: Exhaust Noise After Driving

After a long drive in my 2006 GC SRT8 (4800 miles on odo), after everything is heated up and usually after shutdown, I have a noise which seems to be coming from the rear part of the exhaust. It's a ringing noise almost like a bell. The noise occurs once every 5-10 seconds for about 1-3 minutes after shutdown and the volume of it seems to fade as the exhaust cools. During driving, there is no audible noise and the exhaust sounds normal. However, I did hear this noise once while idling at a stop light.
Has anyone seen (or heard) this? At first I thought it might be a heat shield but that should be more like a rattle then a ringing and should be heard/felt during acceleration. I tried to search to see if this was covered in an earlier thread but couldn't find anything. Sorry if this has come up before.

My exhaust makes noises as it cools down after driving it, I also think the water that runs off of the a/c compressor drips onto the exhaust and makes the hissing noise I hear. It doesn't affect my driveability, so I don't care!

Yeah, I have the hissing too and am not worried about that either. This ringing noise seems to be a separate issue. Thanks.

It's water drops falling on the exhaust up near the front. The sound just travels to the back! Lay on the ground and you can see it, up near the passenger side front tire.

I have the exact same issue after almost every trip. It sounds like the cling clang of a buoy on the bay or something. Same frequency and duration as yours: the noise is about every 5 seconds for a few minutes after I shut it off. I talked to the dealer about it and they said it was normal and they couldn't do anything about it.

Your description is so much better than mine. That is exactly what it sounds like. So annoying.

Im thinking it might be the metal cooling off from the exhaust, theres nothing else it could really be.I had a 92' Lexus that made alot of clincking sounds from the exhaust while driving and when it was shut off the sound amplified until it was cool.Is the factory exhaust stainless or aluminized.Stainless would probably make the most noise when cooling.

I had the same noise until I got rear-ended. It went away with the new exhaust installation.

I kinda miss it...

anyone have an idea as to what is the "winding down" noise after car shutoff ?
