: Hennessey: My meeting at the Shindig
BuilderBill 08-03-2008, 09:18 AM Oh boy...here we go.
I met James (formerly of Frank Racing) who is the sales agent for Hennessey Performance engineering.
BTW James is the guy on the forums lately....JT. It is NOT John.
Have to say, after spending hours with the guy, Hennessey did good in his hire.
Certainly, as is WELL documented, there have been serious problems at that shop over the years. They have been (per James) working extremely hard this year to clean up all the warranty issues as well as begin a real effort to satisfy customers. I surely don't know 1st hand as most of you don't if in fact they are cleaning up their act. Time will tell.
Now what I do know:
*The transporter they brought the Jeep and Challenger in is unbelievable. A few bucks in that thing. It is also used for customer cars for pick up and delivery.
*The Challenger looks great, it is headed to South Carolina this week for final tweaking and testing. Lets see what is does in the magazine tests coming up in about a week or so. Please...no "CobraKid goes faster that this for under a grand" comments. We all agree that putting the spray on a vehicle helps the 1/4 mile time cheaper than any other mod. If you really want to compare the Challenger with something, I would pick one of the Ported Power cars (turbo Challenger vs. turbo Challenger) and do a head to head comparison. Now that would be interesting.
* The Jeep looked good....again, I would love to see a matchup between it and a similar vehicle built by a competitor like Power Ported or someone else.
NEITHER vehicle ran with the other Mopars at the drag strip. We can speculate why, although once again, they are headed to the South Carolina facilities for final tuning and testing. I guess I would rather not run an untested vehicle and have issues.
Bottom line....I'm willing to look forward with Hennessey rather than rehash old BS. Lets see what happens in the magazine tests. I do not look at this group the same way I look at GSM, although alot of people have lost a ton of money with both outfits. I don't believe GSM will ever get their act together, where Hennessey...well lets wait and see.
Ok guys flame away!
Bill
Blown7 08-03-2008, 09:21 AM Only one question from me, Why did James leave FRI?
Jeff
NeverFastEnough 08-03-2008, 09:27 AM No pics?? I certainly hope for their sake and the integrity of business that they can get their act together. It's unbelievable to me any company with that many issues can stay in business for this long. Then again I'm sure they can afford the lawyers to do so.
BuilderBill 08-03-2008, 09:28 AM Only one question from me, Why did James leave FRI?
Jeff
James told me it was for a greater opportunity.
He left on good terms and NEVER bad mouthed Frank Racing. Something to be said for that.
Bill
Jeep Trick 08-03-2008, 09:30 AM So Bill, where you going there as a customer or a sales rep???? :D

Sorry about the pics. There are a bunch of photos on the LX site under Shindig.
I was too busy yacking.
I agree with the lawyer comment....in any business, it is IMPOSSIBLE to move forward when constantly faced with crap from the past. Extremely difficult to clean up that many problems.
Bill
BuilderBill 08-03-2008, 09:36 AM So Bill, where you going there as a customer or a sales rep???? :D
Haaa...I actually was looking at buying one before I bought my rig. Thankfully, I researched that!
Ok....I'm on the take for a few percent of each Hennessey ride I can sell.
I'll bet I would be broke at the end of the year!
Bill
veyronSRT8@TTCreations 08-03-2008, 09:38 AM IMO, Hennessey will need to do a lot of cleaning up to make up for all their years of bad work...i never have been a customer so i cant speak from personal experience, but from what i have read/heard/ and seen, their workmanship for the buck is some of the wost out there. it would be nice to see them turn it around and get on track, but for this to happen they need to be way competitive (offer packages at half the price they are charging now and do the job better than the competition) many years of bad service will be a hard thing for any company to overcome, they are just fortunate their name was able to carry them as far as it did (that and all the money they took). rather than putting out one fast car/yr (that breaks) they need to start with smaller projects to build back their rep, and lots of them. guess time will tell....either way tho, thanx for the write up on your experience Bill, look forward to hearing more from ya once that NAG is put thru some testing. ;)

I didn't say as a sales rep for Hennessey. ;)
Hennessey's maybe interested in some drivetrain upgrades!!

I agree...it is a HUGE uphill battle.
They absolutely excel in marketing.....now the business end?????

