheels  and paint missing from the rear diff. I don't just mean slight peeling...I mean no paint exist on the rear diff! Is is possible that the rear diff gets so hot that it melts the paint away? Anyone else experience this? I don't see any TSBs on the rear diff so I assume this means it is bullet proof.

Dana 44 rear...pretty much bullet proof for our use. I think they painted them with a magic marker. Seen several with same issue. Mine came off also. Simply sprayed it with some high temp engine paint at about 7,000 miles. Have over 23,000 now with about 13,000 towing at sustained high speeds, which definitely generates some high temps. Paint has not come off again. Wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks for the tip teda....no more worries. Considering that you have 23k miles now...I very interested in any nuances that you have found with your GC SRT8. Thanks for sharing.

Mine almost looks rusted at 7K miles.

Seems to be a problem with temps during application, best guess anyway.

LMAO WTF is with that horn!? My dad drives a Mobile Production Studio for NBC Sports, and he installed a train horn on his tractor trailer. It's hilarious when he hits it, people 50 yards in front of him get the hell out of the way. hahhahaha

Str8Srt8...I notice that they are installed underneath the SRT8/between the pipes. What about dirt and/or water entering in the horns? Is this a problem?

Other than blowing off the differential's paint, no problems at all hehe.
I've been in the rain and today the snow (it snowed in Puget Sound!).
No problems at all. They are about 1" higher than the differential and pointed down. So if any water came up , it would just drip back down. I would think dust would be more of a problem, so I'll keep my eye one them. I blow them out daily as preventive maintenance :D

I'd be curious to see any member pics of an under-the-hood installation.

I painted my complete rear diff after getting it home. The outer axle ends aren't painted either, stock? I also painted the right side behind the tire, in front of it. Painted over the grey factory underneath paint. Next I'm going to paint the front diff and large steel block. I like a full detailed under as well as the outer surface areas. "GOING FAST WITH CLASS" Motto! (borrowed this from my Buick GSCA Club Days motto) I may even paint the outside the frame rails to the bottom air dam, black too! Gene

Mine does not look as bad as the above pics, it has faded, im going to respray the entire rear differential over the winter with some Krylon rust prevent and then go over it with high temp black.

when mine was brand new there was too much rust for my liking, I think it was $80 to undercoat the axles, frame rails, etc
