Hello,

I just spent $490.00 on a 9006 / HB4 6000k HID Conversion kit for my 2006 JGC SRT8; I had a local business install the kit this afternoon; as I was leaving the parking lot, I checked the lights; only one side came on; in order for both left/right lights to work, I had to turn the lights on/off a few times. The technician was puzzled; any suggestions????? he charged me $137 for the install. He stated that he would try calling xenondepot.com tomorrow. Please help.

thanks,
Dr. Patel

I had many hid light kits and it sounds to me like its a bad bulb.It happens when the bulb gets old,I know its brand new but anything is possible.Mine would do the same thing ,I would turn it on and off several times until it would stay on flickering in between.I would try takeing the bulb out on the side that stays on all the time and install it on the other side to see if it stays on, if it stays on its the bulb.If that dont work it can be your (starter) if your kit has one, then you have your ballast, usually if its the starter or ballast you get no light.Try swapping the bulbs first.Good luck!

The hid system needs to have a relay system also. A direct plug and play ballast and bubl to the left and right side wont cut it. You'll get flickering random one light shut offs etc, - something about the voltage in the car not being constant. - check it out its in the search somewhere.

I also have the same situation with my Philips HID kit, I took it back to the installer couple of days after I noticed it and he said that is normal on certain cars where the wiring to that light not coming on is the farthest from the battery, it has to do with the wire length he said.
He showed me his DENALI, and it did the same thing.
Normally after I get in and turn the lights ON manually, both work fine.
Is yours also the side farthest from the battery?
I would also like to know if it's happening to other under this situation.
Initially I thought that it had to do with the lights coming ON when you unlock the doors, maybe it has something to do with that also.

To start a HID kit it takes a lot of energy. So if you turn the HIDs on before you start the car they will work fine, but when the car is on and you try to turn them on they will most likely flicker (in some cases, if you have a not so great system) FYI, my kits DO NOT flicker and I spent $200 on them. You simply need a relay. You better get one installed because the flicker is not good for the bulbs at all.

I have been very seriously considering this mod for some time now, but I am discouraged by all of the problems individuals are having. Xenondepot's site states " ...The harness provided will include upgraded fuses and relays to ensure you do not draw a higher current from your stock harness than it was designed to provide..." Is there a problem with the relays? What seems to be the issue, as it does not appear to be bulb related. Has anyone used these kits successfully and problem free? TIA for any info/suggestions.

Night Prowler, I am confused as to your question. If you MUST have relays you can get them. I can't speak for any other Grand Cherokee except mine. I DID NOT install a relay kit and my HIDs work fine. Usually the ONLY problems that comes with installing HID's are either the flicker/strobe effect and the one bulb on one bulb off problem. BOTH should be fixed with the relay kit. So if you buy a HID kit with available relay's EVERYTHING will work fine. Hope this helps!

Since you are a doctor and all I'm sure you do not care, but you got ripped the **** off on that HID install. It's a simple 1 minute (literally) do it yourself install mod.

Hey folks,

I appreciate all the replies; I just dropped the Jeep off again to the installer of the HIDs; he has been in contact with Steve over at Xenondepot. The bulbs do not flicker, but the one bulb on, one off problem as Street WK mentioned. The lights are beautiful when they are on. Oh by the way, Street WK, I am good at extracting teeth, not installing HID lights... so paying the $137 for installation is fine with me. You win some, you lose some... part of life. Enjoy!!

thanks again gang,

Jeet

Hey, I got the whole kit relays, wiring harness, the whole deal, I got no flikering on mine, just the one that sometimes (not all the time) stays off.
So what this guy told me sound right to you, about being the one farthest from the battery?

actually, I really don't know; hopefully this afternoon, I will have an answer for you when I go pick the Jeep up.

So what this guy told me sound right to you, about being the one farthest from the battery?I installed HID's on my GC SRT8 in Feb. using a "Plug & Play" kit & while both lights came on properly they flickered & generally acted goofy when cutting off. Once I ran a fused properly-sized power wire from the battery & installed relays all has been perfect. The small wires that run to the factory bulbs cannot carry the load associated with start up of an HID ballast/bulb reliably. It might work a little while but will eventually cause bulb or ballast failure due to the voltage drop at start up. While installing relays using the factory wiring will probably eliminate the flickering it won't solve the problem, you'll need to run a 10 or 12 gauge wire to each ballast, through the relay, to SOLVE any present or future problems.
PS: Wiring, relays the HID kit, etc. will take 30-45 minutes to install but in the end it will be right & will work as reliably as any factory lighting.

Dr. Patel, I did not mean to offend you. If I did, sorry.

By the way, do you have family in South Carolina?

Hey Street WK,

no offense taken; this is a great website; useful info for SRT8 owners. I do not have any family in SC; Patel is like Smith...very common last name.

You definatly need to run a separate power line to the battery. This takes the load off of your stock wiring. Go purchase a separate 9006 wire harness. I think xenondepot sells them.
Usually good hid kits include this. In any case after this is upgraded your lights should be free of any problems.

Mine did included it...!
This kit came with everything.
But that power line is longer to get to the battery, he ranned it all the way around the firewall back to the battery.
Shoul he had shortened the length and run it through the front, more direct?

what about your ground? each headlight should have a ground. Length of the power wire just doesn't seem like the problem. If you don't have proper ground then all sorts of wierd electrical problems will surface.

Shoul he had shortened the length and run it through the front, more direct?I ran the power to the passenger ballast along the front myself but if the wire is properly sized the extra 2-3 feet will not make any difference. The problem is something else, not a few extra feet of wire.

Thanks guys...
I'll be bringing it back for them to recheck as per your advice.

I plan on using an aftermarket light harness such as Carsound. I used them on my last jeep and they worked great. It takes power straight from the battery instead of through the wire harness. I had HID's on my last jeep and had no problems.

The kits are usually around $50, you can then just plug and play into the kit instead of the stock harness.
