I went to SRT track experience in Fontana (SoCal) this past Sat. it was great. For anyone who has not gone, do not miss it. Saw lots of other SRTs (only 3 Jeeps). About 40 SRTs there todrive. Lots of fun.

(sigh) I had to cancel for the 13th. Have to fly to Houston for work instead.

This sux. :(

AutoMag
11-10-2006, 10:36 PM
And what sux even MORE is that I find out today...after 5 PM, of course...that the Houston people have to cancel. So there is no way to see if my SRT spot is still open (although I doubt it would be).

Well damn. I guess there's always next year...

AutoMag
11-10-2006, 10:39 PM
...or wait a cotton-pickin' minute! I checked the site and Monday is full, but Tuesday and Wednesday still have spots open!!

YESSSSSSSS!!!!! :) :) :)

jlandbl

Yeah, we are all gonna show up with dirty rides. It s*cks. Registration is 8-8:30am. I'm aiming to be there at 8, driving up from NJ in the morning. I'll be there regardless of the weather, especially since my buddy had to pay (he's a wrx man).

Here are my comments about the SRT Track Experience on 11/13/06 at Lime Rock, in the order I participated:

Short Track:
Cars – Viper SRT10, Crossfire SRT6 (Auto)
Conditions - slightly damp from overnight rain
Comments - The Crossfire excelled on the short track. It handled like a go cart, was nimble, accelerated well and the perfect car for this track. The Viper was difficult to handle on this track. The instructor asked you to shift into 2nd and drive the track in 2nd only. One of the first drivers actually spun a Viper around right in front of the spectator tent. This caused many to really take it easy. The Viper was too much car for this track. Also, since you couldn’t romp on it because you ran out of track, the Vipers actually sounded quieter than expected. A Neon SRT4 would have been great on this track but they were not made available at the event.
Instructors - The instructors rode with you and were blunt but very helpful. They know their stuff. I shouldn’t admit this, but one of them actually had to grab the steering wheel while I was driving the Crossfire a little too hard into a turn. The other instructor told me that I don’t know how to brake very well while I was driving the Viper. Thought you guys would find this funny.

Drag Strip / Slalom:
Cars – GC SRT8, 300 SRT8
Conditions – slightly damp, some puddles
Comments – The 300 was not able to get traction off the line due to damp conditions. It did much better than I thought it would on the slalom. The GC tore up the drag strip. Those who didn’t already own a GC SRT8 were getting out of it saying things like “I can’t believe that Jeep”, “ that thing kicks a*s”, “WOW”. There were a few who drove the GC too hard on the slalom and hit every cone. Both cars stopped very well. My buddy and I drove them both HARD, well past the end of the drag strip time indicator and nailed the brake. I’m not sure how long the strip was, but we hit a 4.29 in the GC and a 5.11 in the 300. We hit 55 by the time we hit the time indicator and almost 65 before we put the brake to the floor. The downside was there were between 3-4 people in each car. 1 GC had the Mopar CAI and we pulled the best times in this one compared to the other GC’s. It really made a difference. I was surprised.
Instructors – They let us do what we wanted except power brake off the line. They were not in the car with us and there was no training.

Race Track:
Cars – 300 SRT8, Charger SRT8, Crossfire SRT6
Conditions – mostly dry
Comments – This was one of the best parts of the day. You get to drive each car by yourself following one of the instructors in a lead car for 5 laps. 3 follow each instructor. The lead cars were Magnum SRT8s (we didn’t get to drive these at all during the event). The better you keep up, the faster the instructor will go. While my buddy and I were in the Crossfires, we actually lapped another group during the straight away. Our instructor radioed ahead to have the other group move over to the right. It was awesome. The stability control in these cars is unbelievable. We drove the cars on the edge at all times and the computer keeps you out of trouble. Again, the Crossfires were go karts, the brakes were a little mushy though, stability control didn’t kick in very often, and the engines are quiet. The Chargers handled extremely well but could not be pushed as hard without stability control kicking in. The 300’s very the weakest handler of the bunch (as expected due to the size), stability control was working overtime. The fastest I hit in these cars on the straight away was 115, which was during a passing drill. Also, instead of waiting around for your turn in the spectator tent, you could ride with the instructors in the Magnums. I did this every time. During these rides, the instructors provided some great driving tips.

