huh.. whats all this plastic sheeeet on the srt8 wheels? i was washing her yesterday and when i was cleaning the rims i saw it all crumbling off my rims... started coming off in big sections... im assuming its like that out of the factory for protection and in time all comes off.. just wondering... have had many cars with wheel finishes similar to these and never seen it before..

nope... just a hose..! but this plastic is so fragile and thin.. doesnt seem like its suppose to be on the rim... i didnt even touch the rim... the water pressure must have gotten underneath a part where there wasnt plastic and forced off more of the plastic..

What are you supposed to use? http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
Most wheel cleaners are marked SAFE FOR ALL WHEELS, if not then I would not use it. I use Meguiar's Quik Wheel, it is safe for daily use and works great.

rump....it sounds like your clearcoat is peeling off. Do you have pics?

Best thing for polished wheels is good ole fashion soap and water.

You're really not supposed to use wheel cleaner?....I use Blue Coral All wheel cleaner and no problems here....they look nice and shiny after a wash

These wheels do have a thin clearcoat to them. Some abraive of highly acid cleaners will cause it to stain or peel. There are a few choices dealer for warranty, strip and polish the aluminum on a a fairly regular basis, send them out for chrome.

could this really be covered if we still have a warranty? what will they have to do? send the wheel out? do I get a rental with that ? wouldnt mind doing a few whole shots with a jeep liberty or something in that class :)

:thinkerg: Just take the one rim off & use your spare for a few days while it's repaired. Oh wait . . . DOH! :lookaround:

ha...

well i had them checked out by a local dealer...

NO GO.. they cant do anything..

they told me they were all repaired once before and they are not covered under warranty.. I have to go back to the dealer who sold her originally...

how the heck do they know the wheels were repaired already?

sounds shady to me...

RickG, I have to agree with you - that stuff works pretty well and the Big Lots stores in our area are pushing it out for cheeeep.

Sorry this is happening to you. Like having scuffed shoes in a suit. Good luck with repairs.

A wheel shop can strip them and reclear them. Or chrome them.

This clear coat is a PITA. I'd rather just have the bare aluminum. Then you can just buff out any issues, polish it back up, and you are good.

My wheels are basically junk following a rough-ass Chicago winter. I need to have them stripped and chromed (or pc'ed black). They have pits and brown spots all over them. I know some of this is my fault, but how good of a wheel detailing job can I do when it's 0 degrees for like 2 months straight.... I figured I would deal with it in the spring.

The factory clear coat is actually not a clear coat, it is a clear powder coating. The untouched factory wheels will NOT loose their clear coat like that. Which means that your wheels were repaired at a wheel place before. At those places they strip your factory clear powder coat, repair the damage, polish, and then coat the wheel in a thin layer of cheap regular clear coat which is sub-par compared to the clear powder coating from the factory. The end result is the cheap clear coat eventually coming off by breaking off like plastic. This presents a real problem because the unprotected exposed metal surface is very suseptible to corrosion. Wheels that are repaired like this will never be the same as the factory unless they can somehow coat the wheels in the same factory powder coating, which is next to impossible as chrysler will not disclose the exact way the wheels are coated. They are basically useless once the factory clear powder coating has been stripped unless they are going to be chromed or powder coated a different color. Your best bet is to replace the wheel with an untouched original or if money is an issue send it to wheels america to get re-repaired. If money is not an issue you can always get them all powder coated black or chromed. But in a nutshell, repaired or re-manufactured wheels are CRAP! And that explains why they are so cheap compared to other options.

yep... i already see slight corrosion and its been a few weeks or so...!! insane... im wondering if i should go back to the place where i bought the truck used.. its bull****.. the fckin car is 2 years old and my wheels are going to rust? huh.? why would they have been repaired already? the truck has 15k on her... still a baby..

i need to find out why they where repaired... something is fishy

now its getting pretty bad... a few days go by and i can see the corrosion when im standing... i wondering if the dealer i bought them from could be held responsible... i cant see how im responsible for this when i still have another year on my warranty.. wouldnt this be considered a body integrity issue and fall under the corrosion warranty? I brought it to a dealer and they told me its been repaired already and that i should go the dealer from where the truck was originally sold... not sure how this makes a difference.. they should be fixing this issue...

any suggestions? its principle and i dont feel like i should pay a dime... its only happening on the left side wheels...
