: Are you really using 93 Octane Gas
Ink Pump 11-15-2006, 07:57 PM The manual is ambiguos - My local mechanic says it makes no difference
Why should I pay another 20 cents a gallon for 93.
I have 91 rated gas - Can I use it?
What are you guys doing?
I thought the manual said 91. This was covered on the blue site, a lower octane could possibly be used , but no WOT or racing.
Ink Pump 11-15-2006, 08:20 PM I'd like to read the thread on that - anyone got a link?
FastJeepSRT8 11-15-2006, 08:22 PM I absolutely use the highest octane I can find. I believe it does make a difference over time. I don't think you'll notice a loss in Hp right away but you're engine and fuel system will be better off down the road if you stick to premium. My 5.9 required Premium I don't know why the SRT does not. If you can believe this my dealership gave me a full tank of 87 octane from Speedway when I picked it up. For those of you not in the Chicago metro area this the worst gas you can find. I wouldn't put it in my lawnmower and these boneheads put it in my SRT8! If you need to save the money I wouldn't go lower than mid-grade fuel. Jmo

Ink Pump 11-15-2006, 08:25 PM I got to admit I'm confused by the US rating. I'm from the UK now living in PA and the plate on the dispenser says 91 + 2 = 93. What the heck does that mean?

Where does it say: 91+2=93? I'm not formiliar w/the plate on the dispenser.

I'm sorry I didn't explain that very well. I have a Porsche and on the fuel flap it says 91 +2 =93. Therefore I put 93 rated gas in it. In fact the gas station I use has the same thing right on the pump. 91 + 2.
However with the SRT it doesn't seem so clear because the manual says 91.
I guessed the +2 was some kind of additive. I put 93 in the vehicle but wasn't sure if it was really necessary.
Thanks for the thread link - thier server is busy so I'll read that later
Since WOT is irresistable I'm thinking I should stick with 93:)

Sunoco has both 91 and 93 and the difference in price is only 2 cents per gallon, so I just go ahead and use the 93. 40 cents extra per fill up is fine with me.
MrHemi 11-16-2006, 07:18 AM Open the fuel door and there's a little sticker that reads "Premium Fuel Recommended". I always use 91 - 93 octane... better safe than sorry, and it's only a few bucks more each fill-up.
Mrdredd 11-16-2006, 07:37 AM People in California don't have 93 octane available, so Im sure they had to tune the engine to run on 91, as they couldn't alienate "the coast".
MatFab 11-16-2006, 08:01 AM for ho cheap it is to pay for the extra gas just toss premium in.. an extra $2 per fillup?

For some reason Sunoco pulled all their stations out of Erie. I've been using GETGO because every time I spend $50 at the Giant Eagle grocery store I get 10 cents off per gallon. Now I realize I'm starting to sound like a cheapskate but I didn't get wealthy enough to buy the SRT without watching the pennies:p
UBDSLO1 11-16-2006, 06:32 PM 93 is not always available in all areas, hence the 91. I would not want to use low grade fuel in the SRT. Lower grade fuel can/could lead to pinging and detonation, and the PCM is probably not calibrated for it anyway. Higher hp engines always use premium fuels and the HEMI 6.1 is one of them. Just my 2 cents.:)
SRTJeep 11-17-2006, 08:46 AM Someone asked the SRT Engs at the Nats in Topeka last July, they said in a pinch it was OK to use in a limited way. NO WOT, RACING etc. This engine is designed to work optimal with 94 oct. I've tried it any it really wakes up the performance. (mixed some 100 UL) This is a high compression engine so don't use any lower octane fuel. I use non-ethonol blended premium 93 oct. (better mileage and only cost 10 cents a gallon more) The Sunoco 94 is the ticket to run for maximum performance, if you can find it. HTH Gene
FastJeepSRT8 11-17-2006, 10:00 PM We don't see 94 octane in my area but the Gas City's around here sell racing fuel. I think it's rated at 100 octane. Anyone know if it would hurt anything to run this once in a while? At over $5 a gallon I doesn't hardly seem worth it but curiosity does have the best of me though. I see a lot of the ricers hanging out at this pump on Saturday nights.
Str8Srt8 11-18-2006, 12:23 AM I use the highest AKI (anti knock index) fuel I can find. 91 is 99% of what I use. 91 is actually a lot lower in octane rating. In short, by preventing early detonation by using a higher aki fuel, the end results are better performance and less engine wear.

SRTJeep 11-20-2006, 02:23 AM I mainly use 93 Oct Premium but in hot weather use some 100 oct mixed in. My JGC seems to like this mix, engine pulls harder. The WA State fuel ruined my Buick GN's fuel system. I had to replace most of the fuel components because of some sort of residue in my FP Screen, injectors needed cleaning, an expensive mess. (vacation trip to Seattle) I like Shell or BP Brand of Gas. Gene
Razorecko 11-28-2006, 06:26 PM I dumped half a tank in of straight 100 unleaded and the power difference was significant, the car pulled harder alot sooner on throttle than on 93. Much more responsive. This was also in about 45 degree weather. The only thing that sucked was the big hole in my wallet afterwards.