NeverFastEnough 08-03-2008, 09:46 AM I wish you luck Bill. I'm sure it had to be a hard decision to associate your name with that brand considering their well documented checkered past, but IF they can improve I'm sure it could be worth the risk. From a business perspective it is a gamble, but from a personal standpoint and now knowing what I know now about Hennessey I wouldn't spend a dime on them outta respect for the customers they did screw in the past.

Right? however, we all now that once a company has been dragging their own name thru the dirt for years on end, that it will take more than just "good" marketing to survive. after all once their name has been associated with bad business...their primary marketing tool is gone.
Hmm....ok that does make sense. Damn good guess.;)

But if he remains his own entity, just acting as a supplying vendor to Hennessey what harm comes from that?
Bill just keep'em on COD for a while till there credit improves.
Blown7 08-03-2008, 09:55 AM If my "sources" are correct, in and spite of what has transpired publicly on the business end they do have some real deep inside Chrysler connections as I believe they had a Challenger long before any dealer had one.
You just have to respect that,............ if we only had as good insider connections........

True. As long as they pay the man first. I'd also be afraid of Hennessey throwing Bill under the bus IF some complications should arise. You NEVER know what might happen with a company that has had that kind of reputation.

Yes, but his units are pretty contained so damage should be pretty evident as to the source.
A bad trans is a bad trans, same goes for the T-case

I'm NOT associating Paramount or Southern Hotrod with Hennessey!!!!!!!!
Please don't misconstrue where I'm going with this.
Unfortunately for them, they do not have the in house people to redesign a NAG1. After all, with my Mechanical Engineering degree, I've been on this project for close to 8 months.
If they are going to produce the same hp as some of you guys are producing, they will need a high torque capacity NAG1. Done.
No business gamble, if they want to buy from Eddie...send a bank certified check.

Correct and good advice.
With my construction business, I have found it is easier to please people than to get lawyers involved. As I 'm sure you know, to the lawyers, it mostly matters who has the deeper pockets to pay them and their clients.
Some companies will NEVER figure out the customer service aspect though.
All this said, there are a few companies out there that I would absolutely refuse to sell to, although, they could have some unknown buy from Eddie and get our unit anyway.
Bill

As far as the lawyer comment goes, It had nothing to to with customer service. I am a business owner too and have never had to involve any lawyers in a dispute with a customer. Heck I don't even remember that last time I had a despite with a customer.
I'm just saying if you are going to have any formal agreement with aforementioned company, have lawyers (that you personally trust) go over it with a fine tooth comb. Any company that has had the problems that the aforementioned company has had and are still kicking know how to write agreements that will favor themselves if things become problematic.
Just saying, go the extra mile to protect yourself from becoming a victim of another company's bad business practices.
We unfortunately don't live in a world where a handshake means anything anymore.

Pretty sad, but absolutely correct.
We have witnessed that on our own forum haven't we?
For example, amazing the paper work involved between the company manufacturing the Kevlar clutches and my new company. Whew.
And you still wonder if it totally protects you? Really, we all know the answer there, don't we?

GotStroked 08-03-2008, 12:23 PM Best of luck Bill but watch your 6. I've heard the same "we're cleaning our act up" comment about half a dozen times from Hennessey before yet the complaints and lawsuits still ensue at the same rate.
Make sure they prepay for everything, Stainless Works found out the hard way (among many others) about this.

COD..........at least until a INDIVIDUAL proves himself for 8-12 months. Money out......money in....its that simple.
Harrison@Stage6 08-03-2008, 12:31 PM I hope to see Henn. turn around. It's a huge company with the Viper market kinda cornered. I just picked up the new DuPont Registery and Henn. is advertising their Chally with times of 0-60 at 3.4(or .5 I believe) and a top speed of 201. I'd love to see that tested in a magazine for verification. Seems like a scarry ride in a Chally at 200mph!!!
NeverFastEnough 08-03-2008, 12:39 PM Both cars will be fired up and both cars we will offer to let customers go for a ride in. The challenger will also be tested by Magazines next month in CA so you will see how it performs as well.
The Jeep will be driven back across country from GA to TX after the ShinDig as our transporter needs to head out to CA!
Anyone there get a chance to go for a ride in the Chally or Jeep or was I correct in assuming that these cars weren't even started up??
BuilderBill 08-03-2008, 12:53 PM Anyone there get a chance to go for a ride in the Chally or Jeep or was I correct in assuming that these cars weren't even started up??
The 2 vehicles were started up, unloaded, and basically used for show.
Bill
SRTFreak 08-03-2008, 12:54 PM I know some deep insight into the whole hennessey deal and bill would like to know your take on why 3 of hennessey top techs left on a whim. This has happened only since the addition of the new "face" of hennessey. I kow why but what is being told to the mass's as to their leaving HPE.
NeverFastEnough 08-03-2008, 12:58 PM The 2 vehicles were started up, unloaded, and basically used for show.

