: Compact Sub Install With Pics

The goal was to add a sub that is hidden and does not impact cargo area. I did not want a sub that will disturb the car next to me (or me), but will play the lowest frequencies in music when they are present.

I already have plenty of bass with the 4 new 6 ¾” mid/bass drivers in the doors that are advertised to play down to 55 hz. Here, are the previous threads:

New Rear Door Component Speakers With Pics (http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1175)

I chose the Kenwood KSC-SW1 powered sub which is rated at 150 watts and has controls for volume, crossover frequency, and phase. The install location is on the floor on the driver’s side in the back seat (I rarely use the back seats). I also put in a long coil of wire so I can move it to the cargo area if I have passengers and want to use it (see picture).

There is a fuse in the fuse block under the steering column that goes off and on with the stereo. I used an add a circuit for mini fuses to tap it.

Here are the pics:

Hello, all!

I am new to this forum (been lurking for a while, but I'm also a member on jeepforum and jeepsunlimited). Anyway, unfortunately I don't have an SRT8 but I do like my WK and am always looking for ways to blow my money on modding and upgrading it!!!

Anyway, I've recently upgraded to the Kicker speakers (doors and dash) and I'm happy with them, but now I want to add a little more bass. I don't want spend a lot of money or take up a lot of space, though, and this Kenwood KSC-SW1 looks like it might fill the bill. I know its not that big of a sub, but it has received a lot of good reviews, and I'm really only looking to fill-in the bottom-end a bit. Since I have a base Laredo, I don't have the factory amp (or the wiring I believe) so this device looks like a good idea, for me.

Here's my question(s)...How hard would the install be? It doesn't seem like it would be that hard. Also, since I don't want to lose any space in my Jeep, would this unit fit UNDER the passenger seat? It looks like it might, but I haven't really measured, yet. Lastly, how good is the sound in the WK? I'm not looking to rattle any windows, just fill in the low end a bit, and round out the sound.

Thanks!

I had that same exact sub in my '07 STI before I traded in for my '08 SRT8 Jeep. This sub is good if your just looking to fill some bass in the cabin. It's not going to win you any SPL contests or shake your windows\mirrors. If you turn it up a little you'll notice the subs distort and pop.

those work best if they are in the cargo area and the speaker is pointing back

Not always true. Sort of a misconception stemming from the success of CRX's in car stereo competitions. I have seen a lot of other firing options that have worked better, but they are very install dependent. Best is a funny term too as to me it would mean the smoothest frequency response, but my guess is to you it means the most output which are polar opposites.

Here is a little more info I PM'd last week. I have the four 6.75 inch CDT's in the doors so the purpose of the sub was truly for low end frequencies.

For the sub, I used the speaker inputs. I don't know why; because I went to the rear amp to tap the speaker outs. (You could tap at the speakers in the rear doors as well, it would probably be easier). It was quite a bit of work as I had to remove the rear seats, quarter panel trim (just move it to the side) and other interior trim around the hatch.

WKJeeps has a lot of helpful info. The colors on wiring diagrams are not always 100%, I noticed one error there and one error on the factory DVD manual.

As long as I was back by the amp; I figured the easiest way to get power was to tap the rear factory 12v outlet (which I would not likely use anyway). This was an alternative to running a line from the battery or one of the taps by the engine fuse box. Probably doing that might have been better and I discovered it would not have been too difficult either. The trim scuff plates by the doors are easy to remove and their is an easy good channel to run wires from front to back.

Under the scuff plates is where I ran the turn on lead. I only used the under dash tap for the turn on lead and hooked it to the radio fuse tap so the sub goes off and on with the radio. The mini fuse Add-A-Circuit (available at most part stores) was really perfect for this.

Sweet upgrade

I am looking to install subs and an amp in my jeep as well. Whats the easiest way to get the signal to the amplifier?
Also, Is it possible to power a ~360 watt RMS subwoofer amp off of the power outlet at the back using the lighter socket?, I checked the fuse rating under the hood and I belive its only a 30A fuse and I am pretty sure thats not enough. Can anyone elaborate?

Please reply, or PM me if you have any info.

BTW, great installs guys
