Strange thing happened to me today. I didn't use the keyless entry to unlock the door when I got into the beast today, and the darn alarm goes off after I used the key to unlock the door. Interesting feature.......

At least my rear fog lights work.....

I guess it would be bad if the battery in your key/remote went dead, how would you shut off the alarm?

this happened to my buddy the other night (he has a F150 Harley edition with an aftermarket Viper alarm). his battery went dead on the remote and we opened the door with the key... and the damn alarm went off for about 20 mins

we finally got 1 good transmission off from the remote after we were inside the truck (i guess the battery was really weak). what a pain in the ass though

alarms are supposed to work like that! The car doesn't know the difference between you using the key in the door and a thief using a screwdriver, or reaching in an open window to unlock and open the door.

If this happens with a factory alarm you usually just have to start the engine, but with an aftermarket alarm sometimes the only thing you can do (aside from unplugging the alarm or disconnecting the battery) is enter a code sequence using the valet button.

Battery is fine. For some reason the way they setup the system you have to use the keyless entry button to disable the alarm before using your key to unlock the door. I suspect if I stick the key in the ignition after setting off the alarm it'd go off if my key battery does go dead but find this a very strange feature.

That makes sense! Never gave it much thought. I'd prefer an RFID type solution that let the vehicle know the key was used to unlock the door. BMW and some others use this to even allow the cars to be started without having to even stick the key in.... just have to have the key on you.

My 2002 Durango did the same. Always to my wife who cursed the truck. Only once to me... As I was heading to trade it in on my SRT8...

Without a sensor in the door to pick up the trnsponder in your key the system has no way to tell if it is the key unlocking the door or a coat hanger. The alarm will go off when you start it with the correct key, and even if your remote battery dies it will still pick up the key, the transponder for the sentry key does not use battery power it is excited by a signal from the skreem antennae around the ignition cylinder.

I have a viper alarm on my Murano, and when the battery goes dead in the remote, you have to use the key (setting off the alarm), get in, close the door, put the key in the ignition and turn to ON, then press the valet button.

But the battery annoys you with warnings for a couple days before the battery goes dead, so it shouldn't happen.