HAHA! Well that's a good sign I suppose!
navyavi469 08-03-2008, 01:00 PM I think it would suck for hennessey to get their hands on one of Bill's transmissions. Becuase you know the first thing you're going to see when you open up a car magazing in a few months.
"Monster Hennessey Turbo Jeep/LX rips 10's"
Hennessey will get all the credit as usual for having the fastest tuned Chryslers, meanwhile, the people who have been out there pounding the streets and strips, breaking parts, spending cash, inovating, revising, testing, and posting their info on the forums will be overlooked as mere pawns. The car mags are biased as crap, mark my words, THIS WILL HAPPEN!!!
Grip Grip 08-03-2008, 01:16 PM Bill,
As somone else stated, COD only or something along those lines. Might want to spend a couple hundred bucks and take a look at their Dunn and Bradstreet report before offering up a line of credit. Wait, I bet you've already done that. ;)

Remember no Chrysler vehicle is going anywhere fast until the NAG1 programming is under control.
As much power as any tuner can claim on a dyno, it still doesn't relate or mean squat on the asphalt yet.

Hennessy has been using upgraded transmissions built in Houston for a few years now. I dont see any reason why they would change suppliers. Now please continue back with your "which flea owns the dog" discussion....

Agreed. After reviewing the situation with Eddie at Southern Hotrod (the retailer for these products) we will do the smart thing and not deal with something that could cause us problems.
With my construction company, some our our best jobs are the ones that we did not bid on. In other words, the contractor that was awarded the job was never paid.

Winston was on the money with his comment and Andy is right about Henn. singing the same old tune that they've turned the corner. I think you made a right choice. Prepare2Win 08-04-2008, 08:34 PM Congratulations to the guy who went to the car show and saw 2 of their cars, met the salesman and saw the trailer...NUT-SWINGERS!
Well, I've been thinking about this, and maybe Carl's right! Here Hennessey could have gone and turned over a new leaf for real this time, and we're just hatin on him because we are unable to get past the last ~decade of fuccups and bad rep, like the "NUT-SWINGERS" we are. Turn the other cheek, right?
Besides, who is this BuilderBill guy and what has he done for us anyway?
Carl, you can be my pal... I say lets get a group buy together on these upgraded 5A580s that are supposedly being made somewhere in Houston, and try them out on our own dime! Photos are overrated if you ask me.
Also, can you talk to Jon for me... I want to know about that nifty 2006 bodywork retrofit for the 2008 that's featured on the HPE webpage... the 2008 stuff has got to be around, and I can send him my 2006 parts for his next "SRT530"...

I guess you are tied in with them as well. And who the hell do you think you are to ask who Builder Bill is? He is one of the few who is dedicated to the SRT communtiy by developing Driveline componets for our rigs and is a highly respectable man.
grocery gtr 08-04-2008, 08:52 PM Congratulations to the guy who went to the car show and saw 2 of their cars, met the salesman and saw the trailer. Have any of you been to their shop, seen the 30 cars there, seen the 20 employees working on about $4m worth of cars at any given time? Oh ya, the guy is a sheister, almost out of business, in need of a tranny builder. LOL, yeah, go see their business operation and tell me what you see.
I am a customer and I have been to the Hennessy shop many times and have been very happy with the cars they have built for me. Anyone else here ever been to their place? Oh yeah, JH is an urban legend right? Just 2 words for you:
NUT-SWINGERS!
YOU MUST BE LOCAL.THE MASSES OF COMPAINTS DON`T LIE,CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY

I'm NOT sure I would recommend it for most of you guys though.
See....I THROW OUT all the OEM clutch packs, sprags etc!!!!!!!!!!
Told you guys this would be a fun thread!:D

***! You are one dumb ass to question what Builder Bill has done for this forum and us REAL Jeep SRT8 owners, unlike yourself.
Maybe your stupid, or maybe your just lacking oxygen from having Hennessey's tiny ballsack in your mouth and throat--who knows? Either way, get the FOOK out of here! We dont' want you here! No Hennessey trolls or nutt swingers allowed.
GO AWAY PLEASE!!!!

