: Earthquake...
projectfilly 07-29-2008, 12:58 PM SoCal members, where are you and how strong was it at your location?
We're in Costa Mesa and it was pretty strong here. We were worried about glass shattering.
The news report says it was centered in SW Chino Hills.....my BF stayed home sick from work today. Guess where we live.....SW Chino Hills.
ajharman 07-29-2008, 01:00 PM Oh no did it break every headlight cover in your building????????OHHHH NOOOOOOOOOO
projectfilly 07-29-2008, 01:03 PM HAHAHAHA......i was just about to say "don't worry....your headlight covers are safe."
robpp 07-29-2008, 01:06 PM Sounds like you and the others at the Stillen shop are OK. Thats whats important.
From CNN:
A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Los Angeles was hit by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake Tuesday.
The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.
A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.
projectfilly 07-29-2008, 01:14 PM We're all fine here. Everyone is a little freaked out because the phones are spotty at best, but everyone is ok.
On a side note, I just got ahold of my mom in Kansas (where I'm from)...She'd been trying for a while to get ahold of me and her first words were "oh thank god! i was on expedia booking a ticket to come out there!!"
Kinda crazy to know that the epicenter was directly under my house though....
Felt it pretty good here in San Diego (Kearny Mesa). My office is on the third floor -the shaking was noticeable but nothing serious. No broken windows or anything like that.
Jeep Trick 07-29-2008, 01:23 PM Thats some crazy $hit!!!
I'll take my hurricanes, thank you very much
Oakr8er 07-29-2008, 01:37 PM It was felt pretty good here in Irvine. The building swayed like it was on rollers...total trip!
Glad everyone is safe!
I felt it pretty good here, next to Angel Stadium, Ran straight outside =P And my tires are getting put on ATM, better call and make sure it did not fall off the lift =)
5.8 Centered in Chino Hills

See, I'd rather have a quake over a hurricane any day!
Matt McKenzie 07-29-2008, 01:56 PM Honestly, I have been in a lot of earthquakes, and I think they are kinda fun...of course not when lots of propoerty gets damaged and people get hurt. Glad everyone is safe!
See, I'd rather have a quake over a hurricane any day!
Same here, although with a Quake you never know when it is going to happen, so there is a element of suprise there, but hurricanes, well you know when it coming but your Effed anyways.

Exactly. 97% of the structures around here are earthquake ready, that helps out a lot. Ever since the quake up here in 1989, $$$$$$$$$ of dollars has been spent in retrofitting highways/bridges/buildings.
(did you know that 99.3% of all statistics are made up?)
Vinnysrt8 07-29-2008, 02:27 PM wow that good everyone is ok
SRT8Girl12 07-29-2008, 02:37 PM I was driving the beast when it happened. I was coming to a stop thinking, my suspension is f-ed up or there is an earthquake! Lol...Glad to know everyone is ok. And f hurricanes, you are crazy...

I lived here thru Hurricane Andrew and a few others, it helps owning safe structures that aren't dramaticaly affected by strong winds.
No one in my family nor I have ever suffered major damage from a hurricane
It's all in the prep
How about we all agree to hate tornadoes!
navyavi469 07-29-2008, 02:53 PM See, I'd rather have a quake over a hurricane any day!
Thats why you live in california and I live in Florida. Rain and wind any day over ever single building fall on top of your ass.
Harrison@Stage6 07-29-2008, 03:14 PM I like having my warning...... wait a minute, I live in Ponte Vedra Beach..... one hasn't hit here since the 70's. We're in the good part of Florida!!
jrCobra 07-29-2008, 04:47 PM My TBSS buddy is up in L.A. for work and he texted me about it. He was in a car and thought something was wrong with the vehicle, lol.
aplatero1984 07-29-2008, 04:56 PM earthquakes sucks!!
ColdSRT 07-29-2008, 08:40 PM That sucks. I am waiting for the next good one up here. Last one was a 7.9. That $hit was insane.
ChadC 07-29-2008, 10:09 PM most crap old buildings have fallen in recent quakes.....everything in CA is over-regulated, my now 2 year old house has a post tension slab, another quake requirement. Ive lived thru several hurricanes in Hawaii, they were kinda fun....I can deal with quakes and fire.....tornado's suck.
SoCal07 07-29-2008, 10:46 PM Downtown Los Angeles in a high rise. It was fun.
Crank 07-30-2008, 02:37 AM I live in chino about five miles away max, and it was pretty scary since i have never felt an earthquake like that before. Dropped pictures and vases but lucky everyone was alright.
BillsSRT 07-30-2008, 03:23 PM Moved my bed and all my furniture about a foot. Wierd thing was both dogs slept right thru it!!
Sheri'SRT8 07-30-2008, 06:27 PM Was in Encino at client's house. Swayed pretty good. Nothing significant.
I was living right on top of Northridge EQ in 1994. That was something. A real attention getter.
QWKSRT 07-31-2008, 12:48 AM Little rock-n-roll here in santa clarita, nothing like the northridge quake.
I like having my warning...... wait a minute, I live in Ponte Vedra Beach..... one hasn't hit here since the 70's. We're in the good part of Florida!!
You had to say something!! Your screwed this season:eek:
NeverFastEnough 07-31-2008, 07:40 AM You had to say something!! Your screwed this season:eek:
+1.. HAHA! I was thinking the same thing!
blackss562 07-31-2008, 10:59 AM I was out getting my truck washed when it hit. Had to explain to my boys (5 & 3 yrs old) what it was. They took their first one well.
Moved my bed and all my furniture about a foot. Wierd thing was both dogs slept right thru it!!
Rumbled through the house pretty good, and both my dogs slept through it also. I thought they were supposed alert us to this stuff.
OurZoo 08-02-2008, 11:41 PM I was at home removing some pot racks from the walls in the kitchen. I felt a nice quick shake and then the rolling began. I ran upstairs with the intention of getting my daughter and wife out of the house. Been awhile since I felt a good one. I definitely won't miss these in Arizona.
of all places, in my elevator. I first thought wow, this thing has a prob with one of its cables. once I got home I found out what realy hapend.
