well, the paint I noticed peeling near one of the fog lights has progressed to almost all the way across the the bumper along that line. As much as I hate reapainting on a 4 month old car do you guys think I should. How have you guys in a similar situation handled this issue. thanks

I had the same issue as you. I took it to the dealer and they had it repainted for free and now it is hard as a rock.

These were some early pictures. I only had it a month before the paint started going away.

i never thought about painting the black until I saw the 07 bumpers.

I have the exact same problem. Started about 1 month after buying. I took it to the dealer who touched it up (with regular touch up paint) and clear coat. I told them I'd let them try the touch up and if it doesn't look right or hold up, then I wanted it re-painted. So far it has held up and looks ok. I think they caught it before it got bad. I'm watching this close. Right now, you have to get on your hands and knees to even notice it's been touched up. The "touch-up by delaer" is noted on my record (and my receipt). This way if it doesn't hold up, I can take it to another dealer to paint (my dealer is small, no body shop) and they won't be able to blame the peal on a home touch-up job. I still can't decide if I should pursue re-painting.

My silver '06 GC SRT8 had the paint peeling on the front bumper below the fog lights within the first 60 miles! I was in the process of moving to Virginia so I had to wait a couple of weeks to get it to a dealer out here. The dealer examined the bumper paint and decided to replace the whole front bumper, rather than risk repainting the original. I had to wait 6 weeks for the replacement to come in because it was on "back order". It's now painted and back on the GC, and looks great! The body shop did a good job, and you can't tell the repaint from the factory paint job.

Based upon some of the comments about bad factory paint, it may not be too hard to beat the factory finish. ;)

like i said before the 07 bumpers would fix this problem because there is no edge right there and the whole thing is painted.. big improvements..

Could this be a color specific problem from the factory? I noticed a couple of you have silver, I didn't see any mention of other colors. I have the inferno red, and never have had any peeling like that at all. If this is color specific, it might be easier to prove that Chrysler simply screwed up and probably never added any flex to the silver colored bumpers.

Do you or anyone know where we can get some 07' Bumpers for the Front and the Back?.. Painted to Match.. I'd hate to have to get them painted somewhere, and then to try to match the Bright Silver I have. It's going to be a tough situation anyway you look at it. Now I'm wishing I waited a little longer for my SRT8. I think DCX skimped out on us 06' guys. They wanted to get the SRT8's out without finishing them properly. I mean it's not the end of the world, but it would be nice to have, ya know.

well I took it in today for the first oil change (1700 miles)

and pointed it out to the service advisor. He said he ll show it to his managers in terms of what to do. Being that I bought the car there I ll try to make a point about how the 2007 bumpers dont have this issue and how i know many in the same boat.

Also, I paid 400 bucks for a 3m clear bra on the front of the car.
Shouldn't they be liable since their faulty product would necessitate removal of the clear bra.

yea they should have to re apply the clear bra for you when they fix the problem.. they won't want to put the 07 bumpers on but if you reason with them and tell them it will solve the problem it may work.. the problem is just that edge and it won't happen on the 07's

well, back from the dealer...

Damn, this is tough.

First they wanted to charge me 100 bucks for the oil change. Then I told them that they said it was covered. Then the manager busts out a new brochure that states SRT vehicles not included. That being said I threw a
sh!t fit and got them to at least give me this one for free. Good thing I waited till they had done it tp speak up. On further forcing the issue they gave me the name of the dealer owner and told me to take it up with him.

And then there is the paint issue.

DC has a policy that when paint quality is an issue they need pictured sent to them before approving the job. So they took pics and sent them in and will know tomorrow. I dropped the '07 bumper idea. They were not too thrilled. And when I asked about reimbursing the clear bra they told me that its aftermarket and hence not covered. So there it is, straight from the jack@sses mouth. But the drive home was more than worth it. Please refer to my other post for that one

I just noticed my inferno red starting to peel under my 3M clear bra at the same spot. I'm hoping the dealer doesn't try to blame the clear bra...because then I'll have to freak!

I took mine to the dealer a week ago. They took pics to send to DCX, no word yet. They will be painting the entire front bumper, as the clear is very thin & was also scratched & touched up on the lot. The rear bumper seems fine now, but I'm sure it will peel eventually.

mine got approved for a repaint ( why wouldnt it?). I just havent got around to taking it in to get it done. I ll do it in the next few weeks when I have to commute 100 miles a day, which is better done in their loaner:)

I've had my black 06 for 10 months and the front bumper is perfect but the REAR bumper is peeling on one side, right where the bumper starts at a sharp angle in the wheel well. For a few months it was just a tiny pea sized chip but last week I was just trying out my new Karcher and it made the chip a lot worse. :(

Right now I'm in Paris and this morning I noticed an SRT8 in the window of the Jeep showroom near the Arc de Triumph, but it looked odd so I went in and noticed that the wheels aren't polished they are painted silver, and the black is brilliant metallic black like the regular Grand Cherokee. It was a 2006 and had the padded dashboard and doors, functional rear foglights, and adjustable headlights. And the sticker price was only $85,000!

call me crazy but I did nt know our black was different the regular GC black

idealrides

Yep, our black is non-metallic.

By the way, to activate the rear fog lights you turn the headlight switch one position beyond "automatic" as there is an additional position on the switch. Maybe if someone swapped over to this stalk then the foglights could be easily activated, without rewiring. Also the rear fogs have their own indicator light on the instrument cluster just above and to the right of the front foglight indicator. I can only imagine we have this light as well.
