: Discrepancy in published track times of the SRT8 vs mine
FastJeepSRT8 11-12-2006, 01:33 AM I've read two articles so far from magazines that have road tested the Jeep SRT8. Car and Driver claimed 4.5 sec to 60 and 13.2 in the 1/4. Road and track compared it to 5 other high performance SUV's including the Porche Cayenne Turbo and claimed the SRT8 was the new bad-ass SUV and that "In outright speed, it flat spanked every vehicle here" with a 4.6 sec to 60 and a 13.2 1/4. With that said I've done the best I can with a stop watch and my right foot and the results have been anywhere from 4.74 sec to 5.03 sec. Understanding that my reaction time and the accuracy of my speedometer play a big part in my results, shouldn't I get a little closer to 4.5 sec? Is my Jeep a bit sluggish or am I just not getting good results given my questionable testing method? I've considered getting a GTECH dash mount dyno which I'm sure would give me better results. Any thoughts from others who have timed their SRT's? I'd love to hear what other's are getting from their SRT's.
Sounds like human error with the stop watch and not many people here have a lot of confidence in the magazine stats. 1/10th of a second isn't much when pushing a stop watch button.

Now please change your screen name to "AverageJeepSRT8" ASAP.
Actually it's all about test procedures & equipment utilized. Some mags. post actual times, some post "corrected" times (using altitude, barometer readings & other factors to figure the expected times), some use a 1-Second rollout on their acceleration tests, some magazines will drop the clutch @ WOT & speed shift the test vehicles while others will launch @ 1000-1500 rpm & shift normally. The best you can hope for in comparing times is to use tests from the same magazine & hopefully tested at the same track on the same day. Otherwise it's a crapshoot.
waydennis 11-12-2006, 03:31 PM Many factors are involved as others have mentioned, temp and break in have been two factors I have seen a great change in my times.
I have a GTech and have watched my times drop from 4.8 to 4.2 as the engine breaks in and the temps drop. Now I get constant 4.5's with a temp of 80 degrees and 4.2 if a cold front pushes down and drops temps to the low 60's.
jms935 11-12-2006, 03:52 PM waydennis, Is yours stock? 4.2 sounds faster than any numbers I have seen stock.

How do you like that GTech? Would you say it's worth the $200 bucks it costs? I'd like to get one before I start making mods so I can measure the results better. And yea 4.2 sounds really fast how many miles do you have? Thanks for the feedback.

Darkside 11-12-2006, 07:01 PM Best bet is to actually take it to the track. The stopwatch will allow for too much human error. Even the Gtech is very easy to mess up. If its not on a perfectly level road it will give inaccurate results.
waydennis 11-12-2006, 07:37 PM I now have just short of 7K on the truck. I bought the GTech for $100 off ebay, and would have gladly paid full price for its functionality. Judging mods and engine break-in changes were exactly why I bought it.
I agree with the error factor in the above post, both stop watch and GTech. I am sure that my GTech has some base error, but it seems to be consistent in its readings. While I did not perform a full Six Sigma Gauge R&R, I have made multiple runs over the same stretch. I look at the delta's for the same stretch of road at near same conditions. I was amazed at the readings were so consistent.
My true 0-60 may not be 4.2, but it has been slowly dropping since I bought the GTech at 3K miles. I look at the delta's for the same stretch of road at near same conditions.
On the same section of road, I have 15 runs around at 4.80 when the truck had between 3K-4K miles. I now have 10 runs around 4.5 now with 6+K miles.
I have 4 runs around 4.2 (best was 4.17) which only occurs when the morning temp is around 60 degrees (which does not happen often in South Florida). Unfortunately, these were not on the same stretch where most measurements have occurred. They were on other roads where I normally get 4.5's with temps in the lower 80's.
During the same 3-6K period, I have made it to the local track twice. All my first visit runs were around 13.8 with 2900 miles and recently had consistent 13.5's with 6K. Weather was about the same both nights with temps in the lower 80's...
Here's a vid of the last trip...

FastJeepSRT8 11-12-2006, 10:30 PM Great feedback Dennis thanks! It's encouraging to know that my times should improve as the engine breaks in. I expected that would happen I just didn't know how long it might take. I'd have to say by the few stoplight matchups I've had with my Jeep that I'm running slightly better than my stop watch is telling me. I definitley want to pick up that GTech. It's on my Christmas list so hopefuly the wife has been paying attention.

You should really take it to the track and test it out. And don't worry, the Jeeps gets faster with more miles on it. We have one guy at the blue site who got a 12.8 1/4 run, completely stock, at his last track meet. The Jeeps are only starting to open up.
FastJeepSRT8 11-12-2006, 10:51 PM I keep hearing about the blue site. Please pardon my ignorance but what is it and can someone post a link?

I will get the Gtech when the handheld tuner is out. So I may never have a Gtech?
Until then my ASStech tells me that my heep does 0-60 in 2.5sec... :D

I hear Hypertech makes a good tunner called the Hyperpac. I checked, nothing for our Jeeps yet. They run between $600 and $800. The tunners make me nervous though. I'm not convinced yet that it's a good idea to mess with the factory setting we got from SRT.
