: Export Model - Skinny Tire Issue
jrduavit 06-01-2008, 05:05 PM I was wondering if anyone has made the move to get his 245/45/20 wheel/tire configuration up to US specs.
I took a look recently and there seems to be space back there but not much. I'm hoping someone can assist the group with a success story of bolting on a set of 9" front and 10" rear wheels and tires.
Hope you can help...

MIKE SRT8 06-01-2008, 05:17 PM The export 08's come with the 9" front & 10" rears, so there should'nt be an issue with fitment. The price for wheels & tires won't be cheap though!:(
jrduavit 06-01-2008, 05:20 PM Shoots...mine is an '07. Would a US spec set bolt on to my export model? I spent good money on this ride and it has to look right :)
MIKE SRT8 06-01-2008, 05:28 PM I would think so, as I have seen a post on another forum where a UK member imported some from the US on an 06 model. I would check though before buying any just in case there are issues with the fitment!
jrduavit 06-01-2008, 06:47 PM Appreciate the input Mike. I've been googling around to no avail. You are absolutely right. It would be a shame to input a wheel and tire package only to have it rub against the Bilsteins.
I did see a post on the forum though where some guys upgraded the tires to 275/40/20s on the existing rims which may be the best way to go. I can go 255/45/20 up front and 275/40/20 out back. What do you think?

I think thats going to push you outside the 5% the engineers say is allowed for the diameter differences. Your running the risk of damaging the drive components. Tires need to be the same size all the way around.

jrduavit 06-02-2008, 02:01 AM Duly Noted.
Am going by the US specs of 255/45/20 in front and 285/40/20 in the rear. Again, I am opting for 275/40/20s in the rear because other guys in the forum have done so with the export model's 8.5" rim.
Any suggestions? Am open to anything.
brianm 06-02-2008, 06:41 AM i have priced 275/40/20 , for the rear of my truck , do you guys think it would cause any problems to do so??
jrduavit 06-02-2008, 08:11 AM one of the guys has that sized tire all around so i'm guessing it's all right.
NitroCrzy 06-02-2008, 01:25 PM you have to remember the guys in the states have different width wheels which allows them to go with different sizes. If your using the export with all skinny's... they all need to be the same size tire to keep the overall diameter within spec....
MARK16 06-03-2008, 01:57 AM Do an Advanced Search on my username 'MARK16' and the keyword 'Tyres' - lots of info here. On both my tyres and other UK owners.

brianm 06-03-2008, 05:24 AM mark , would i need to change all four tyres as id just like to fatten up the back 2??
MARK16 06-03-2008, 06:32 AM You need to keep the diameters between the front and the back as close as possible - otherwise you will knacker the 4wd system. If you want to go wider at the back try 275/40's (another UK owner has used these all round) - Bridgestone do a run-flat in this option. 275 are about as wide as you can go.
See
http://www.tyretraders.com/Tyrecalculator/
and
http://www.tyretraders.com/SearchType/Default.aspx?Width=275&Ratio=40&Rim=20
Hope this helps.

medisrt 06-09-2008, 02:23 PM I don't think there is a difference in the eu models and the us models. I can hardly imagine that you couldn't fit the American tires on a Eu model. I have a parallel imported US model and compared it with the EU model but except for the front and rear lights and some small leather strips, the cars are identical. As I said already I do not understand why they change tires for Europe. The only thing I can not get fixed, is the american radio. A european radio does NOT work in a US model. Tried to replace it.
medisrt 06-09-2008, 03:18 PM I started calculating some diameters of wheels to see what the differences are in between the different tires
245/45/20 =728,5 mm
255/45/20 =737,5 mm
275/40/20 =728 mm
285/40/20 =736 mm
315/35/20 =728,5 mm
so you see that the 255/285 set up has a difference of 1,5mm diameter between front and rear. this is off course nothing because the difference can be higher with the same tires and just a difference in wear.
If you put 275/40/20 instead of 245/45/20 you can not ruin your transfer case because the difference is 0,06%!!
also a 275 315 set up has less difference then the stock setup.
aplatero1984 06-09-2008, 06:53 PM skinny tires suck!

