: What's This?
tommyg 10-22-2006, 11:32 AM Purchased used Black GCSRT 5 weeks ago, and cant figure this out. Hopefully someone can identify what this is attached to the bottom of my rear bumper. It has one wire to it coming from inside the bumper. I also have a small blue led light on my dashboard hood. Maybe it's part of an alarm or motion sensor system?
Thanks for your help.
TXBLU 10-22-2006, 11:49 AM Looks like a Laser jammer transceiver to me.
TRAINER 10-22-2006, 12:00 PM You have a radar detector in your car, or "used" to. My guess is the previous owner had on intalled and then removed it before selling it and left some parts behind..
tommyg 10-22-2006, 03:19 PM Thank you.
Did a search for laser jammers, and it appears identical to the rear of the Escort jammer system. I use a solo 2 detector, but dont know anything about jammers. I'll check em out, but at $500...ouch.
lincoln 10-22-2006, 10:04 PM Yep, it's an Escort LIDAR jammer sensor/emitter...but it couldn't be in a worse location...it needs to be withing 18" of the license plate (and nearer is better). Mine is going to be mounted under the lip just to the left of the rear hatch release as to not be blocking the light (opposite the window button). It's intended to be mounted to the screws that hold the plate on but on the jeep, using the top holes which might look OK would block access to the handle and using the bottom holes would just be horrible looking. It's hardly noticable on my the top holes of the plate on my SL.
GINTER 10-23-2006, 06:04 AM Remember, that radar (lidar) jammers are illegal (in the whole country), and you could do up to 1 year for owning one. LASER jammers are legal, in all but 5 states (do a search).
And a $500 unit won't do much to stop a radar. There is a site dedicated to radar jamming (forgot the URL), and they list "effective" jammers at $2,500+ (up to $5,000.). It's run by a former state trooper who did tests on all the available active and passive jamming systems. BTW, passive is completely worthless.
Good luck.
Souinds like some one doesn't like radar detectors LOL

LIDAR is Laser!!! Those jammers are LEGAL in all but a few states. RADAR jamming is illegal at the federal level. What is installed on the Jeep in question is legal if he doesn't live in one of the 5, or so, states that have laws against them.
jms935 10-23-2006, 05:28 PM What are the states that don't allow laser jamming?
lincoln 10-23-2006, 07:14 PM The ones I know are MN, VA, UT, OK, NB, and CA. For me OK is the only one I might drive into and I doubt I would worry about it too much. It's very very difficult for Johnny Law to tell the difference between being jammed and just not getting a good reflection.

Misquote. I was writing quickly. LIDAR is laser, correct. Legal in all but 5 states (listed above). RADAR is illegal.
Thanks for the correction.
