: Z06 run-in
Blown-WK 04-07-2008, 09:16 PM So I am coming home about 20 minutes ago and I see this vette pulling out of a nice gated community and notice its a Z.....at this point I'm like sweeeeet. There is a traffic light about another mile up the road but it is always full of cars and I somehow always manage to get a green. I am praying for a red with no cars, so as I approach its still green...$hit, come on. The Z is catching up to me since I slowed down to like 30 and BAM...light turns red and he pulls up next to me. This is the point I finally start getting butterflies from the excitement....I throw it in neutral and rev just to make sure he knows this big red juicebox next to him is calling him out. He flashes his lights and I take that as him saying "its on". So we sit there and I hear him holding the rpm up a tad...maybe 1500rpm and I just sit there idling with my left foot on the brake and right hovering over the gas pedal. Light turns green and I freakin put my foot through the floor and the tires chirp a bit and I'm off like a rocket. By the time I shifted into second it looked like he was still sitting in the same place...I held it WOT into 3rd and let off and he was 2 bus lengths behind me. I was like wtf he didnt even try or else he was completely sleeping. There wasnt many cars on the road with us by this time and I slowed down to about 30 again and he would not come up next to me...finally he sped up a little and got closer and we hit another light but with lots of cars. He sat right off to the rear corner of me I guess checking out the rig and trying to figure out what it was. Light turns green and we all start going and most of the cars clear out in front of us. My turn is coming up in a few more block so I slow down again and he finally comes up next to me at about 45 and I figure he wants to roll race where he is in his element. He is next to me for no longer than 10 seconds while I am contemplating flipping the switch for the juice and running him from a roll when out of nowhere he just nails it and takes off.....I'm like wtf buddy??? ever heard of 3 honks or flash your lights...guess not. I was at my turn and decided he wasnt a good candidate for wasting my juice. It was cool though. I'm sure he'll be on the vette forum later telling them how he had a jeep try to race him and it took off like a rocket.

Bang Bang 04-07-2008, 09:30 PM Sounds like fun, did you hit the juice from a dig?
shodanusmc 04-07-2008, 09:32 PM 13.18 @ 102.22
Is that your best run with all the mods? If so, that Z06 driver was either having a massive heart attack, or he started in 4th gear.
na, he is probably on his site forgeting about the light to light deal going straight to the rolling start. vette guys (i used to be one) have a short memory for losses but, sound like a good first run!

Forgot to mention it was a C6 Z06. The 13.18 run was bone stock. No nitrous times yet.
SilveRT8 04-07-2008, 10:07 PM Good show Blown!
You just ran the street race of my dreams, it was fun reading about it.
Traction fron a dead stop is our best friend, last summer I raced against a C6 Z06 at the track and jumped 2 car lenghts ahead at the start and held on till the 1/8 marker where he flew by me like a rocket.

McBruno 04-08-2008, 04:41 AM I have a C6 Z and a SRT8 jeep and the guy was either not trying or sleeping like you said. The Jeep will surely get a Z off the line but by 60 mph the Z will be by the jeep like its in reverse. If you ever drive a new Z you will see how hard they pull once they get traction. The Z if driven by a good driver will go high 10s stock. That being said the jeep is probably the suv equivalent of the Z, I love em both.
Mango 04-08-2008, 06:15 AM LOL!
Yeah, off the line, if the guy is a sh*t driver, the rig will take him by *maybe* a car length, at which point the Z will soar past. Trust me, my dad and I have ran at our "test strip" and it's not even a contest. The Z will go to 72mph in first gear alone, no need to even shift, just keep it in the rev band and hold on for dear life.
Many stock Z's on stock tires are well documented and video'd as doing 10.98's in the 1/4. That's on stock Goodyear run flats.
Blown-WK 04-08-2008, 07:08 AM I realize the guy was sleeping or just didnt even try. My dad had a C6 Z06 and I know firsthand how fast they are. That doesnt mean every Z owner can drive them to their potential which means 90% of us could take a Z racing in the city since you can hardly go 60+. I had a similar experience with an SL65 and this guy actually knew what he was doin. I had a car on him to 60 then we shut at 70 and he was right next to me and pulling hard.
a-kon 04-08-2008, 07:24 AM The Jeep will always look better than the Z! :D
ajharman 04-08-2008, 08:09 AM Two months ago I got my Jeep right after my brother bought a c6 (non zo6). ever since we have been comparing rides and emailing pictures to eachother and hopefully we can match them up sometime. We live across the country from eachother so racing them is not happening but I went down to florida spring break and took a ride in his wipe. I was pretty impressed in the first gear of his vette because he gets to around 60 pretty quick and after that i was just glued to my seat. Nice ride but I would still take the jeep.
2BADGN 04-08-2008, 08:31 AM Good story.
navyavi469 04-08-2008, 09:09 AM Nice one Chris, you didn't specify weather it was a C5 or C6 though... maybe I missed it.
Next time you get into a rumble with a Z give my cell a call, i might be in the area. :satan:
Mango 04-08-2008, 09:17 AM I wish one of you guys lived close to me, I'd bring the Z06 out to rumble with anyone and get it on video. Win or lose it would be so much fun!! :) :)

