: Jeep on a road trip
Untouchable 04-27-2008, 08:25 AM I am faced with driving from long island to cincinnati (600 miles) for a cousin's wedding. My wife refuses to take the beater camry so I have a few options:
1.shell out money for a sh!t rental on the long weekend
2.find something wrong with the jeep to get a loaner for the weekend
3.take the jeep and look forward to buying around 100 gallons of premium during the trip, not to mention any wear/'tear and run ins with the law
any of you guys road trip the jeep and what would you do?
Crookster777 04-27-2008, 08:40 AM Take the beast on a road trip. Have fun, yeah gas prices suck but so what. Enjoy the open road and dont let the wife drive. I would suggest leaving like at 1 am. No one on the road.

we recently drove from Upstate SC to Orlando FL in the Jeep. Averaged about 90 MPH and about 14.8 MPG. Had to fill up twice on the way and another time when we got there just to get to the hotel... same thing on the way back. Pretty much could have planned ahead and flown for cheaper, but I love to drive this thing, so it was fine. Even so, next time we'll probably drive as far as the airport though. I'd go the "something is wrong w/ the Jeep" route, or fly.
Rick G 04-27-2008, 12:24 PM I would go with #1 and get a rental. We have already booked a rental for 2 vacation trips this summer.
Benefits:
Keep miles off the Jeep.
Park anywhere and not constantly worry if the Jeep is safe.
Our rental will be getting 30 mpg.....money saved versus the Jeep will pay for 2 nights hotel.
If you get a flat and it is a Sunday or any other day actually you will be in for an ordeal and waste valuable vacation time.........With the rental you just change the tire yourself or call them for repair or new car.
I will be enjoying my vacation getting 30 mpg and knowing the Jeep is safe at home in the garage. :D
Btw, we rented from Enterprise and paid $50.00 for the whole weekend.
Myself, the lovely Mrs. Rick G, and Roxy will be cruising in a 2008 Chevy Aveo :o that gets 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. :p
Untouchable 04-27-2008, 12:53 PM how did you get it so cheap from enterprise?
I am actually on their black list from an incident a few years back (good but long story)
Rick G 04-27-2008, 01:00 PM Weekend special........Friday morning to Monday morning.

08srt8Calgary 04-27-2008, 01:03 PM I've done two big road trips. Even though its a blast to drive, long drives are still long drives. I will be driving 15 miles to the airport and flying out in june compared to putting more miles on the jeep, and most of all- putting less hours on me. 10hr drive- vs 1hr flight and 9hrs of quality drinking. hhhhmmm.

plus. If you have 315s on the jeep, they won't fall off the rim on the road.
Rick G 04-27-2008, 01:09 PM The Chevy Aveo can fit inside of a 315. :D
promo718 04-27-2008, 02:04 PM i road tripped from nyc to miami beach, fl last summer and it was a blast as usual. i'm taking another drive down there this summer, and possibly going out to dallas as well.
some things to keep in mind if u decide to go:
1. keep an eye on the eng. oil & coolant level, both tend to need refills after some time of sustained 90+ speeds.
2. if you hit a lot of bugs, wash them off asap. if you leave them on, their acidic residue grabs onto the clearcoat and nothin short of compound will get them off.
Jred22 04-27-2008, 02:11 PM I've made the treck from Minneapolis, MN, to Oxford, OH, about 4 times, 750 mile trip. I've had no problems with the truck so far, and everything went smooth. I averaged about 85 mph on the highway. You'll probably have to fill up 2 or 3 times.
Third Honk 04-27-2008, 02:39 PM I went from Oklahoma City to Dallas for the auto show and loved every minute of being in the Jeep. Extremely comfortable and the attention it gets on the open road was fun too :D
Also I never got stiff from sitting in the car for too long due to the frequent gas stops :D
DevssrT 04-27-2008, 02:47 PM Just las weekend I drove from Long Island to Harrisonburg, VA (Went to visit a buddy that is graduating to JMU this year) with my cousin
...left at about 11 pm thursday night...got there at around 5 am Friday Morning....
Blast to drive....she feels alot more stable at higher speeds and not "jumpy/bumpy" like around town...Def use a Radar Detector (paid for itself 3 times on this trip) and make sure to not use them in states where they are illegal...As for Gas Mileage (we cruised down at about 80-85 majority of the time...averaged 16.5 MPG (only snorkel mod and K&N dropin filter...
If you do decide to do this road trip, def throw in a bottle of Chevron or Lucas Fuel Injector cleaner....and def fill hald up in NY and then Top off In Jersey....filled up 3 times the whole trip....never really letting it hit "E"....hope this helps!
the phantom 04-27-2008, 03:10 PM I just took a road trip to boston from Long Island last weekend. I would have loved to take the SRT-8 but I opted for the CTS-V. I have a few months on that lease left and she only has 13,000 out of 48,000 miles. I hate that car but I didnt wanna risk chips on the Jeep since I didnt get my 3M paint protection yet. When I got home and looked at the front of the caddy, I was happy I took it, there musta been a couple hundred dead bugs on the front fascia, not to mention the ones that have lodged themselves into the radiator. :D
mortimer 04-27-2008, 03:25 PM I'm getting ready to make a road trip to Denver, CO (~500 miles) in two weeks. No doubt in my mind I'll be taking the GCSRT8. I used to always get an economic rental for these trips to Denver, which I make 2-3 times per year. Not anymore -- phock the gas it's just too much fun to drive!
silverbullet 04-27-2008, 04:53 PM What ever you do, don't use the excuse that there is "something wrong with the Jeep"! If I tried that, the wife will say.... "what a positively useless POS the Jeep is!. Brand new and already broken? Should have gotten an MDX" LOL

Your killing me, i just rolled over 23000 on my 08!. Your jeep hates you for making it a garage queen. Im telling you guys drive it like you stole it and jeep will love you. Brake squeal only happens when the jeep doesn't get a bath, myGig has only flaked once and that was when i tried to connect the soon to ex-wife iPhone to it. I got a nail in the tire the same night i drove it home from the stealership, said nail is still in my tire :) nothing 4lb's of air a week can't fix. car doesn't smell new anymore but who cares it mostly smell like exhaust.
tommy25000 04-27-2008, 05:06 PM how did you get it so cheap from enterprise?

It's sunday night... lets hear the black list story
DJ Red Barron 04-27-2008, 05:58 PM I'm in the process of making a 1500-mile trip from my home in Louisiana to a job in North Dakota. I daily-drive my Jeep so miles don't bother me. I knew I was gonna rack them up when I bought it.
It's fun on long road trips. It's comfortable, too.
I would personally vote for drive the thing. Yea, gas prices suck. But I'm fairly sure if you can afford the Jeep, feeding it really isn't a problem. :D And besides, what's the point in having a 1:1 scale model in your garage? Drive that beast. It's what she's built for.
aplatero1984 04-27-2008, 06:11 PM I'd say drive the Jeep!!
Nabbs 04-27-2008, 06:33 PM It's a Jeep, it's meant to be a people hauler and to be on the big open road! And if you have to worry about parking this big thing, I don't know what to tell you! It's a JEEP, it's not a Ferrari! If it gets scratched, you can fix it -- no big deal. Or, you can live with it getting dinged up and just understand it's a JEEP!
I had to drive down to VA to Nat'l Foreign Affairs Center from NYC. I opted to drive rather then fly, and while I probablly won't do it again (traffic sucked) I am glad I did it! It was fun and this big black brick goes like a bat on the highway, and people love to see it.
So man up remove the sand from mangina and drive the damn thing! Oh, and if you are going to worry about paying for gas, sell this thing and buy a Prius!
SkyeHighSRT8 04-27-2008, 06:59 PM I live in Texas. I haven't worked in TX in over 5 years. Right now I am in CT. I have driven the jeep from VA to TX, TX to CT, next week it will be CT to VA, then VA to TX, 2 months at home, TX to FL, FL to MN, MN to CT, CT to WA,
I think ya'll get the point.
I have put 12,000 miles on the jeep in 6 months, mostely hwy.
The front is chipped up, it has a few scratches, WHATEVER. I wouldn't pick a different car to be stuck in 6 months a year away from home. I don't give a rat's @ss about gas prices. The jeep maked me happy.
The good news is, every mile get's me closer to new tires, drilled rotors, powdercoated wheels, etc.
I like the comment about the 1:1 scale model, Drive it!
