: Oil Change every 6K miles??
split2112 11-07-2006, 10:54 AM Just took my GCSRT8 in for its third oil change...im at almost 9K miles on it.
The technician or whatever the guy was supposed to be told me that I didnt need to take it in every 3K miles...he said that since it was Synthetic i could take it in every 6000. Is this legit?...He caught me off guard as I am definitely not used to a dealership trying to actually save me money....he then went on to charge me $95 for the oil change and check up....lame
danman_s 11-07-2006, 11:03 AM Out of habit I change my oil at 5000 km (3000 miles) anyhow. It doesn't hurt the vehicle, and I'd rather be on the safe side. I've just hit 10000 km and my oil is pitch black so I don't want to drive that much without an asap oil change anyhow.
Synthetic oil won't break down like mineral oil anyhow so it technically can go for alot longer, the problem is that all the crap is still collecting in the oil and in the filter.

ditto that, keeping the oil clean has it's own rewards. I've also been told with synthetic you can stretch it to 6,000 miles but have always changed it at 3,000 ... so far, it has never come out looking overly pretty
split2112 11-07-2006, 11:08 AM those were my thoughts exactly...better safe than sorry
but freakin $95 worth of safe...haha
jayeepee 11-07-2006, 11:15 AM Do it yourself for around $40 or $45, Mobil 1 0W40 is maybe $4.50 per quart at Wal Mart and a good filter should be $10 or less. The oil filter drip guard that they installed on our JGC SRT8's is very good at keeping the used oil off of your arms! I wish my old JGC 5.9 Limited had that :(
shodanusmc 11-07-2006, 01:17 PM Mercedes and BMW's use Mobil 1 and the recommended interval is 12 months/ 12K miles. I think if you go 6 mo/6K miles you will be fine, as long as it is in the Manual. Todays oils are a lot better than the old Dino Oil from years ago. But, whatever makes you happy. I change my E55 every 6 months, and my Wifes BMW every year..as she puts on only 9k a year.
soccerjunky 11-07-2006, 01:27 PM my old x5 came with synthetic from the get go... recomended interval change was 15,ooo. However bmw as part of the sale offered free service to 50,000 miles.. of course when i took it in for a 60,000mile service they wanted close to $600. mmmmmmmmmm. So basically u got 3 free oil changes then when it's u're turn to pay they change everything. mmmmmmmmm
Sheri'SRT8 11-07-2006, 02:01 PM I've been using Redline synthetic in all of the cars. The Mustang GT only gets about 3,000 miles per year on it, so it gets changed every February.
Going 6,000 per change should be no problem at all.
I've also come across a great research study on oil filters. Check it out:

There is more information here than you will ever need to know.

BMW service is damn expensive when not under warranty. That is why, my wifes 4.4 X% will be gone before the warranty runs out. Its an 06, and the first month we had it, the fuel Pump, and all 8 injectors were replaced. Runs terrific now. Great riding vehicle. Looking at the brake dust it puts out, I am sure the pads will be covered by them also.
I guess I am old school and and I cring at the thought of 1 year intervals....but if they are confident of no engine damage and sludge, what can I say. I will change the jeeps at 6 months or 6K regardless.
soccerjunky 11-07-2006, 06:02 PM shodanusmc - if u want dust free pads go with axxis deluxe - best pad i put on any vehicle, quiet , sticky and no dust
jlandbl 11-07-2006, 07:00 PM I've decided to go middle of the road, 4,500 miles. My first (done) and second oil change are free. After that, I will do it myself.
matts 11-08-2006, 01:22 PM i've been running synthetic in my p/u for about 3 years now. i always change mine about 6000. it still looks clean too (even though it has no bearing on if the oil is bad or not). at first i had my issues of waiting that long, but after a couple of oil changes i just figured screw it, if everyone is so confident about it guess i'll give it a chance. haven't had any regrets so far
i change my own oil because then i know it's done right. one time i had someone install a oil filter on my truck and it didn't even have the rubber ring on the top. needless to say i told them to change it, do it right, and i've never went back there.
