: Best Trailer Hitch Option?

I know several people are going to insist I go search the past threads and I have done that. At best, that just got confusing. I am looking at a 2006 and must have a trailer hitch. What has turned out to be the best way to do that?

The Curt MFG. hitch is good, but is only rated at 2000 pounds I believe.

I built a custom one back in the beginning of 06 before anything was out yet. It can easily hold 4000 pounds.

I have the Curt hitch and I have the mopar srt hitch on now. The Curt is the easiest to install, maybe 20 minutes. You must keep the exhaust stock and is rated for 1500#. I and at least one other that i know of have towed more. The Mopar hitch(3500#) takes more work to put on. You need to remove the bumper and the hanger that your exhaust is on now. I am new the the forum and appreciate all the information. I am looking to get the Mopar Hitch, but my dealer is claiming there is no such item.

Does anyone know the part number?

Welcome to the site. I assume you bought an 08?
Anyway, my 07 box has 1-82210037AB on it. Try that.
Also, there is a mopar accessories site that you can search up on this forum that will tell you some stuff about it. PM me if you need to know more.

Here it is way cheaper than the dealer will sell it to you for!

...or you can go custom and haul a bunch of weight and never see the hitch when you are not using it...

Welcome. Dustin is right the Curt is only rated at 2000 lbs. but i've got it on mine and I tow around 3900 lbs a few times a week with it. Only took about 30 min. to install, clean as you could ask for. You can't see it unless you're looking for it when the receiver isn't in.

Cool sounds like you can TOW a heck of a lot more than the 2000 lbs that they state. My question is.... the tongue weight is apparently only 200 lbs. I wish to carry 4 bicycles on this and was told that it is max 2 only. They said that 4 bikes and the rack would be too much downward force on the tongue and would cause it to fail. Truth or BS?

This is a 1 1/4" opening only right?

Ok I was looking for a hitch that can handle a decent amount of weight but don't ruin the beautiful looks and can be installed with the stock exhaust. From what I can see in the threads is I pretty much have 3 options. Correct me if I am wrong as I am a new owner of a 06 Black GC SRT8 and new to this forum. FYI I did use the search...

Option #1- Have a custom hitch made, but appears can be pretty expensive.

Optiion #2- The Curt MFG hitch, No price listed on Curt MFG web site. I never saw any parts numbers but I am assuming this would be part number 13251 (this may be the wrong part number as I don't see anything about SRT on the Curt MFG website) located at http://www.curtmfg.com/index.cfm?event=hitch

Option #3- The Mopar hitch, Retail Price: $129.00 Online Price: $109.80 I never saw any parts numbers but I am assuming this would be part number 82210037AB located at http://www.moparsupercenter.com/grand-cherokee-srt-8-hitch-receiver82210037ab.html

Addition info. - From what I can see the Curt hitch can be installed with the orginal exhaust and is a class 3 hitch but the Mopar hitch receiver is rated as a class 2. At the time of the mopar hitch installation a Mopar unique exhaust system is required part number 82211495 Retail Price: $679.00 Online Price: $610.80. Additionally the 2007-2008models require a seperate trailer tow wiring harness (4-way).

Thanks for any responses that might help me find what I am looking for at a decent price. I like the way the mopar hitch looks but I would really like a class 3 Hitch while still using the stock exhaust and the Mopar is a class 2.

First off the Curt hitch is a class 1 rated for 1500#. The mopar hitch does not need to buy the extra exhaust parts and is rated for 3500#. If you really did search you would know this. If you want a class III hitch you will need to do something custom or you can buy the reg GC hitch and do a little cutting of your bumper and welding of the exhaust supports.

I agree, it really all depends on two things...

1. How much do you want to be able to tow
2. How descrete do you want the receiver.

First figure out your max weight: 1500, 3500, 5000ish plus.
Then after you determine that:
1500: Curt, hidden, cheap, discrete
3500: SRT hitch (no need for exhaust) but you will see the receiver above the exhaust all the time
5000+: Normal GC hitch, must cut hole in bumper, but a plug can hide it relatively ok OR Custum hitch which will hide the receiver and tow a lot but like others have said can be quite $$$. To me, i hardly ever tow, maybe once or twice a year for this reason it was well worth the money to me to hide the receiver and have it look great 100% of the time. If i towed often and didnt have the money i would get the normal GC. Then again, if i towed ALL the time, like more than twice a month i would have gotten a TBSS probably.:D

Awsome, thanks guys you both gave me excatly what I was looking for. I have decided I am going to go with the Mopar due to the higher towing capacity and the fact that I don't need to spend extra money on extra exhaust parts and I don't have to cut the bumper. I wish I could hide it like the Curt but I can deal with that...

If you have any questions about the mopar, let me know.