a 275/315 set up would be great but those may not fit our 8.5in rims. so the question again rises: is the bolt pattern of (5 x 127) the US 9" front 10" rear
the same as our EU models?
NitroCrzy 06-10-2008, 04:20 AM The bolt pattern is exactly the same.....
I bought my extra set of wheels and tires off someone in the States. The only issue I discovered after the fact is the TPMS is a different frequency.

Thanks for sharing, Nitro. Though a US spec wheel and tire package aint exactly cheap is in, in my mind, an essential "mod" for us all.
Did you resolve the TPMS problem?

Yes... the problem was fixed by buying the sensors here locally. I bought 4 new sensor for around US$145.
It was a bit aggravating having to troubleshoot the problem myself... Thank god for these forums!

Post up some pics when you get them installed. Startech has some neat stuff.
DubaiSRT 06-13-2008, 06:08 PM I have an 07. I came with 245/45/20s. Iv upgraded them to 275/40/20s.
They perform perfectly. Old export models can go with it.
Im thinking of buying 30mm spacers and custom-making a fender kit to make the car look wider...any suggestion?
jrduavit 06-14-2008, 08:16 AM Check out this site, guys. US spec wheels for $350/pc. Why so cheap?
DubaiDrive 06-16-2008, 12:36 PM Just upgrade to 275's all round if you have a 06 or 07. It won't look as wide as other 275's due to the rim just about taking the 275. If that makes any sense, lol.
It's a huge improvement over the dreadful 245's though..

Not the best pic, but gives an idea I hope.
NitroCrzy 06-17-2008, 12:12 AM Still too skinny.... try going to US spec's :)

jrduavit 06-17-2008, 06:54 AM Thanks for the telling pic. I had my doubts of whether or not our export models could fit the bigger wheel/tire package but your pic put all my doubts to rest.
I'll place an order for US spec shoes ASAP. Now if the price of gas could somehow go south we'd all be in GC heaven. LOL
OMSRT8 06-26-2008, 07:03 AM I'm not sure If I follow this, but I got my 08 few months ago with 255 front n 285 rear. I'm talking about gulf specs and the car was made in Austria! ofcourse, FULLY Loaded!!
But paid way higher then what its in US. (around $52,500)

If your vehicle is an 08 model year it should have the wider wheels & tyres as the US models. The UK Jeep website shows in the tech details 9" front & 10" rear. These are built in Austria too.

You are lucky to have waited a year. Though it came out more expensive at least you have the right set up in the 9 and 10 inch rims. To cut costs, Chrysler had us 07s and down wear those skinny wheels. Naturally the complaints came in.
Having said that I was successful in acquiring a new set of wheels at 255/285. They will come in a months time. Will post pics for the group...
jrduavit 08-12-2008, 03:27 AM My wheel and tire package finally came in. Brought them to be mounted and balanced at our local dealership in Manila and they bolted on in an hour though some tweaking had to be done to the computer.
Apparently the change in diameter 'confused' the computer which resulted in screwy timing. The transmission also refused to downshift because of it. The good news is the technician simply went online to get the 08 numbers, reeducated the chip, and boom!
The car looks great. It rides better. And sits a tad higher...will post some pics as soon as I get this puppy cleaned up.
Thanks for all the input from the group :)

Hi, where abouts from Manila are you? I was born there and lived there for a few years. Good luck with your truck

Am here in the city...Metro Manila. Lots of nice cars to go with the traffic. Actually moved back from Hawaii last year after some 16yrs. Enjoyed a 300C SRT8 for a year and a half and opted for the GC here for obvious reasons.
Not many places to open up the car unlike the US but the cops are much nicer especially around meal time...:)