Thrill Rides:
Cars – All, except SRT10 pickup (they didn’t let us drive or ride in these at all due to the damp conditions)
Conditions – dry to start then a light drizzle
Comments – This was the unbelievable. You were able to choose one car for 2 laps. I chose a Viper. 3 Vipers were pulling out of the put at the same time run after run. The instructor I was with really could drive. We were in 2nd and 3rd most of the lap and 4th on the straight. We hit high 140s on the straight. The Viper is raw, powerful and loud (the opposite of how the exhaust sounded on the short track). The Viper is truly a track car. All 3 Vipers passed a GC and Crossfire at one point. It was the most incredible ride I ever had in a car.

Other Comments:
1 Charger, 1 GC and one Magnum had the Mopar/Corsa exhaust and Mopar CAI. The exhaust note was awesome. It was throaty with some back lash during shifts. These cars were identified by a MOPAR sticker in the back window. The charger also had the Mopar lowering kit. It looked great but I didn’t get to ride/drive this one. The tires on a lot of the cars were bald. The day went too quick. I appreciate the SRT vehicles way more than before. The goody bag that you get at the end was junk. I have video from inside the car while riding with the instructor in the Magnum at the Race Track and video from inside the GC and 300 during the drag strip runs and slaloms but don’t know how to post for you. One of the participants had the Zoomers exhaust with Airraid CAI. The exhaust really snapped at you when he revved it. I liked the sound but didn’t like the look of the exhaust tips. My GC is bone stock so who am I to say. Most of the SRT cars had clear bras. Some were faded or discolored. One of the GC SRT8's had a bad brake squeel just like some of the forum members post about.

Great write up...One of if not the best I've seen. Thanks for taking the time.

Had the "experience" myself in Atlanta several months ago and enjoyed it.

i'm fortunate to have viper and the gc so everyday is a fun day driving...However the viper is like a second skin..it's the only car i've driven that u feel DIRECTLY connected to..for instance with a vette u are there for the ride...fun tho it may be...with the viper it's u and the car-no disconnect.

It's not till you really push the viper that you fully appreciate what it's all about and that's what makes its quirks worth putting up with. One of two things happen to the new owners who quickly dump the car. Either they baby the car and so don't get to experience the rush that makes it so worth having, or they jump all over it without the kind of driving experience necessary to handle a car like this and scare the crap out of themselves.

the srt track experience is a great way to appreciate all the srt vehicles

I have to second Jl's comments on the instructors being blunt, he probably had the same guy in the viper as I did, screaming at me that I didn't know how to brake and being as jl said, very blunt throughout. . . I showed him though, gave the viper full throttle as I came off a hard left turn up a short hill and spun her right off the track, it was quite amusing seeing him hit the kill switch and pray that we not hit the fence. . . what a great day, sorry I missed the hot laps, but overall totally worth it. . . too bad we didn't get to take a GC onto the track though!

Dr steve, 2 guys in my group did the same thing on that hill in the viper. My instructor was a young guy, really cool. When i was in the crossfire he was giving me perfect instuctions. I kept catching up to the guy in front of me. Had to stop twice. When i was done he told me to make sure I jump in with him for the viper. So I did. Had to stop twice cause i was catchin up again. The last lap, going up that corner hill, I stomped on it, smoking the tires all the way up the hill. He looked at me and I said "sorry bro. I had to." He laughed, and all the guys were clapping. It was cool. Def a great time. :D

so does this class provide any kind of certificate? I was wondering if it could qualify drivers for certain road courses?

they do give you a certificate, but it doesn't qualify you for anything