Yes you did miss it farther down. It was a C6 Z.
vicioussrt 04-08-2008, 09:56 AM I have a good friend with a highly modded C5 Z06, which now after a hundred runs down the 1/4 can pull low 10s on drag radials.
I still remember his first visit to the track. First run he forgot to turn off traction control which bogged it on launch and cut spark at every shift. He was expecting high 11s low 12s and first run he got spanked by a SRT 4 on the way to an embarassing 13.0.
2nd run he just roasted the tires to a slightly better 12.8.
Point is, as someone mentioned, the vast majority of people you will run into at a stoplight have little or no experience running their cars in anger, especially from a dig. And a rig like the Jeep, is about as easy a 12 sec timeslip as you can get, and deadly on the street for that reason.
I'm sure no one here would doubt that a somewhat decently driven C6 Z06 would just destroy a GC SRT-8. But out on the streets a lot can happen, and in my experience, usually does.
navyavi469 04-08-2008, 10:19 AM ^ +1
Most of the E/T's you hear about on the strip are with big drag slicks or radials which they dont run day-to-day. Plus most people with juice dont have the time at a stoplight to turn it on and purge it. The Jeep is nice becuaes what it runs on the strip is what it runs from a stoplight in front of Circle-K.
SRT8demon420 04-08-2008, 11:40 AM dont mess wit da BEAST!!!! haha.... nice!

Many is a gross overstatement.
echo412 04-08-2008, 01:03 PM hehehhe ... nice Chris ... he was probably like WTF was that?!?!?

I'll race you, you bring your Dad's Z06, I'll bring MY Z06 and MY SRT8 :D
My SRT8 can take quite a few cars from a dig, but once you get tp speed they walk by me.
Mango 04-08-2008, 04:21 PM Many is a gross overstatement.
Right, so all the time slips and videos as proof are overstatements. :boohoo::boohoo:

Oh man you are so cool! It's YOUR Z06 and YOUR SRT8!! It MUST be faster huh?
I've never once tried to pass the car off as my own, so I fail to see why you had to specify that the vehicles were YOURS or what significance it has. I dream of one day being able to achieve the level where I can afford that kind of car.
So my Dad and I can share in our car culture addiction, what's the harm in that?
slither 04-08-2008, 05:57 PM The best part of this is that the GC (a 4600 lb SUV) does seem to get a lot of respect, even when comparing it with true sports cars. What other domestic truck gets props for being able to run with Z06's! (ok even if only for a few hundred feet or so) Gotta luv that.
SRTLUVR 04-08-2008, 06:54 PM Fun story! :) Thanks for sharing, too bad you didn't get to race him on the bottle!!! :(
Chase
Right, so all the time slips and videos as proof are overstatements. :boohoo::boohoo:
Uh, what? I didn't deny that some Z06s have hit the 10s with excellent drivers. Saying "many" do is a gross overstatement. Did I hurt your feelings? :boohoo::boohoo:
