: For those with the Mopar remote start...
MrHemi 11-13-2006, 11:50 AM I'm interested in the Mopar remote start. Do the doors remain locked when it's remotely started? How long does it remain running? Do you have to insert the key and turn to "start"? How do you turn it off if you decide not get in right away? Did the dealer do the install?
Sorry for all the dumb questions... I've never had a remote start before.
I don't have the "Mopar" remote start, but my Mopar dealer uses a seperate custom shop to do thier remote starters(brand I have is Coolstart). The Mopar remote kit is over $300(uninstalled) I believe. Most shops will install one for ~$250. You need a new programmed key for the installation(it fools the alarm, so it thinks the key is in). Not all remote starters are exactly thr same, my old one required 2 pushes of the start button to start, the new one I push & hold 4 a few secs. Some have other buttons that can be programed to unlock doors for an extra charge. Yes, the door should remain locked when you remotely start it. You can remotely shut it off if you decide not to go, & you must put your key in once in the vehicle & turn it to "ON", do not hit the starter. If you don't insert key & have it in the ON position it will shut off if you touch the brake/shifter/gas(depending on brand of starter). Most starters will alow the vehicle to run for 15-25mins then it will shut off in case you forgot/accidently started it. Have your heat/(A/C) set where you desire before you leave the vehicle & it will be ready, depending on how long it runs. :)
MrHemi 11-13-2006, 04:17 PM Great info - thanks a bunch!
saywhat 11-13-2006, 08:15 PM I have the Mopar start and it is so cool!! It cost me about $425.00 after parts and install. The doors stay locked. You hit the button twice to hear the horn beep twice then the Jeep starts and you here 1 more beep. They car will run for 10 min. with out you putting the key in the start position. If you get in the car and dont do that and press the brake or gas it kills the car. It works from about 1200 ft away. You can also set your a/c or heat at the temp. you want and it will be on. My dealer installed it at the dealer by there service tech. Its also covered by the Mopar service contract!!
2MCHPSI 11-13-2006, 08:39 PM Have them change the runtime to 15 minutes, or do it yourself. 10 minutes isn't usually enough time to get the interior the right temp.
saywhat 11-13-2006, 08:47 PM I have never had a problem with the amount of run time. I start it about 2 or 3 minutes before going outside and the car is nice and cool !! Thats in Calif. When the temp has been around 90 to 100 out here in the summer!
2MCHPSI 11-13-2006, 09:06 PM Cooling is not the problem. It takes longer than 10 minutes to "warm" the engine up to operating temp when it's 2 degress outside however and just a bit longer to make the insides "nice."
Clueless 11-13-2006, 09:53 PM Over the years I’ve had remote starts on almost all of my cars (except in a stick shift car). LOVE THIS GADGET. Never had a real problem, BUT I would gladly pay an extra $100 for the remote start system that came from the factory (or at least from the dealer). If anything ever goes wrong you can take it back and not think twice about the dealer complaining that it’s the remote start that’s causing a problem rather than something else in the car. I’ve had that happen to a friend of mine with a GMC. He was told that it’s not something the dealer can cover under warranty because remote start installer did something wrong. Needless to say the problem had nothing to do with the remote starter. Another dealer was able to diagnose the problem correctly. Another friend with a 06 Lexus GS was told by the dealer that even though it’s available for that car, dealer will not install it for him. Same was said by a Jaguar dealer to another friend with an 06 XJR.
All I can say is get it from the dealer, if you can. Every time!
2MCHPSI 11-13-2006, 11:14 PM Unfortunatly, *MOST* dealership mechanics do not know how to properly install Remote Start/Security Systems.
Find someone MECP certified (preferably First Class or higher) and have them do the install.
GodfatherSRT8 11-14-2006, 06:41 AM My dealership installed a free remote start on my truck after the 07 came out since they had told me nothing would be different between the 06 and the 07. I tired *****ing about the back up camera too, but they refused.

Jeeezz man, does it work? Only reason I ask is cause Luan said dealership mechanics didn't know how to properly install them....
GodfatherSRT8 11-14-2006, 09:54 AM Works perfectly. I think my dealer had an outside shop do the install.
saywhat 11-14-2006, 10:22 AM My dealer installed it in July and I never have had any problems.
2MCHPSI 11-14-2006, 10:24 AM I added "MOST" to my original post, because I shouldn't genealize, but sadly, it's true. We have dealerships contact us for Remote Start/Security System installs all the time, because you guessed it, none of their mechanics or "techs" know the first thing about how to install one.

Luan....just bustin man....you have some great posts here...good stuff to date.
Meant to be humorous. Hope I didn't pi** ya off.:) :)
Ink Pump 11-14-2006, 02:02 PM I have the factory installed remote start on my 2007. I've never had one before but already I love it. I start the car before leaving the house and the office. Its really cool when you leave a place late at night and you start it when people are in the parking lot. The other thing is it works at up to 150 ft from the vehicle.

I agree, that's why my dealer uses an outside custom stereo shop to do there remote installs. They also recomend the aftermarket units that are hundreds less expensive. The Mopar unit is made by (insert comp. name) then labeled Mopar.

Not at all, I just didn't want to offend any Dealership Techs who may actually know what they are doing, that may be members here.