Okay... sorry bout that. :( Clearly Hennessey is no joking matter!
Seriously Bill, I think these imaginary modded 5A580s have got to be good source of cores for you once they get blown up.... maybe you could get a billboard on the way to lonestar park or something.
I'm looking forward to your LSD kits, just gotta figure out how to outsmart that darn TCM

Our TCM is relatively easy compared to the 7 speed Mercedes that has its "brains" in the pan!
Speaking of 7 speeds....did you know there is NO dipstick on a 7 speed Mercedes?
Pretty trick setup, VERY trick pan also.
Oh well...let's get back to Hennessey.

With so many NAG1's heading to Florida, I believe that I may send Isaac down with his truck to drop off NAG's and pick up cores.
What is with Florida??????
Our NAG1 orders are coming in from Florida disproportionately....waiting for the phone call from Texas....and not from GCulver either!
Florida, serious, what is with you guys???? Some pretty fast, well the fastest, Hemi's I believe.

Oh its ruined now, nut swinger guy will never respond to my post so the fun is over.
You're talking about the W7A700 I take it? Geez, I thought better of the MB people than to put the controller down there... then again, doesnt matter what the TCM is trying to do if your trans is in charge. You wouldn't happen to know how close this one fits up, would you?
OurZoo 08-04-2008, 11:51 PM Interesting to see you being optimistic about Henessey. Because your well respected here, this will be a good thing for them in itself. I got to go check out the pics on LX.

The reason we did not run the Challenger was just because we had nobody there to drive it. I made the decision that the car not be driven on the track and not James or anyone else. We went to this event at the last minute because James thought it would be a good idea to go. I had just hired James and it was his third day working for us.
James will be a huge asset for our company and he wanted to go to the ShinDig and make a presence and so we let him do that.
That being said if you would like to come by the shop, I will personally take you for a ride in the car.
We have our own track at our facility and the invitation is open.

To set the record straight on the Transmissions, James was contacted about Bills Transmission upgrades. James asked him to send information along to us so we could look at his product. We are currently very happy with our Hemi Transmission supplier but I am more than willing to look at it.

GotStroked 08-05-2008, 02:43 PM We need "pay to ban" badly.
Dave Golder 08-05-2008, 02:43 PM I know some deep insight into the whole hennessey deal and bill would like to know your take on why 3 of hennessey top techs left on a whim. This has happened only since the addition of the new "face" of hennessey. I kow why but what is being told to the mass's as to their leaving HPE.
I am very curious to know the names of these three techs that "left" on a whim?
Since I have been here we have had the same techs, same fabricators etc. One tech was let go and we just hired another tech. Previous to that the only techs that ever left were fired for not being capable of doing the work or other reasons. This goes back to us being at Lonestar.
So this information is absolutley incorrect. I would love to hear your deep insight. Feel free to PM me.

BuilderBill 08-05-2008, 05:14 PM Could this have been BuilderBill's ploy?..........
"Bad publicity is still good publicity"
Hmmm, everyone now knows a lot more about the High Torque Capacity NAG1's than before.
Could this be a joint plot between Bill--Southern Hotrod--Hennessey?
Possibly a conspiracy??? Could Bill & Eddie be learning from the Master Himself???
Oh no...say it isn't so!
We do know it would be too ingenious and clever a plot for Eddie and Bill to hatch by themselves!:D

Naw.......... Bill and Eddie are pretty smart :p and I'd be willing to challenge any aftermarket performance company with the talent we have in some people on this board.
James from Hennessey is cool, I like James and I'll leave the other GM's and people, companies and stuff alone cause I don't know them but I'll go so far to say that some of the board members here can build a vehicle every bit as capable and probably better than ANY big name company out there.

I posted about meeting James, I agree with you Jeff.
I don't post about people I really have not dealt with.
