Hi Guys,

I live in BC and am seriously thinking about importing an SRT8 from the US (loaded, pretty much new 07s in the 35k range). I have spoken to a couple of Chrysler dealerships here that will sell 3rd party ext warrantly on them, pricey, but I'd probably do it just to be safe.

A couple questions:
1. Do you have to pay the $4k gas guzzler tax even if the vehicle isn't new?
2. MPG: I know this vehicle is incredibly hard on gas, and MPG will not deter me--I MUST have this vehicle!!!, but I'm curious to compare to other vehicles I have had. So,how much does it cost you to fill up, then how many KMs per tank do you get (I do mainly short trips in the city, unfortunately!).

Thanks for your help.

$75 bucks for 91oct @ $1.20/L will get me almost 400km mixed city highway driving. However I put on 600km a week so it ends up being around $400-450 a month in gas. Your gas prices are probably higher on the coast. I average out at 17.2L/100km or about 13mpg. I have a heavy foot too. ;)

No sure on the gas guzzler tax.

In the US we don't have a gas guzzler tax on the Jeep as it is a SUV, not a car.

Thanks. I'm only getting 13 mpg in all city driving with my currently daily driver, which is an RX8 I'd gladly spend a bit more on gas in return for massive HP and torque :)
Hmm. If there's no Gas tax in the US I'm guessing I'll have to pay it then, as it would be the first time for the vehicle :(

there shouldn't be a gas guzzler on a used one.

I just found out that if you import a vehicle that was "put in service" before Mar. 20/07 then you don't have to pay the 4k at the border (Mar 20/07 was the date that the "Green Levy" took effect; another example of the Cdn govt creating new taxes to suck us dry).
*"Apparently In Service" means plated, or the date on which the automobile's warranty has been put in place, or the date the automobile is appropriated by a dealer for their own use.

I figured it was something like that. I was lucky when I got mine they had employee pricing still and that basically negated the 4K tax. I hear now they are thinking about doing away with the tax. :(

Does that mean we get a refund eventually, or does it mean that the dealership absorbs the refund and argues that it was in the deal you got?...

Is there an article on this tax being axed?

The govt gets the money, so I doubt there would be a refund. I'd be shocked if they axed the tax with the emphasis on 'Green' in politics these days.

You are correct on the tax. Gas Mileage-who cares. Good Luck with your purchase, you will find a nice one on this site.

My understanding is that the green levy is payable by Chrysler Canada to the feds, while the eco auto rebate is refundable to the individual who purchased the car from the dealer. I think the last budget dropped the eco auto rebate, but is wasn't clear if they were also going to axe the tax. Doubt it.
